Connecting young children to Israel
Laura Gehl did a wonderful job of taking a popular children's tale and connected it to the land of Israel. A perfect book for preschoolers for Yom Ha'Azmaut or any time of the year.

Wonderful book for young children!
This is a fun retold tale of the Hare and Tortoise that young children will love!
Hare and Tortoise were sitting in a little café near the Hashalom train station. They were great friends and what better to do than to have a conversation while sipping away on their beverages? Well, on some days they tossed their polka dotted ball back and forth while âthey frolicked at the beach.â Tel Aviv was a great place to check out museums and they âdined on carrots and hummus before attending the opera.â One day, as they hung around watching the trains at Hashalom, Hare announced that he was some speedy and just might be faster than those trains.
Tortoise looked up at Hare and laughed, âYou are fast, my friend, but you are not as fast as a train.â Not very likely, but certainly Hare was faster than Tortoise. The bragging went on until there was a challenge ... it would be a race to the Dead Sea! Hare and Tortoise were soon on their way, making their way out of Tel Aviv traffic. Beep, beep! The race was on and they couldnât waste any time. Tortoise was calling out âshalomâ to everyone, but Hare was hopping right along. Hare was so far ahead he could stop to buy apricots in Jerusalem, check out a soccer game in Independence park, and enjoy âa cup of tea and flaky baklavaâ with a Bedouin. No doubt Hare was going to win this race, or would he?
This is a fun retold tale of the Hare and Tortoise that young children will love. Of course this race across Israel is different that Aesopâs, but equally exciting as the friends race toward the Dead Sea. The tale is predictable, but the charm factor is great. In the back of the book is a map that young children can check out so theyâll know where the duo is headed. The artwork is lively and I enjoyed visiting places like the market and the Bedouinâs tent along the way. Children can also learn about foods such as hummus, rugelach, and falafel. This retold tale is one classic tale you wonât want to miss!

Israeli geography lesson and a moral
In this retelling of the famous Aesop fable, the Hare and the Tortoise decide to race from Tel Aviv to the Dead Sea.
In Jerusalem Hare stops to shop in Machane Yehuda, watch a ball game in Independence Park, and listen to street musicians on Ben Yehuda Street. By that time Tortoise had caught up with him.
Hare takes off again -- but again stops-- this time to have tea and baklava at a Bedouin tent and to nap under a date palm at the oasis.
Once again, Tortoise catches up and then wins. They agree on the obligatory moral ("slow and steady wins the race") and then both animals jump into the Dead Sea to cool off.
There's a two-page spread at the back of the book that follows their route from Tel Aviv to the Dead Sea.
