Entrance Antiphon.

First Reading: Ezekiel 12:1-12

A reading from the Book of the Prophet Ezekiel.

The word of the Lord came to me: 
“Son of man, you dwell in the midst of a rebellious house, 
who have eyes to see, but see not, 
who have ears to hear, but hear not; 
for they are a rebellious house. 
Therefore, son of man, 
prepare for yourself an exile’s baggage, 
and go into exile by day in their sight; 
you shall go like an exile 
from your place to another place in their sight. 
Perhaps they will understand, 
though they are a rebellious house. 
You shall bring out your baggage by day in their sight, 
as baggage for exile; 
and you shall go forth yourself at evening in their sight,

carrying my outfit upon my shoulder in their sight. 

In the morning the word of the Lord came to me: 
“Son of man, has not the house of Israel, 
the rebellious house, said to you, 
‘What are you doing?’ 
Say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God: 
This oracle concerns the prince in Jerusalem 
and all the house of Israel who are in it.’ 
Say, ‘I am a sign for you: 
as I have done, so shall it be done to them; 
they shall go into exile, into captivity.’ 
And the prince who is among them 
shall lift his baggage upon his shoulder in the dark, 
and shall go forth; 
he shall dig through the wall and go out through it; 
he shall cover his face, 
that he may not see the land with his eyes.”

Peter came up and said to Jesus, 
“Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me,

As many as seven times?”

Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you seven times, 
but seventy times seven.

 “Therefore the kingdom of heaven may be compared 
to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants. 
When he began the reckoning, 
one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents;
and as he could not pay, 
his lord ordered him to be sold, 
with his wife and children and all that he had, 
and payment to be made. 
So the servant fell on his knees, imploring him, 
‘Lord, have patience with me, 
and I will pay you everything.’ 

And out of pity for him, 
the lord of that servant released him 
and forgave him the debt. 
But that same servant, as he went out, 
came upon one of his fellow servants 
who owed him a hundred denarii; 
and seizing him by the throat he said, 
‘Pay what you owe.’ 

So his fellow servant fell down and begged him, 
‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you.’ 

He refused and went and put him in prison 
till he should pay the debt. 
When his fellow servants saw what had taken place, 
they were greatly distressed, 
and they went and reported to their lord 
all that had taken place. 
Then his lord summoned him and said to him, 
‘You wicked servant! 
I forgave you all that debt because you begged me; 
and should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, 
as I had mercy on you?’ 
And in anger, his lord delivered him to the jailers, 
till he should pay all his debt. 
So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, 
if you do not forgive your brother from your heart.”

Now when Jesus had finished these sayings, 
he went away from Galilee 
and entered the region of Judea beyond the Jordan.

and with them was a man clothed in linen, 
with a writing case at his side. 
And they went in and stood beside the bronze altar.

Now the glory of the God of Israel 
had gone up from the cherubim on which it rested 
to the threshold of the house; 
and he called to the man clothed in linen, 
who had the writing case at his side.

“Go through the city, through Jerusalem, 
and put a mark upon the foreheads of the men

with the wheels beside them; 
and they stood at the door of the east gate of the house of the Lord; and the glory of the God of Israel was over them.

These were the living creatures 
that I saw underneath the God of Israel 
by the river Chebar; and I knew that they were cherubim. 
Each had four faces, and each four wings, 
and underneath their wings the semblance of human hands. 
And as for the likeness of their faces,

“O faithless and perverse generation,

How long am I to bear with you? 
Bring him here to me.”

Jesus took with him Peter 
and James and John his brother, 
and led them up a high mountain apart. 
And he was transfigured before them, 
and his face shone like the sun, 
and his garments became white as light. 
And behold, there appeared to them 
Moses and Elijah, talking with him. 
And Peter said to Jesus, 
“Lord, it is well that we are here; 
if you wish, I will make three booths here, 
one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.” 
He was still speaking, when behold, 
a bright cloud overshadowed them, 
and a voice from the cloud said, 
“This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; 
listen to him.” 
When the disciples heard this, 
they fell on their faces, and were filled with awe. 
But Jesus came and touched them, saying, 
“Rise, and have no fear.” 
And when they lifted up their eyes, 
they saw no one but Jesus only.

And as they were coming down the mountain, 
Jesus commanded them, 
“Tell no one the vision, 
until the Son of man is raised from the dead.”

First Reading: Jeremiah 31:1-7

A reading from the Book of Jeremiah.

“At that time, says the Lord,
I will be the God of all the families of Israel,
and they shall be my people.”
Thus says the Lord:
“The people who survived the sword
found grace in the wilderness;
when Israel sought for rest,
the Lord appeared to him from afar.
I have loved you with an everlasting love;
therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you.
Again I will build you, and you shall be built,
O virgin Israel!
Again you shall adorn yourself with timbrels,
and shall go forth in the dance of the merrymakers.
Again you shall plant vineyards
upon the mountains of Samaria;
the planters shall plant,
and shall enjoy the fruit.
For there shall be a day when watchmen will call
in the hill country of Ephraim: 
‘Arise, and let us go up to Sion,
to the Lord our God.’”

“Sing aloud with gladness for Jacob,

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew.

At that time: 
Jesus went away 
and withdrew to the district of Tyre and Sidon. 
And behold, 
a Canaanite woman from that region came out and cried, 
“Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; 
my daughter is severely possessed by a demon.” 

But he did not answer her a word. 
And his disciples came and begged him, saying, 
“Send her away, for she is crying after us.” 

He answered, 
“I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”

But she came and knelt before him, saying, 
“Lord, help me.” 

And he answered, 
“It is not fair to take the children’s bread 
and throw it to the dogs.” 

She said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs 
eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.” 

Then Jesus answered her, 
“O woman, great is your faith! 
Let it be it done for you as you desire.” 
And her daughter was healed instantly.

The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: 
Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: 
“Write in a book all the words that I have spoken to you:

‘For thus says the Lord:
Your hurt is incurable,
and your wound is grievous.
There is none to uphold your cause,
no medicine for your wound,
no healing for you.
All your lovers have forgotten you;
they care nothing for you;
for I have dealt you the blow of an enemy,
the punishment of a merciless foe,
because your guilt is great,
because your sins are flagrant.
Why do you cry out over your hurt? 
Your pain is incurable. 
Because your guilt is great, 
because your sins are flagrant, 
I have done these things to you.’

‘Thus says the Lord:
Behold, I will restore the fortunes of the tents of Jacob,
and have compassion on his dwellings;
the city shall be rebuilt upon its mound,

At that time, Pharisees and scribes 
came to Jesus from Jerusalem and said, 
“Why do your disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? 
For they do not wash their hands when they eat.” 
And he called the people to him and said to them, 
“Hear and understand: 
not what goes into the mouth defiles a man, 
but what comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man.” 
Then the disciples came and said to him, 
“Do you know that the Pharisees were offended 
when they heard this saying?” 
He answered, 
“Every plant which my heavenly Father 
has not planted will be rooted up. |
Let them alone; they are blind guides. 
And if a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into a pit.”
