Recommended Reading: Born a Crime by Trevor Noah
I really appreciate Noah's insight into heavy topics such as systemic/interpersonal/and internalized racism, sexism, abuse, and the complexities of mixed and intersectional identities while also including humor, reflection, the beauty of strong family bonds, friendship, forgiveness, and joy. It's educational, as he includes so much about how history impacts us in the present (from our family's history and how that ties to our greater connected histories as cities, states, and countries) so learning about South African Apartheid from someone who lived it and how he connects it to similar issues that exist in America is very eye-opening. He is just a refreshing writer and voice, he brings humility into everything and it allows for such good conversations with students and friends about life truly exists in the nuances.
