    Length: 00:59:24

    Genres: Fiction & Literature, Poetry

    Summary:

Kabir, meaning Great and one of the 99 names of God in Arabic, was a mystic and poet, born around 1440 in Varanasi to poor Muslim parents. Another account claims he was the child of a Brahmin widow. He himself said he was "at once the child of Allah and Ram."Kabir grew up learning his fathers craft of weaving and overcame many obstacles to become a disciple of Saint, or Swami, Ramananda, the leading pioneer of the Bhakti movement, which promoted salvation for all. Kabir did not renounce his worldly life; he married, had children, and was disdainful of professional piety, which led to his later persecution by religious authorities. His progressive philosophy spoke of social equality and his spiritual synthesis combined Hindu tenets of karma and reincarnation with Muslim beliefs of one god and no idolatry or caste system. We know that Kabir had no formal education and was almost illiterate. He expressed his poems as bs meaning utterances in Hindi. His songs and couplets were part of a strong oral tradition in the region and spread across northern India but were also written down by two of his disciples; Bhgods and Dharmads. His inventive and imaginative style captured wide attention and provided a path to spiritual awakening which for Kabir was mainly the path of love and brotherhood and not to be divorced from daily life: All our actions performed anywhere are our duties, and work is worship, he said. His works are still revered today by Muslims, Sufis, Sikhs and Hindus and Kabir remains one of the most quoted mystic poets of all time. Kabir is thought to have lived an exceptionally long life and probably died in 1518. It is said that his Hindu followers wanted him cremated and his Muslim followers wanted his body buried and a fight therefore ensued. When they finally lifted the cloth that covered his body they found not flesh but flowers.

H P Lovecraft, even the name has a sliver of the night about it. Born in 1890 in Providence, Rhode Island he was a prodigious youth but a sickly one. Raised mainly by his Grandfather and Aunts at 14 he contemplated suicide on the death of his grandfather and the crushing financial blow that brought to himself and his mother. A set of literary spats in a newspaper brought him attention away from his poetry writings. But until the last decade of his life the works for which we is so well know did not arrive. That last decade, writing again in Providence was prolific but with little income his life downgraded rented house by rented house and in 1936, often malnourished he was diagnosed with cancer and succumbed to it the following year.

Genres: Fiction & Literature, Short Stories

    Summary:

William Pett Ridge was born at Chartham, near Canterbury, Kent, on 22nd April 1859.His familys resources were certainly limited. His father was a railway porter, and the young Pett Ridge, after schooling in Marden, Kent became a clerk in a railway clearing-house. The hours were long and arduous, but self-improvement was Pett Ridges goal. After working from nine until seven oclock he would attend evening classes at Birkbeck Literary and Scientific Institute and then to follow his passion; the ambition to write. He was heavily influenced by Dickens and several critics thought he had the capability to be his successor. From 1891 many of his humourous sketches were published in the St James's Gazette, the Idler, Windsor Magazine and other literary periodicals of the day.Pett Ridge published his first novel in 1895, A Clever Wife. By the advent of his fifth novel, Mord Em'ly, a mere three years later in 1898, his success was obvious. His writing was written from the perspective of those born with no privilege and relied on his great talent to find humour and sympathy in his portrayal of working class life.Today Pett Ridge and other East End novelists including Arthur Nevinson, Arthur Morrison and Edwin Pugh are being grouped together as the Cockney Novelists. In 1924, Pugh set out his recollections of Pett Ridge from the 1890s: I see him most clearly, as he was in those days, through a blue haze of tobacco smoke. We used sometimes to travel together from Waterloo to Worcester Park on our way to spend a Saturday afternoon and evening with H. G. Wells. Pett Ridge does not know it, but it was through watching him fill his pipe, as he sat opposite me in a stuffy little railway compartment, that I completed my own education as a smoker. With his success, on the back of his prolific output and commercial success, Pett Ridge gave generously of both time and money to charity. In 1907 he founded the Babies Home at Hoxton. This was one of several organisations that he supported that had the welfare of children as their mission. His circle considered Pett Ridge to be one of life's natural bachelors. In 1909 they were rather surprised therefore when he married Olga Hentschel. As the 1920s arrived Pett Ridge added to his popularity with the movies. Four of his books were adapted into films. Pett Ridge now found the peak of his fame had passed. Although he still managed to produce a book a year he was falling out of fashion and favour with the reading public and his popularity declined rapidly. His canon runs to over sixty novels and short-story collections as well as many pieces for magazines and periodicals.William Pett Ridge died, on 29th September 1930, at his home, Ampthill, Willow Grove, Chislehurst, at the age of 71.He was cremated at West Norwood on 2nd October 1930.

The problem with the dark is you dont really know whats lurking in there. Something hiding? Something menacing? Or just an inky dome for the stars to twinkle on? Writers rarely let us dwell on the latter. No, they would much rather they put our nerves on edge, that our skin would begin to crawl and that the cold sweat of fear propels our pulse and heartbeat to nightmare inducing trauma. I think theyre ready.

He was awarded the Nobel prize for literature in 1907.Born in Bombay on 30th December 1865 both he and his sister were sent back to England when he was five, as was the custom of the British ruling elite in India. The ill-treatment and cruelty by the couple they boarded with in Portsmouth had one useful effect that Kipling himself suggested; it gave him an early impetus for a literary life. This was further enhanced by his return to India at the age of sixteen to work on a local paper. Not only did this result in him writing constantly but also gave him the opportunity to explore issues of identity and national allegiance which pervade much of his work.Whilst he is best remembered for his many classic childrens stories and a host of popular poems including If. he is also regarded as a major innovator in the art of the short story.
