Title: Tales Never Told Around the Campfire
Subtitle: True Stories of Frontier America
    Author: Mark Dugan
    Narrator: Roy Lunel
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 4 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-30-15
    Publisher: University Press Audiobooks
Ratings: 2.5 of 5 out of 6 votes
    Genres: History, American
    Publisher's Summary:
Ten outlaws, ten states, ten stories of 19th-century fugitives remarkable because the events really took place. Mark Dugan's latest outlaw chase reins in enough evidence to corral the cynics. There is new information on the strange relationship between Wild Bill Hickok, his enemy and victim, David McCanles, and the beautiful Sarah Shull of North Carolina. Was Tom Horn a hired killer for the big cattlemen in the unsolved Wyoming ambush? How much do we really know about Deputy U.S. Marshall Ed Short, legendary for his gun duel with Black-Faced Charley Bryant of the Dalton Gang in Oklahoma? Or Cora Hubbard, who led a bank robbery in Missouri, then went home to Kansas to change back into a dress and bury the stolen money in her potato patch? What became of Punch Collins, black leader of a New Mexico train hold up in 1884?

    The Wild Frontier
This was a fun audiobook filled with many lesser known, yet just as interesting and colorful characters from America's wild frontier. Many of whom worked the cattle drives and gambling circuits just as the famous outlaws did. Several were hard, dangerous people living in hard times when all that stopped them was frontier justice.
I think the most chilling story was about the Hill family where Alan Cash Hill and Dusky settled in Parker County Texas. They were a true family of outlaws, even having an escape tunnel under their homestead for other outlaws to stay and evade the law. Then there was Sarah Shull and David McCanles who was the first man killed by Wild Bill Hickok.
There was U.S. Marshal Ed Short from Oklahoma who was said to have feared neither man nor the devil who was in a famous gunfight with Black-Faced Charley Bryant from the Dalton Gang. Also, Punch Collins from Escondida, New Mexico and Pete Loggins from Arkansas who was a man of many trades and a murderer. From Illinois there was William Ruby and his Copperhead justice along with so many other characters with colorful histories.
There were a few chapters I listened to twice because I recognized the areas and I found it quite interesting listening to the history of the people and places that settled or passed through them. I would definitely recommend listening to this audiobook and I would even listen to it again while sitting around a campfire. It would remind me that the land I'm sitting on was most likely occupied by at least one or more of these folks from the old west. This was a great book by Mark Dugan.
Roy Lunel did a perfect job narrating this audiobook. He spoke clearly and told the stories as one would expect to hear them. I think he has a great voice for doing westerns. He made this book completely enjoyable and I hope to hear more from him in the future.
Audiobook gifted in exchange for review.
There is a reason the tales were never told
This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Some one who likes listening to court dockets and boring facts about nothing. The facts were hard to follow.
What do you think your next listen will be?
    Not sure
What three words best describe Roy Lunels voice?
    Easy to listen to
What character would you cut from Tales Never Told Around the Campfire?
All of them - well I can't say that because I stopped listening about half way through.
    Any additional comments?
There is reason you never heard about any of these people. They weren't noteworthy.

Looking forward to learning more about the first four states in the alphabet.
The "Look Inside" has me believing I am going to love this book, as there is a color photo of Alabama's state, then an overview that includes things like the state song, following some interesting facts about Alabama. If my thoughts regarding this tome change, I will return and update this review.

    Mary's Story-Good Book
This is a good book and enjoyed reading it very much. Lots of history of our family. It brought back memories of my childhood. My Aunt Mary was a very special person. Very talented and could make something out of almost nothing. She had an energy that would put most people to shame. This book is a good read, shows how our parents lived and made do in the hard times. Every younger generation should read this book. Lots of hard work went into this book. Many hours, days and weeks of research to make sure that all the facts were correct. I recommend this book to all ages. I would rate this book a five.

What a fantastic good old fashioned adventrue
I just love this series of stories. After obtaining this title on spec, I have subsequently gone back to the start and purchased the lot. Fast, full of action, well narrated and magical. Just like a 'Commando' picture story book but updated by HBO. Our hero is square jawed, honest and a fighting man. His motley platoon, a collection of misfits and characters that are all redeemed by courage and loyalty. It's the Victor comic for grown up boys, and I say again, a great story, well written and so accurate. It will keep you captivated, waiting to see how Sgt Tanner solves the next problem the German Army puts in front of him. I cannot recommend it highly enough. Well done.
    Great book
Well read and great story, I would definitely recommend this book. It's the 4th book in the series and this story really shows how good the research is.
    Forge Ahead
Once again a rattling good yarn delivered with pace and excitement complex who did IT and reverie in comradeship that seems to be missing today well done James another 5star read
Great stuff as always by James Holland!

    Members Reviews:
    Very Disappointed
I was hoping this book would be about the American Revolution and the part women played in it. While there actually was a Dr. Warren, later General Warren who died at the Battle of Bunker Hill, the character in the book does not portray him accurately. Dr. Joseph Warren never joined with Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Men as the book suggests. The book is more about the fictitious daughter, Abigail and the conflict between her and mother. Then Abigail's "flight to fight as a man" in the Revolution where she meets a deserting British soldier. The usual - fall in love, wounded in battle, and both are saved and healed of their wounds. Very little about the Revolution and where this battlefield actually was. I really enjoy historical and historical romantic books, unfortunately, this was neither. I am glad I read this so I will know not to look for the other books of the series. Sorry for such a low rating, but this was a very disappointing read.
    Now, I've heard everything
Usually, when I read a wildly inaccurate historical novel, I assume that the author just didn't understand the importance of research. He or she didn't understand that having 21st century people in costumes did not a historical novel make, so to speak. And that's the sort of review I'd have posted here, until I read Mr. Burns' afterward. But let's let Mr. Burns speak for himself. 'This book is many things, but one thing it is not is a history lesson. Reading this book should be entertaining, and while history is very entertaining, it is not the intent of this novel to follow a series of historical events.' Hmm. If history is entertaining, why does it need to be adapted so that it 'does not become arduous to read'? Perhaps because the author is unwilling to take the time? The author goes on to proclaim that he used 'real' people as models for his characters...that is, he took their names, and changed the details of their lives enough that the poor souls wouldn't be able to recognize themselves.

He is, to date, the only president from Pennsylvania and the only president to remain a lifelong bachelor. His inability to identify a ground for peace or address the sharply divided pro-slavery and anti-slavery partisans with a unifying principle on the brink of the Civil War has led to his consistent ranking by historians as one of the worst presidents in American history. Historians in both 2006 and 2009 voted his failure to deal with secession the worst presidential mistake ever made.

    Title: Religion And Wine
Subtitle: A Cultural History of Wine Drinking in the United States
    Author: Robert C. Fuller
    Narrator: Tim Lundeen
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 32 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-19-14
    Publisher: University Press Audiobooks
    Genres: History, American
    Publisher's Summary:
Wine, more than any other food or beverage, is intimately associated with religious experience and celebratory rituals. Nowhere is this seen more clearly than in American cultural history. From the Pilgrims at Plymouth Rock to the Franciscans and Jesuits who pioneered California's Mission Trail, many American religious groups have required wine to perform their sacraments and enliven their evening meals. This audiobook tells the story of how viniculture in America was started and sustained by a broad spectrum of religious denominations. In the process, it offers new insights into the special relationship between wine production and consumption and the spiritual dimension of human experience.
    Critic Reviews:
"Fuller has written that rare combination of scholarly treatise and entertaining social history... An intoxicating book; highly recommended." (Library Journal)
    Members Reviews:
Is Wine a culture or an adjunct to religion?
As a long term alcoholic, this reader has wrestled with whether he should take wine at his service. This small volumn provides the background for an intelligent individual answer to the question. It also gives insight to the question of cultural purity in the midst of others, and the rituals designed to preclude contamination by non-believers. It's subtitle, "A Cutural History of Wine Drinking in the United States." is its best recommendation. If one already has the answer, then this open non-polemical history is not for them. I particularly related to its description of wine tasting as a religous-secular ceremony. The recent decision to prohibit sales of wine via the Internet makes sense after "tasting" this easy read volume. A strong recommendation for religous anthropologists, recovering alcoholics, and the just plain curious. The only omission that I noted was no discussion of the use of non-preserved grape juice "mus" for ministers, rabbis, and priests who are alcoholics.
