    Genres: Fiction & Literature, Poetry

    Summary:

The Caroline era was dominated by the growing religious, political and social conflict between the King and his supporters; the Royalists and it's Puritan opposition; the Roundheads. In contrast to the wars raging across Europe at the time, the Caroline period in Britain was an uneasy peace, as a dark shadow of civil conflict between King and Parliament worsened toward the latter part of Charles reign.Whilst Theatre unquestionably fell from its glittering peak achievements of William Shakespeare and Ben Jonson, in Poetry the standard was perhaps only just shy of this bar. This Caroline period saw the flourishing of the Cavalier poets including Thomas Carew, Richard Lovelace and Sir John Suckling and the Metaphysical poets including George Herbert, Henry Vaughan and Katherine Phillip. These movements had also given birth to the talents of the masterful John Donne, as well as lyrically satisfying artists like Robert Herrick. To this heady, yet eclectic mix we can add the early work of John Milton. In this volume we demonstrate that these poets, quite rightly, make the Caroline Age one of the glories of poetry.

    Summary:

Islam is one of the worlds great religions and over the centuries one of its strongest voices. For Peace. For Tolerance. For the realisation that we are all in this World together. Whatever our individual beliefs much of its teachings are wise words for us all.As Islam moved from its Arabian heartland to a wider geographic area so its core message remained albeit adapted to different lands, to different ears. Poets were ever eager to provide an alternate way of delivering the message in beautiful verse. Their simplicity was embracing, their ornateness a humble offering to greater forces. The poems here are both profound and wide-ranging. They give verse to thoughts that still preoccupy mankind as central to their message is love and humility. Civilisations may come and go, rise and fade, but culture and its arts linger on in oral histories and the written word. The contribution of these Mystic or Sufi poets comes in many forms. They view the world in ways that give us pause to reconsider our own. Obviously, translations come in many shades and hues and even if the translator colours the original meaning of the poem, the essential truths remain. In this volume we have gathered many of the most celebrated of these ancient and classical verses by poets of the caliber and brilliance of Rumi, Kabir, Hafiz and many others. Their wise words illuminate much of what we search for.

    Language: English

    Release date: 01-01-20

Genres: Fiction & Literature, Short Stories

    Summary:

Born in 1857 in Poland, Joseph Conrad became a British citizen just before he turned 30. In the intervening years he lost both parents; as an orphan aged 11 he was therefore raised by an uncle, who at 16 let the boy go to Marseille to work on merchant ships where the colourful life of the sea was further enhanced by stints gun running and, intriguingly, political conspiracy. At age 36 his life turned from one of ships to one of literary pursuit. In doing so Conrad brought to English Literature a further layer of style and a deeper examination of the human psyche in a wealth of work. He wrote many novels, rightly regarded today, as some of the finest in English literature. Among their canon are Lord Jim, Nostromo, The Shadow Line and, of course, Heart Of Darkness. For this volume we dwell among his numerous short stories. In these condensed, narrative structures much is said in beautiful language. His characters may be brave, comic, serious, trapped by their own constraints, or as in the Brute, the ship itself, but are always fully formed and true to his word.
