The Haymarket Affair came about through a chain of events which took place before the demonstrations actually happened. The Civil War was a major event in regards to the history of America, because it played a major role in the way that the country progressed. This war was a long and bloody battle which was responsible for draining both the American population and economy. After the Civil War ended, the country went into a depression known as the Depression of 1873-1879.
The Industrial Revolution was also a very important historical event that was taking place during this time. The American economy took a major shift toward industrial production, and many warehouses and factories were created in order to expand production. Most of the cities that were responsible for becoming major industrial centers were on the northern half of the United States. The city of Chicago quickly became one of the biggest centers for industrial labor in America.

    Title: Blues City
    Subtitle: A Walk in Oakland
    Author: Ishmael Reed
    Narrator: Ishmael Reed
    Format: Abridged
Length: 2 hrs and 6 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-20-16
    Publisher: Random House Audio
    Genres: History, American
    Publisher's Summary:
Oakland is a blues city, brawling and husky....
Often overshadowed by San Francisco, its twinkling sister city across the Bay, Oakland is itself an American wonder. The city is surrounded by and filled with natural beauty - mountains and hills and lakes and a bay - and architecture that mirrors its history as a Spanish mission, a gold rush outpost, and home of the West's most devious robber barons. It's also a city of artists and blue-collar workers, the birthplace of the Black Panthers, neighbor to Berkeley, and home to a vibrant and volatile stew of immigrants and refugees.
In Blues City, Ishmael Reed, one of our most brilliant essayists, takes us on a tour of Oakland, exploring its fascinating history, its beautiful hills and waterfronts, and its odd cultural juxtapositions. He takes us into a year in the life of this amazing city, to black cowboy parades and Indian powwows, to Black Panther reunions and Gay Pride concerts, to a Japanese jazz club where a Lakota musician plays Coltrane's "Naima". Reed provides a fascinating tour of an untamed, unruly Western outpost set against the backdrop of political intrigues, ethnic rivalries, and a gentrification-obsessed mayor, opening our eyes not only to a singular city but to a newly emerging America.

    Oakland Reconsidered
"Blues City," which is a part of a series of books published by Crown that features prominent authors and their observations of several key locations around the United States, is written by Ishmael Reed ("Mumbo Jumbo," "Flight to Canada," etc.) about Oakland, California. Reed, known for his "writin' is fightin'" style of nonfiction (see his most recent collection of essays, "Another Day on the Front" [2003], for a taste of his pugilistic prose), is as calm as you will see him in "Blues City." A journal of sorts, Reed relates his experiences on various historical tours around Oakland as well as his attendance at scattered cultural festivals around the city. In the process, Reed portrays Oakland as an important site of multicultural achievement, as a city inhabited by whites, blacks, latinos, asians and gays who have contributed significantly to the economic and cultural development of the city. It is interesting to note that Reed does not dwell on Oakland's present-day reputation as a hotbed of crime. But he is not entirely apologetic about this city which he definitely loves. He cites how the founding of Oakland happened because East Coast whites stole land from the Peralta family who inhabited the land before them. He also talks about the drug epidemic that plagues the Oakland neighborhood he lives in. The most poignant sections of the book focus on David Hilliard, one-time chief of staff of the Black Panther Party for Self Defense. Reed attends a tour of sites of historical importance to the Black Panthers. The Panthers had been highly influential regarding Oakland politics over the years, but their contributions have been neglected, forgotten or viewed as criminal disruptions (see Elaine Brown's "A Taste of Power" [1992] for a more detailed description of the Black Panthers' immersion into the political world of Oakland), and Hilliard's tour is filled with fond memories as well as darker ones.

  • The Wreck of the America in Southern Illinois Audiobook by Mark J. Wagner

Title: The Wreck of the America in Southern Illinois
Subtitle: A Flatboat on the Ohio River
    Author: Mark J. Wagner
    Narrator: Robert Diepenbrock
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 3 hrs and 18 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-28-16
    Publisher: University Press Audiobooks
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 3 votes
    Genres: History, American
    Publisher's Summary:
Flatboats were the most prolific type of vessel on the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers during the early 1800s. Thousands of these boats descended the two rivers each year, carrying not only valuable cargo to New Orleans but also western-bound emigrants to newly opened territories. By the late 1800s, flatboats had completely disappeared, and no intact examples were known to exist.
That changed in 2000, when local residents found a wreck on the Ohio River shoreline in Illinois. Archaeologist Mark J. Wagner and his colleagues from Southern Illinois University Carbondale investigated extensively and established that the wreck was a pre-Civil War flatboat, which they named America after a nearby town.
In The Wreck of the America in Southern Illinois: A Flatboat on the Ohio River, Wagner provides a brief description and general history of flatboats and the various reasons they wrecked - such as poor workmanship and encounters with pirates, storms, rocks, and floating trees. Wagner describes the remains of the America, how it was constructed, the artifacts found nearby and inside - including pewter spoons, utensils with bone handles, metal buttons, and an iron felling axe - and the probable cause of its sinking. Wagner concludes with a history of the America since its discovery in 2000.
The book is published by Southern Illinois University Press.
    Critic Reviews:
"This book will become the source for helping to record other flatboat wrecks that will certainly appear." (Leslie C. Stewart-Abernathy, Station Archeologist, Arkansas Archeological Survey)
"Provides an informative history of flatboats, assessing their construction, purpose, and the many hazards faced by their crews." (Missouri History Review)
    Members Reviews:
    Captivating
In 2000 an old boat was found on the Ohio River shoreline in Illinois by local residents. Mark J. Wagner an archaeologist from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and his colleagues investigated the wreck in 2002. They performed an intensive investigation and determined it was a pre-civil war flatboat. They named it America after a nearby town.
Wagner provides a detailed report of the field work performed including the construction of the boat to artifacts found in and near the wreck. Wagner also provides a possible cause for the wreck of the boat.
Wagner goes on to provide a history of the flatboats which, she says, was the most prolific type of vessel on the Ohio and Mississippi rivers in the early 1800s. The author says the flatboats disappeared from the rivers after the Civil War probably due to more steamboats and the advancing railroads. This is the only flatboat ever found on the rivers and they would like to preserve it and place it in a museum before the Ohio River destroys it completely but as with most historical items there is no money available. This book was published in 2015 by the Southern Illinois University Press.
The book is well written and easy to read. I have always found archaeology fascinating and enjoy reading about discoveries. I would love to go on a dig again; maybe someday that might happen. I was particularly interested in this book as I was at the Southern Illinois University campus in Carbondale this spring. Wish I had known about the boat, I would have gone to see it. This is a short book at about four hours.
Robert Diepenbrock does a good job narrating the book.

    Narrator: Charles Hield
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 7 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-28-16
    Publisher: University Press Audiobooks
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: History, American
    Publisher's Summary:
In his presidential Farewell Address of 1796, George Washington presented a series of maxims to guide the construction of a wise foreign policy. He believed, as did generations of his adherents, that if the United States stayed true to the principles he discussed, the country would eventually attain national greatness and international respectability. By focusing on the enduring influence of the Farewell Address on 19th-century Americans, and on their abiding devotion to Washington, Jeffrey Malanson brings the Address back into the spotlight for 21st-century listeners. When citizens gathered in town halls, city commons, and local churches to commemorate Washington, engagement with the Farewell Address was a cornerstone of their celebrations. This annual re-dedication to Washington's principles made the Farewell Address both a framework for the attainment of national happiness and prosperity, and a blueprint for national security.
Through its focus on the diplomatic, political, and cultural impacts of Washington's Farewell Address, Addressing America reasserts the fundamental importance of this critical document to the development of the United States in the first half of the 19th century.
    Critic Reviews:
"All readers interested in this period should take note of this important new study." (Jay Sexton, University of Oxford)
"Changes the way we think about the Farewell Address and is a must-read for scholars interested in the early republic." (John M. Belohlavek, University of South Florida)

Thomas Jefferson and the Tripoli Pirates: The Forgotten War That Changed American History | Summary
    Book Preview:
The United States of America fought hard to become an independent nation in the latter half of the 18th century. A select few of these battles are remembered more than others, and they overshadow one of the most decisive victories this budding nation acquired. Brian Kilmeade and Don Yaeger's Thomas Jefferson and the Tripoli Pirates: The Forgotten War That Changed American History explores this war, fought against the Barbary nations in Northern Africa.
The Barbary pirates were incessantly attacking US cargo ships, thus impairing international trade, as well as taking the crews of these ships as prisoners. Despite the US's desire for simple negotiations, the Barbary leaders forced high tariffs (some referred to these tariffs as "purchased peace") on the US ships passing through their waters. For a considerable amount of time, US Congress held the belief that appeasing the Barbary's demands (paying such excessively high sums of money) was the best way to approach this situation. The consensus essentially being that it is easier to pay them off than to fight them off. One player in the US government (Thomas Jefferson) held a different belief. The only way to fight off the pirates, regain access to trade in the area, and free the US citizens who had been taken prisoner, was to go to war.

    Publisher: University Press Audiobooks
    Genres: History, American
    Publisher's Summary:
This text provides an understanding of the complex relationship between the Continental army and the state militias during the Revolutionary War in America. It also shows how George Washington used the militia with skill, even though he distrusted them.
The book is published by The Kent State University Press.
    Critic Reviews:
The work is very well written and thoroughly researched. (Library Journal)
This solid, workmanlike monograph gives the reader a greater appreciation of the performance of the states and their leaders in the northern theater of the war. (American History)
    Members Reviews:
    An unreadable, poorly focused study
Washington's Partisan War is an unreadable, poorly focused study of the militia in the northern states during the Revolution. The author violates a cardinal rule of writing-he does not know quite what to leave OUT. Instead Washington's Partisan War tells of almost every militia muster, movement, skirmish, disbanding, etc. until one is totally lost in a (poorly written) forest of minute details. Context is significantly lacking here, and Kwansy fails to adequately tie in all of his facts to make useful conclusions. While Washington's Partisan War may be useful to some studying specific aspects of the middle states duringthe conflict, this book should be avoided by the general reader for the reasons above, as well as its terrible prose.
Lots of trees but little forest
This book suffers from dry prose, lack of focus and the inability of the author to leave anything out! It is just a poor read, sad to say.....
A civil war within the Revolution
The book not only points up Washington's genius at extending the tenets of the formal warfare of the 18th century, something for which he is rarely credited, but records the civil war between Tory and Patriot (Whig) within that war. It clearly demonstates the strengths and limitations of depending upon the citizen soldier, a lesson relevant today. Since the book deals primarily with the war around the New York metropolitan area, it will be especially interesting to anyone living in the area. I think enough of the book to buy a new copy and give it to our local library. John Higgins
    Five Stars
    Great Item.
a wonderful focused work on Washington's use of the militia.
I think this book was very enlightening about the role of the militia and how Washington creatively used them along with regular military during the Revolutionary War. Being a New Jersey native, I was appreciative of the author's feel for the area. I gained a new appreciation for Washington as a military strategist. Definitely worth reading!
