Publisher's Summary:
Of all the dramatic events that transpired during the Civil War, the end of the war in April 1865 brought perhaps the most remarkable of them all, and they came in such quick succession that it's still hard to believe nearly 150 years later.
On April 2, the long siege of Petersburg by Ulysses S. Grant ended with Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia finally having its line broken, forcing Lee to retreat and give up Richmond in the process. Lee's battered army began stumbling toward a rail depot in the hopes of avoiding being surrounded by Union forces and picking up much-needed food rations. While Grant's army continued to chase Lee's retreating army westward, the Confederate government sought to escape across the Deep South. On April 4 President Lincoln entered Richmond and toured the home of Confederate President Jefferson Davis.
Members Reviews:
A Good Introduction to the End-Game of America's Civil War.
Length: 44 pages.
This is another fine, quick, no-nonsense booklet by Charles Rivers Editors that is intended to give a sense of history without overwhelming the reader with so much information and exhaustive detail.
To that end, it accomplishes its goal.
For the young student, or for those not interested enough in the Civil War to spend more than two or three hours to understand the mindsets of the two principal generals, this is a useful introduction to Generals Grant and Lee.
As for myself, as a product of the Baby Boom, ie, a youngster during the Centennial of the War Between the States, I crave more detail than is possible in so short a discussion.
The one aspect that is hard to pull off in these short volumes is that heartfelt emotion of Lee and his bedraggled, disheartened comrades, soldiers and cavalry. This booklet comes close, though, when it quotes Grant regarding his respect for his adversaries, whom he felt, fought so valiantly for their cause, although he felt their cause was among the worst causes ever to have been embraced by any people in any war.
So, yes, I recommend The Greatest Civil War Battles: The Appomattox Campaign as a launching pad towards researching the Civil War. But I also advise readers to obtain the series by Sheby Foote, either in hardback or in audiobook format.

Very good book to read to follow this part of the Civil War. This is so interesting to me because it was fought in our country - by our people. I am sure some connection can be found in most families to soldiers or others who were involved in the war. There are many books to be read the battles and to understand how everything was done you will need to read more than this one - but a good place to start. There were so many lives lost in this war and the devastation to the people and lands was awful. We hope never to have a war as this again.
The Appomatox Campaign
A very good description of the last battles of the american civil war. General Lee was a great athough human general. His surrender was a sad event from the standpoint of view of warriors at war but at the same time it was a joyful event which propelled the US to become the great country it is nowadays.
VERY GOOD
The part of the Civil War where the north used its superiority in troops and supplies to bleed the south dry.
