    Title: The American Cowboy

    Publisher's Summary:
The cowboy, America's most popular folk hero, appeals to millions of readers of novels, histories, biographies, and folk tales. Cowboys command a vast audience on country radio, television, and at the movies, but what exactly is a cowboy?
Authors Joe B. Frantz and Julian Ernest Choate, Jr., reveal the real, dyed-in-the-wool cowboy as a heroic being from the American past, who richly deserves to be understood in terms of reality, instead of myth. Here, then, is the definitive portrait of the American cowboy - in frontier history and in literature - reexamined, revitalized, and set in the proper perspective.
Many exciting accounts of cowboy life have been presented by such talented writers as J. Evetts Haley, J. Frank Dobie, Wayne Gard, Walter Prescott Webb, Edward Everett Dale, Helena Huntington Smith, Ramon F. Adams, and C. L. Sonnichsen. But Frantz and Choate see the cowboy in relation to the entire panorama of western history and as part of a continuing tradition: "The American cowboy has carved a niche - niche nothing, it's a gorge - in American affection as a folk hero, and in this role we have surveyed him."
    Critic Reviews:
"I couldn't find any place to lay it down, and I covered every chapter...It is my guess that The American Cowboy will take top place in its field. (Walter Prescott Webb)

    Five Stars
This was a great research piece
    A good read
Interesting book. I learned some history I was not aware of about the settlement of the west. I enjoyed this quick read and some myths I had grown up with concerning cowboys. What a rugged life.
    Home on the range.
Great book on the real everyday life of a cowboy from my history teacher at Corpus Christi State University in 1993.
    Who Really Rode that Range?
This is THE definitive book on the reality of that American icon, the cowboy. Basic research for this book was carried out by Dr. Choate in the development of his somewhat massive PhD dissertation. Joe B. Frantz (ignore the awkward authorship information above) essentially was Choate's editor, transforming Choate's academic product into an eminently readable and engrossing account of both the glorious myth and the gritty reality
of life on the range. Choate and Frantz shoot down (pun intended) the mythology of the quick-draw gun duel popularized by Hollywood and even more egregiously in the 1950s-60s era of television westerns. Their debunking of much of the lore created around such notable non-cowboys as Wild Bill Hickok and Wyatt Earp will gratify any who sincerely seek the real lowdown on these somewhat lowdown characters. An easy read, a great "beach book," hard to put down as the reader senses that at last he is getting the straight skinny on an all-too-often mythologized extinct American subspecies.

Sit down, start listening & become fascinated
Is there anything you would change about this book?
This was a gentle book. As if you and I sit down to talk to someone and then uncover a fascinating history from the person. We are invited into a life...not famous, not exceptional, not extraordinary--but full of sorrow and life and death and the realities of living in poverty, during a war etc.. I enjoyed the book--- I felt the language was stiff. Am not sure these folks would have talked so formally to each other as represented in the book. This felt very unnatural...for an otherwise sweet story.
What three words best describe Ray O'Conors voice?
    okay three times
Was She Called Him Raymond worth the listening time?
I always like sitting and listening to the ever fascinating histories of each and every person...and so I enjoyed this.

Title: Santa Cruz Island: A History of Conflict and Diversity
    Author: John Gherini
    Narrator: David Casler
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 28 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-31-16
    Publisher: University Press Audiobooks
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 2 votes
    Genres: History, American
    Publisher's Summary:
Rising from the waters of the Pacific off the Southern California coast, Santa Cruz Island captures the imagination. Once home to a large Chumash population, in the 19th century it became a self-sufficient island rancho. As with all islands of beauty and size, it attracted people from the coastline.
But as author John Gherini tells us in his prologue, "The attractions of the island, however, routinely led people into conflict, wrapping it in a shroud like its morning fog. The modern history of the island would witness the passion to own it, to protect it, to use it and to fight over it."
For the first time, a thorough history of Santa Cruz Island's tumultuous past is provided. In pre-Columbian times it was a source of wealth to the indigenous peoples - the place where they made their shell bead money. During the Spanish-Mexican period it was a smuggler's haven where fur hunters avoided customs officials.
As a land grant, it passed through the hands of Andres Castillero and William E. Barron and eventually was purchased by Justinian Caire. The island flourished under the direction of Caire and his family. It was a secluded paradise off the Santa Barbara Coast, with extensive sheep and cattle holdings as well as an esteemed winery.
Seeds of conflict were sown by Justinian Caire's will when the island was divided between family members. The Stantons, the Rossis, the Gherinis, the National Park Service, and The Nature Conservancy all were involved over time. The tortured legal and family disputes are recounted for the first time in this important new work.
Island ranching, hunting and recreation, and environmental challenges are described in detail. Recent historical events involving the establishment of the Channel Islands National Park are explored as well.
The book is published by University of Oklahoma Press.

A little Island with a tumultuous past
I went to Santa Cruz Island about 25 years ago with a group from the University of California Berkeley. I thought it was a great place and wished I could live there. It is just off the coast of Santa Barbara in the Channel Islands. When I saw this book I just had to read it.
Gherini covers the formation of the islands to the life of the Chumash people that lived on the islands for at least a thousand years. The author discusses the history, culture, wars and languages of the Chumash of Santa Cruz Island.
Gherini describes the period under the rule of Spain and Mexico when the Islands were a haven for smugglers and illegal hunters of the sea otter fur. When California became part of the United States, the Island was acquired by William E. Barron who later sold it to a Frenchman, Justinian Caire. The Caire family owned the island for many years until it was taken over by The Nature Conservancy and the National Parks Service. I found the legal battles by the Caire family reads like a legal novel. Three times they went all the way to the California Supreme Court, no wonder many of the descendants became attorneys.
The author is an attorney and a direct descendant of Justinian Caire. The book is well written and researched. Gherini had access to all the family papers and documents and has created the most complete history of the Island to date. The book contains photographs and maps and is a worthy addition to ones library.

Did you ever wonder what became of the principle characters after the conclusion of the Seabiscuit book and movie?
    Members Reviews:
And Now You Know.....The Rest Of The Story
William H. Nichols has special insight on the legendary champion, Seabiscuit; he worked at Ridgewood Ranch as a teenager in 1944, when 18 foals of The Biscuit's were born and - years later - as co-breeder of Sea Orbit, Seabiscuit's most successful descendent in racing.
It is through the professional eyes, historical research and interviews of Nichols that the story of Seabiscuit, his most famous nemesis - War Admiral - and a host of individuals, including Charles & Marcela Howard, Red Pollard and George Woolf, are chronicled after the cheering of fans and accolades from racing glory faded away like the color of aging press clippings.
A lot of turf is covered in the 182 pages, with special focus on the ongoing work by The Seabiscuit Heritage Foundation to renovate the Ridgewood Ranch property, while making it home to descendents of its most famous resident. Nichols also chronicles many artists who portrayed Seabiscuit and provides an update on author Laura Hillenbrand - who Nichols initially talked with when she was doing research for her monumental Seabiscuit: An American Legend.
The never-ending controvery surrounding Seabiscuit's 1940 Santa Anita Handicap victory over stablemate Kayak II is reviewed in the last chapter, with Nichols providing what may be the best summary on who ultimately should have won that day and why.
This is a must read for Thoroughbred racing fans or those who want a lasting understanding of the rest of the story in what certainly is a timeless slice of American History.
    wonderful
This book is one of the best I have ever read and a wonderful glimpse into the history of a great race horse and the people who were part of his life. It also contains historical facts about a country and its people during the great depression. Seabiscuit and his accomplishments were a diversion from the hoplessness and grief that pervaded those times. It also touches on how the depression affected the sport of horse racing.
Above all, it keeps the memories of this great champion and those who loved him alive. Seabiscuit was wonder, magic and hope. When reading this book I felt as though I was a part of all that.
I was very glad I read it & wouldn't have wanted to miss ...
This book wasn't quite what I'd expected it would be, but it is filled with interesting history. I was very glad I read it & wouldn't have wanted to miss the read.
AN INSIDE STORY WELL WORTH HAVING
Since seeing the movie with Tobey Maguire and Jeff Bridges I have started a private collection of Seabiscuit memorabilia.
I purchase only the "real" documented books. Of course, Laura Hillenbrand's book is the foundation to build from. This
"American Hero" will always hold that title. My photo collection comes from www.galleryof champions.com.
Seabiscuit, the Rest of the Story
I loved this book! I read the Seabiscuit story and this one is an awesome sequel to the story. I have raised horses for 50 years and am always looking for GOOD horse books - this one definitely qualifies!!! If you love horses you will love this book. Written so well that you cannot wait to turn the next page.

Ratings: 2 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: History, American
    Publisher's Summary:
The Civil War was the deadliest conflict in American history, and had the two sides realized it would take four years and inflict over a million casualties, it might not have been fought. Since it did, however, historians and history buffs alike have been studying and analyzing the biggest battles ever since. Americans have long been fascinated by the Civil War, marveling at the size of the battles, the leadership of the generals, and the courage of the soldiers. Since the war's start over 150 years ago, the battles have been subjected to endless debate among historians and the generals themselves.
The secession of the South was one of the seminal events in American history, but it also remains one of the most controversial. The election of Abraham Lincoln was the impetus for secession, but that was merely one of many events that led up to the formation of the Confederacy and the start of the Civil War. In less than two months, most of the Confederate states had seceded and formed their own Confederacy, and the battle lines had been drawn.
The Confederacy's hope of being let go in peace ended at 4:30 a.m. on the morning of April 12, 1861, when Confederate Brigadier-General P.G.T. Beauregard ordered the first shots to be fired at the federal garrison defending Fort Sumter in the Charleston Harbor, effectively igniting the Civil War. Today First Bull Run is remembered as the first important land battle of the Civil War, but with over 350 killed on each side, it was the deadliest battle in American history to date, and both the Confederacy and the Union were quickly served notice that the war would be much more costly than either side had believed.

Most of the prose written in this ebook is pedestrian and bland. I would have liked detailed descriptions of the decisive battles with follow-up paragraphs. Overall, it was just ok but could have been much better with a little more thought.
Good basic primer for Civil War studies
Nice little basic primer for a starting look at the Civil War. It does not get into heavy detail but provides a decent overview of the major points of the conflict.
good review of the major battles
A quick review of start to finish of the battles before and after Gettysburg. A better understanding of the political battle as well.
    Informative
I've read many books on the civil war. This rates in the top 50%. I would read more of this author's books.
    Really enjoyable
This book helped me grasp a better understanding of the civil war. Definitely worth sharing with people you know. Who are interested in this time period.

    Genres: History, American
    Publisher's Summary:
Doc Holliday and Kate Elder begin their doomed love affair in Tombstone, Arizona. Meanwhile, Wyatt Earp and his wife, Josephine, harbor a dark secret that may affect just how long Doc and Kate stay in Tombstone - or how long they live.
Katie Elder was more, much more, than the title character in John Wayne's 1965 western, The Sons of Katie Elder. She was more than the portrayal by Faye Dunaway in the 1971 film Doc. Katie Elder was a real person, whose background was perhaps more plaid than checkered.
Some historians of the Old West believe she was Mrs. Doc Holliday, and some don't. Either way, she was quite a bit more than the "plainswoman" that revisionist history books call her. Katie herself never denied that she was a rip-roarin', hard-drinkin,' gun-slingin' prostitute.
In this book, author Brian Lee Tucker places a whole new and refreshing spin on the legend of Doc and Kate.

Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: History, American
    Publisher's Summary:
This audiobook is about the Delaware Blues and their indefatigable officers, particularly Peter Jaquett and Robert Kirkwood. These soldier-comrades from Delaware - the only Continental Regulars to serve from their state - earned unrestrained praise for steadfastness and valor. Captain Enoch Anderson of the Blues noted, "Let it be observed here, once and for all, the Delaware Regiment was never broken, no, not in the hottest fire!" General Henry "Light Horse Harry" Lee declared, "No regiment in the army surpassed it in soldiership!"
A partial list of their battle honors includes Harlem Heights, Brooklyn, White Plains, Trenton, Princeton, Brandywine, Germantown, Monmouth, Camden, Cowpens, Guildford Courthouse, and the Siege of Yorktown. The only major northern campaigns of the revolution in which the Delaware Regiment did not serve after 1776 were the Saratoga and Mohawk Valley Campaigns of 1777-1778. The men from both these states served with steady distinction throughout much of the war, and were some of the men Washington could trust even from the earliest days of the revolution, when so many Patriots were ill trained and green to the terrors of armed conflict.

I don't like it. This book has alot of general information ...
Yup. I don't like it. This book has alot of general information that takes up most of the books pages vs being focused on the Delaware Continentals. Much of what is specific to the Delaware Blues is not good and not properly researched. The Domenick D'Andrea painting especially is the most blatant observation of what should not be in this book. Very disappointed and would not recommend a buy here.
