On this episode of Diva Tonight, Carlene welcomes Tammy and Kim, a couple who have been together for 10 years and married for just over a year, for a candid and uplifting conversation about love, marriage, independence, and how the COVID-19 pandemic changed the way they experienced life together. Their story is anything but conventional — and that may be exactly what makes their relationship work.
Tammy and Kim share the story of how they met, beginning with a community vigil in Waterloo and a friendship that eventually developed into a long-term relationship. They talk about their journey from meeting each other to celebrating a decade together, and how they managed to get married during the pandemic despite the many obstacles. Their wedding was intentionally small and intimate, with just five people present, and became an example of making the best of an unexpected situation. (Buzzsprout)
The conversation looks at one of the biggest questions couples faced during the pandemic: How do you maintain a healthy relationship when you're suddenly spending almost all of your time together? For Tammy and Kim, being together at home actually brought them closer. Rather than focusing on what they couldn't do, they looked for ways to create joy and adventure in their own home.
Their love of travel became one of the most creative examples of this. Unable to travel internationally, Tammy created a project where she and Kim would essentially "travel" to a different country every week. Over approximately 30 weeks, they explored different cultures through food, language, music, traditions, and activities. They cooked dishes from countries including Morocco and Poland and even recreated cultural experiences in their own home. (Buzzsprout)
But the heart of the episode is really about what makes a relationship last.
Tammy and Kim openly discuss the challenges they experienced earlier in their relationship, including learning how to navigate conflict, understand each other's needs, and recognize that they are two individuals rather than one person. One of the most powerful lessons they share is the idea that your partner is not responsible for your happiness. They explain how learning to take responsibility for their own emotional well-being actually strengthened their relationship rather than creating distance. (Buzzsprout)
They also challenge the traditional idea of compromise. Instead of believing that one person always has to give something up for the other, they have learned that sometimes the healthiest solution is simply to do different things. Tammy loves dancing while Kim enjoys rock climbing, so they don't feel obligated to participate in every activity together. Giving each other the freedom to pursue individual interests allows them to return to their time together happier and more fulfilled. (Buzzsprout)
Another major theme is freedom within a relationship. Tammy describes the freedom Kim gives her to be completely herself, pursue her own dreams, and express who she is without feeling that she has to change to fit the relationship. They celebrate each other's accomplishments and support each other's individual paths while maintaining shared values around joy, adventure, laughter, and experiencing life. (Buzzsprout)
Carlene also asks the couple about soulmates, independence, dating, and being single. Their answer challenges the idea that another person must "complete" us. They explain that each person should be a whole individual on their own, and that a relationship should be about two people choosing to share their journey rather than depending on one another for their identity or happiness. They offer an encouraging perspective for single listeners as well: being single isn't something that needs to be rushed through — it can be an opportunity to discover yourself and create the life you want. (Buzzsprout)
Tammy and Kim also talk about redefining what marriage and relationships can look like. They don't believe couples have to follow traditional rules simply because that's what society expects. They discuss having separate bedrooms, pursuing separate interests, and even the possibility of couples maintaining separate homes while remaining married. Their message is that couples should be honest about what works for them rather than trying to fit someone else's definition of a successful relationship. (Buzzsprout)
The conversation also touches on interracial and intercultural relationships. Tammy and Kim come from different cultural backgrounds, and they share how their relationship has allowed each of them to experience and embrace aspects of the other's culture. From carnival and soca to Asian culture, food, language, and traditions, they explain how their differences have added richness to their relationship rather than becoming barriers. (Buzzsprout)
Throughout the episode, Tammy and Kim bring a refreshing message of joy, gratitude, independence, acceptance, and openness. Their experience during the pandemic demonstrates that even when circumstances change dramatically, couples can find ways to adapt, grow individually, and continue creating meaningful experiences together.

How Does Anti-Oppression Affect Us?
What does anti-oppression really mean, and how does it affect our everyday lives?
In this episode of Diva Tonight, Carlene sits down with Maureen Brown, an anti-racism, anti-oppression and inclusion specialist, for an honest and eye-opening conversation about racism, systemic oppression and the ways these issues can show up in our workplaces, communities and everyday interactions.
Maureen shares her journey from journalism and community work to becoming a diversity and anti-oppression specialist. She explains the difference between individual and systemic racism, why understanding our unconscious assumptions matters, and why creating meaningful change requires more than simply having conversations about diversity and inclusion.
Carlene and Maureen also talk about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the murder of George Floyd on conversations about racism, the rise of anti-racism discussions, and what it means for organizations to move beyond simply talking about inclusion.
And then the conversation gets personal.
From questions about Black hair to the experience of having someone touch your hair without permission, Carlene and Maureen explore how seemingly innocent actions can have deeper roots — and why understanding those roots is an important part of creating change.
This is a conversation about learning, reflection, awareness and taking action.
Join Carlene and Maureen as they unpack some difficult but important questions about race, identity, inclusion and anti-oppression.

Do large social gatherings leave you feeling completely energized, or do you find yourself needing a "social hangover" cure right after? 🔋 Knowing whether you are an introvert or an extrovert is about more than just how talkative you are—it dictates how you protect your mental health, manage your emotional bandwidth, and navigate your closest relationships.
In this episode of Diva Tonight, host Carlene Humphrey welcomes back independent singer-songwriter and musician R Shelley. Moving past the music-only discussions of her previous visit, Shelley opens up about her personal experiences living alone through multiple pandemic lockdowns, tracking the subtle shifts in her long-distance friendships, and managing her mental health as a performing artist.
Together, Carlene and Shelley demystify the classic misconceptions surrounding introverts (spoiler: loving the stage doesn't make you an extrovert!). They share actionable advice on how to gracefully remove toxic drama from your circle, why you should leave judgment behind when friends fail to text back, and how to harness your natural internal clock to build a balanced daily routine.
If you are trying to find the sweet spot between isolating yourself and overextending your social battery, this episode offers a gentle, relatable guide to understanding your needs. ✨
