    Scientistâs Mind, Monkâs Heart
Ellen Moyerâs book, Our Earth, Our Species, Our Selves: How to Thrive while creating a Sustainable World, went on a 10-day fishing trip to Canada with me. It was the first book I have ever immediately re-read.
I found the her arguments relevant and well-annotated. Like many sustainability writers, she provides a wealth of information about the state of our industrialized practices that are destroying the planet, but she more importantly she reflects on how she arrived at being an action-oriented earth steward from childhood to adulthood. Her focus on personal development and significance of self reflection through life's struggles has particular application and was a great connecting point for me. She shares many personal experiences along her journey in a deep, reflective manner, further engaging my interests and deepening my self actualization process. Ellen craftily connects diet, exercise and meditation into how we can build a better, more sustainable economy and a much healthier planet. Clearly, she talks the talk AND walks the walk!
    I highly recommend this book.
An Upbeat Conversation with You and Me
âOur Earth, Our Species, Our Selvesâ has rightfully earned numerous positive reviews for its content and clarity. Iâd like to touch on part of the book that has, to some extent, received less attentionâits use of âchunkingâ to present its message. Information is divided into small pieces or chunks to help the reader understand the material easily and quickly. Short chapters are typically divided into six or seven sections with clear headings. Personal comments from the author appear in gray boxes. Indented and centered call-outs are printed in italics and then framed by double lines to call attention to key points presented in the body of the text. For example, "Computers recently revolutionized our way of life and our economy. Now, sustainability can do the same." Overall, the book makes good use of white space that invites the reader to delve into the material. The proposals for action in the text are, in fact, so accessible that readers can easily understand how they can start working to improve the environment. The book is not a treatise but rather a conversation with you and me as the ones who need to help make things better.
It is easy to get discouraged
Ellen Moyer is not fooling around. In just 200 pages she covers a huge amount of well-researched information that we need if we are going to save our world from environmental disaster. The stakes could not be higher. It is easy to get discouraged. But Dr.

Frank Abagnale Jr., however, was hardly a typical con artist. Cunning and charismatic, Abagnale forged checks, diplomas, and transcripts en route to assuming at least eight identities and posing as a pilot, a lawyer, and a doctorall before his nineteenth birthday. Although he eventually was caught and sentenced to 12 years in a federal prison for his cons, he served less than five years before the U.S. government recruited him to fight the very types of crimes that he had perpetrated so successfully himself. He also became the subject of a Hollywood blockbuster film starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Catch Me If You Can.

    Genres: Science & Technology, Environment
    Publisher's Summary:
A century of industrial development is the briefest of moments in the half billion years of the Earth's evolution. And yet our current era has brought greater changes to the Earth than any period in human history. The biosphere, the globe's life-giving envelope of air and climate, has been changed irreparably. In A World to Live In, the distinguished ecologist George Woodwell shows that the biosphere is now a global human protectorate and that its integrity of structure and function are tied closely to the human future.
The earth is a living system, Woodwell explains, and its stability is threatened by human disruption. The assumption that we can continue to use fossil fuels and "adapt" to climate disruption, Woodwell argues, is a ticket to catastrophe.
But Woodwell points the way toward a solution. We must respect the full range of life on Earth - not species alone, but their natural communities of plant and animal life that have built, and still maintain, the biosphere. We must recognize that the Earth's living systems are our heritage and that the preservation of the integrity of a finite biosphere is a necessity and an inviolable human right.
    Critic Reviews:
"George Woodwell has brought pathbreaking science, sound policy judgment, and great humanity to the major issues...And it all comes brilliantly through in his informative, highly readable, and bracing new book." (James Gustave Speth, Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies)
"From the dean of US climate scientists, a wise and eloquent call to common-sense climate and environmental policy. Its message is authoritative but accessible, urgent without panic, visionary but practical." (David W. Orr, Oberlin College)

    Tainted World View
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
A complete waste of my time. I would rather be outside enjoying things instead of inside thinking the sky is falling. This is what I get from listening to this book.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
I don't think this story was supposed to be an enjoyable story. I think even though the author claims it was not a memoir, it certainly was. Though he has had some experience with these things he claims have plundered our planet, I think he is living under a cloud of doom and despair of ever having peace of mind about our environment. Unfortunately, he seems to have no answers, so he wants to share.
What does W.B. Ward bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
I wouldn't have picked up a print copy of this book. Listening to Mr. Ward is the only thing redeemable about this work.
Was A World to Live In worth the listening time?
    Absolutely not.
    Any additional comments?
I struggled through the first four chapters where the author mentioned things he only thinks he knows about, including mountain top removal in WV. He manages to mention no less than four types of energy production, but none of them are good enough. He gives no indication of what would be. When I finally decided to listen again, it would not load, so I decided to give my review.

    Publisher's Summary:
Steeped in the faith tradition of the American Transcendentalists (the majority of whom, like Emerson, were Unitarian ministers), the author's own spiritual life was likewise grounded and guided by nature. So of course she said yes to a career in interim ministry that would require her to relocate every summer. What would each new landscape, from Nevada to Vermont to Colorado to Arizona to South Carolina to Maine, have to teach her spirit? After all, there was more to learn from nature than could be found in New England, wasn't there?

A Great Book for Personal Reflection or Guided Reflections in a Group
As an interim minister myself, one who has moved often from one end of the country to the other, I was intrigued to see how this author would link her own itinerant ministry with a sense of place in one place after another. She did it beautifully. In each chapter, she gave me vivid pictures of both landscape and culture. Better yet, she showed how landscape -- the nature of a place -- helps to create the nature of the people there as well as how the people leave their mark on the place. It is this intricate system of causes and effects that intrigued me throughout the book. But there was still more for me in the author's sensitivity to showing what it is really like to uproot oneself and then inevitably put down new roots somewhere else, and then equally inevitably uproot yet again. One has to be at home in oneself to do it. What this minister-as-author shows is that being at home in the nature of the place where you are enables you to be at home in yourself no matter where you are and thus able to minister to a new congregation of people in a new place, time after time. All these intricacies in the book work so well and come across so meaningfully to a reader because Gail Collins-Ranadive is herself a fine writer, one who creates images that a reader can really see and who weaves idea with image so that a reader can really understand. I could easily see using this book as guide for a group meeting multiple times for reflection. In fact, at the back of the book I found suggestions for reflection based on each chapter.
What a wonderful book -- Follow Gail's journey as she rediscovers nature ...
