Having touched on 2023 last week in review, let's see what 2024 has in store. It's going to be a unique year, and I don't think with new attractions/offerings being announced just last week, that even we have seen all that will still come to guests in this upcoming calendar year. Still, we'll share what we know as we go across Disney parks worldwide to see what's happening with over 30 new attractions and offerings. Other than Walt Disney himself, there is in my mind no other individual who has made such a dent on what people know as the Disney theme park experience than Dick Nunis, whose passing has been made public today, December 13th, 2023. He is a Disney legend, and without his leadership, projects like Magic Kingdom and Epcot and Typhoon Lagoon would have never gotten to the finish line. His leadership was as impressive as any individual involved in the parks. And his leadership style--it was many times controversial. No one got results and made things happen like Dick Nunis. My colleagues spoke often of how he mentored the leaders around him and spoke so keenly about the guest experience. And yet others spoke of how he could verbally tear you apart like no other. Still, he is more than a Disney Legend. He is a force to be reckoned with. When Dick Nunis joined Disneyland in 1955, the Park employed 600 cast members. By the time he retired from his “summer job” 44 years later, Disneyland boasted 13,000 cast members and Walt Disney World employed another 50,000. He is a legend. And this podcast celebrates the essence of his leadership.

Finally! After what has been years of waiting, the center piece of what was formerly Future World is reopening as World Celebration in Epcot. We cover the opening day and what this central promenade looks like during the day time and night. It's like a brand new hub--only for Epcot and not Magic Kingdom. We also take the opportunity to see the premiere of Luminous on its first night as a replacement to Harmonious. This is a pivotal day for Epcot, the culmination of some 25 additional attractions and offerings made in Epcot within the last 5 years, and perhaps the most central moment tied to Disney's 100 celebration here at Walt Disney World. So we're bringing you the wonder and discovery of it all. It's where the impossible becomes possible. And it's opening on the 122nd birthday of Walt Disney. 35 years ago my wife and I came to Walt Disney World for the first time. It was 1988 and I had big bucket dreams of visiting since opening in 1971. We were finally established with our first child and a new one on the way. We set a course for Florida. Disney’s Hollywood Studios was still a year away, but Epcot was something totally unlike anything I had seen in my years at Disneyland, and the Magic Kingdom was supposed to be something far bigger than the original “Happiest Place on Earth” The experience was profound as it made us set sights on the idea of moving to Florida. I was asked recently by a listener which resort hotels should they stay at when visiting the Disney Parks in Asia. This is a great question, as huge new attractions and lands are opening in all three parks in the days and months to come. In this episode we'll celebrate a personal milestone for myself. Then we'll visit two fountains at Disney's Hollywood Studios and at Disney California Adventure. These fountains anonymously acknowledge William Mulholland and his contribution to bringing water to the state of California. He was a key figure in Golden Dreams, an early Disney California Adventure presentation that celebrated the heritage of the Golden State. He was even the namesake of an early Disney roller coaster attraction. We'll look at this fascinating figure and the leadership lessons that can be found from his life and legacy.

I am sharing this podcast on the 100th anniversary of The Walt Disney Company. Founded on October 16th, 1923, Walt and Roy agreed to produce a series of Alice cartoon shorts. It was a start that was clouded by bankruptcy, unemployment and illness.
