    Genres: History, American
    Publisher's Summary:
This is the story of countless acts of sacrifice for the cause of American freedom; the story of the fishing town that took on the Crown.
Though the outcome of the American Revolution is the high point in the history of the New World, the victory of the embattled colonists was a tenuous one, shaped by heroism, suffering and an abiding thirst for liberty deeper than the harbors that played host to so many battles. But what if His Majesty's Navy could have confined the nettlesome Yankee privateers, manned by furious fishermen, to their wharves and kept the vital sea lanes from England open? Would the British have maintained its hold on Boston as a strategic base, put down George Washington's nascent army, and secured the New England colonies? Might King George's men have nipped our rebellion in the bud?
Gloucester historian Joseph Garland (himself a descendent of the Gloucester rebels) chronicles the fight for liberty and control of the New England seaboard during the Revolution, highlighting the special and hitherto unrecognized role of Gloucester, the oldest fishing settlement of the colonies and destined to be among the world's busiest. The port's secure position behind the inner reaches of Cape Ann Harbor gave its citizens, sailors, fishermen and militia a strategic advantage that led to that first American victory of the war; a victory that forced the King's men to abandon their attempt to impose their naval and supply base-and their will-on New England.

I love all Joe Garland's books. This one is exceptionally good. Historic and exciting. Highly recommended. Buy it before it goes completely out of print and the price goes through the roof.

    Title: Full Circle
Subtitle: The End of the Beginning

    Narrator: Shane Morris
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 11 hrs and 26 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-28-14
    Publisher: Silverbear Publishing
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: History, American
    Publisher's Summary:
Full Circle is a devastating introspective into Native American culture and ceremony, spirituality, humanity, and society at large. Told from the perspective of Jackson, a white/Native American mixed blood, Full Circle questions the status quo of American society while revealing the causes and effects of colonialism and manifest destiny.
Full Circle's drama is both intense and realistic as Jackson's journey leads the reader to places and to people most Americans don't know exist. Spisak shines a light on taboo subjects from the historical policy of genocide by the US government to the exploitation of spirituality by greedy and often deluded people.

    Just saying...
I just finished this book and I'm having difficulty putting how it has affected me into words. The story itself is told through the eyes of Jackson, a mixed blood native who was given up by his mother at birth and tells his life journey that would eventually lead him to extremely gruesome killing fields. The story begins at a Sundance ran by a self-appointed medicine man who is jealous of Jackson's visions. It is during this fourth year to the Tree that Jackson finds the answer as to what happened to his mom so long ago, and at the same time he is accused of failing to complete his final Sundance. Through the telling of the story you learned of abuse, rejection by one's own people for reasons that may or may not be valid, of the tricks and games the true bloods play on whites, mixed and non-res pure who are seeking the truth, betrayal, the corruption of ceremony, and lies through jealousy. The author presents a thought provoking story which I know is laced with truth, as I am of mixed blood and know some of these self-appointed types and the trickery he speaks of. However, it will be the reader's own experience that determines whether Jackson will be considered a criminal or a hero by the end of the book, and can see the possibility of controversy occurring over the book's content. All in all, it proved to be a good read. I would definitely purchase another book written by this author.
    Is this world hell?
I took Full Circle to be at it's core an effort to explore the question "has the world already ended and is this hell?" Spisak reveals a world many may know only from "Dances with Wolves" or Indian casinos for the twisted reality that it really is, and paints a grim outlook for how to address such a state of affairs. He writes with passion, candor, and honest perspective.
I give the book 4 stars because I know this author's best work has yet to be written.
Fair warning--this will thoroughly bum you out
I got this book because it was free and it happened to be the anniversary of Wounded Knee. I figured it was a good way to learn the history they never teach us in school--which it was--but it was also muddied by the fiction and hard to tell where one starts and the other takes over.
And man, it's more depressing than I figured--not just the history, but the novel. As bummed as I am about our government and history in general, any notion that at least somewhere out there, some secret repository of ancient wisdom was being safeguarded and would some day be used to undo generations of crap has been dispelled. Thanks to greed, dishonesty, propagandists, and revisionists, we're all broken.
