R/. The Lord speaks of peace for his people.

I will hear what the Lord God speaks;
he speaks of peace for his people and his faithful,
and those who turn their hearts to him.

Merciful love and faithfulness have met;
justice and peace have kissed.
Faithfulness shall spring from the earth,
and justice look down from heaven.

Also the Lord will bestow his bounty,
and our earth shall yield its increase.
Justice will march before him,
and guide his steps on the way.

Gospel: Matthew 19:23-30

At that time: 
Jesus said to his disciples, 
“Truly, I say to you, 
it will be hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. 
Again I tell you, 
it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle 
than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” 
When the disciples heard this they were greatly astonished, 
saying, “Who then can be saved?” 

But Jesus looked at them and said to them, 
“With people this is impossible, 
but with God all things are possible.” 

Then Peter said in reply, 
“Behold, we have left everything and followed you. 
What then shall we have?” 

Jesus said to them, “Truly, I say to you, 
in the new world, 
when the Son of man shall sit on his glorious throne, 
you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, 
judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 
And everyone who has left houses 
or brothers or sisters or father or mother 
or children or lands, for my name’s sake, 
will receive a hundredfold, and inherit eternal life. 
But many that are first will be last, 
and the last first.

R/. O Lord, remember us with the favour
​you show to your people.

They failed to destroy the peoples,
as the Lord had commanded them;
instead, they mingled with the nations,
and learned to act as they did.

They also served their idols,
and these became a snare to entrap them.
They even offered their sons
and their daughters in sacrifice to demons.

So they defiled themselves by their actions;
their deeds were those of a harlot.
Then God’s anger blazed against his people;
he was filled with horror at his heritage.

Time after time he rescued them,
but in their malice they dared to defy him.
In spite of this he paid heed to their distress,
so often as he heard their cry.

Gospel: Matthew 19:16-22

At that time: 
Behold, one came up to Jesus, saying, 
“Teacher, what good deed must I do, to have eternal life?” 

And he said to him, 
“Why do you ask me about what is good?

If you would enter life, keep the commandments.” 

He said to him, “Which?” 

And Jesus said, “You shall not kill, 
You shall not commit adultery, 
You shall not steal, 
You shall not bear false witness, 
Honour your father and mother, and, 
You shall love your neighbour as yourself.” 

The young man said to him, 
“All these I have observed; 
what do I still lack?” 

Jesus said to him, “If you would be perfect, 
go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, 
and you will have treasure in heaven; 
and come, follow me.” 

When the young man heard this he went away sorrowful; 
for he had great possessions.

God’s temple in heaven was opened. 

And a great sign appeared in heaven, 
a woman clothed with the sun, 
with the moon under her feet, 
and on her head a crown of twelve stars; 
she was with child, 
and she cried out in her pangs of birth, 
in anguish for delivery. 
And another sign appeared in heaven; 
behold, a great red dragon, 
with seven heads and ten horns, 
and seven diadems upon his heads. 
His tail swept down a third of the stars of heaven 
and cast them to the earth. 
And the dragon stood before the woman 
who was about to bear a child, 
that he might devour her child when she brought it forth; 
she brought forth a male child, 
one who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron, 
but her child was caught up to God and to his throne, 
and the woman fled into the wilderness, 
where she has a place prepared by God.

“Now the salvation and the power

In those days: 
Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, 
to a city of Judah, 
and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. 
And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, 
the child leapt in her womb; 
and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit 
and she exclaimed with a loud cry, 
“Blessed are you among women, 
and blessed is the fruit of your womb! 
And why is this granted me, 
that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 
For behold, when the voice of your greeting came to my ears, 
the child in my womb leapt for joy. 
And blessed is she who believed 
that there would be a fulfilment 
of what was spoken to her from the Lord.”

And Mary said:
“My soul magnifies the Lord, 
and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour, 
for he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden. 
For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed; 
for he who is mighty has done great things for me, 
and holy is his name. 
And his mercy is on those who fear him 
from generation to generation. 
He has shown strength with his arm, 
he has scattered the proud 
in the imagination of their hearts, 
he has put down the mighty from their thrones, 
and exalted those of low degree; 
he has filled the hungry with good things, 
and the rich he has sent empty away. 
He has helped his servant Israel, 
in remembrance of his mercy, 
as he spoke to our ancestors, 
to Abraham and to his posterity forever.”

And Mary remained with her about three months, 
and returned to her home.

In those days: 
Joshua spoke to the people saying, 
“Now therefore fear the Lord, 
and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness; 
put away the gods which your ancestors served beyond the River, 
and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. 
And if you be unwilling to serve the Lord, 
choose this day whom you will serve, 
whether the gods your ancestors served 
in the region beyond the River, 
or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell; 
but as for me and my house, 
we will serve the Lord.”

Then the people answered, 
“Far be it from us that we should forsake the Lord, 
to serve other gods; 
for it is the Lord our God who brought us and our ancestors
up from the land of Egypt, 
out of the house of bondage, 
and who did those great signs in our sight, 
and preserved us in all the way that we went, 
and among all the peoples through whom we passed; 
and the Lord drove out before us all the peoples, 
the Amorites who lived in the land; 
therefore we also will serve the Lord, 
for he is our God.”

But Joshua said to the people, 
“You cannot serve the Lord; 
for he is a holy God; 
he is a jealous God; 
he will not forgive your transgressions or your sins. 
If you forsake the Lord and serve foreign gods, 
then he will turn and do you harm, 
and consume you, 
after having done you good.” 

And the people said to Joshua, “No; 
but we will serve the Lord.” 

Then Joshua said to the people, 
“You are witnesses against yourselves 
that you have chosen the Lord, to serve him.” 

And they said, “We are witnesses.” 

He said, 
“Then put away the foreign gods which are among you, 
and incline your heart to the Lord, the God of Israel.” 

And the people said to Joshua, 
“The Lord our God we will serve, 
and his voice we will obey.” 

So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, 
and made statutes and ordinances for them at Shechem. 
And Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God; 
and he took a great stone, 
and set it up there under the oak 
in the sanctuary of the Lord. 
And Joshua said to all the people, 
“Behold, this stone shall be a witness against us; 
for it has heard all the words of the Lord which he spoke to us; therefore it shall be a witness against you, 
lest you deal falsely with your God.” 
So Joshua sent the people away, 
every man to his inheritance. 

After these things Joshua the son of Nun, 
the servant of the Lord, died, 
being a hundred and ten years old.

to give a certificate of divorce, 
and to put her away?”

“For your hardness of heart 
Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, 
but from the beginning, it was not so.

whoever divorces his wife, except for unchastity, 
and marries another, commits adultery; 
and he who marries a divorced woman, commits adultery”. 

The disciples said to him, 
“If such is the case of a man with his wife, 
it is not expedient to marry.”

“Not all men can receive this precept, 
but only those to whom it is given. 
For there are eunuchs who have been so from birth, 
and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by others, 
and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs 
for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. 
He who is able to receive this, 
let him receive it.”

First Reading: Joshua 3:7-10a.11.13-17

In those days: 
The Lord said to Joshua, 
“This day I will begin to exalt you in the sight of all Israel, 
that they may know that, 
as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. 
And you shall command the priests 
who bear the ark of the covenant, 
‘When you come to the brink of the waters of the Jordan, 
you shall stand still in the Jordan.’” 

And Joshua said to the Israelites, 
“Come here, and hear the words of the Lord your God.” 
And Joshua said, 
“Hereby, you shall know that the living God is among you, 
and that he will without fail 
drive out from before you the Canaanites.  
Behold, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth 
is to pass over before you into the Jordan.
And when the soles of the feet of the priests 
who bear the ark of the Lord, 
the Lord of all the earth, 
shall rest in the waters of the Jordan, 
the waters of the Jordan shall be stopped from flowing, 
and the waters coming down from above 
shall stand in one heap”.

So when the people sit out from there tents, 
to pass over the Jordan 
with the priest sparing the ark of the covenant 
before the people, 
and when those who bore the ark had come to the Jordan, 
and the feet of the priests bearing the ark 
were dipped in the brink of the water 
(the Jordan overflows all its banks 
throughout the time of harvest), 
the waters coming down from above stood 
and rose up in a heap far off,
at Adam, the city that is besides Zarethan, 
and those fowing down toward the sea of the Arabah, 
the Salt Sea, 
were wholly cut off; 
and the people passed over opposite Jericho. 
And while all Israel were passing over on dry ground,
the priests who bore the ark of the covenant of the Lord 
stood on dry ground in the midst of the Jordan, 
until all the nation finished passing over the Jordan.

First Reading: Deuteronomy 34:1-12

In those days: 
Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, 
to the top of Pisgah, which is opposite Jericho. 
And the Lord showed him all the land, 
Gilead as far as Dan, 
all Naphtali, the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, 
all the land of Judah as far as the western sea, 
the Negeb, and the Plain, that is, 
the valley of Jericho the city of palm trees, 
as far as Zoar.
And the Lord said to him, 
“This is the land of which I swore 
to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, 
‘I will give it to your descendants.’ 
I have let you see it with your eyes, 
but you shall not go over there.” 
So Moses the servant of the Lord 
died there in the land of Moab, 
according to the word of the Lord, 
and he buried him in the valley 
in the land of Moab opposite Beth-peor; 
but no one knows the place of his burial to this day. 
Moses was a hundred and twenty years old when he died; 
his eye was not dim, 
nor his natural force abated. 

And the people of Israel 
wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days; 
then the days of weeping and mourning for Moses were ended.

And Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, 
for Moses had laid his hands upon him; 
so the people of Israel obeyed him, 
and did as the Lord had commanded Moses. 
And there has not arisen a prophet since in Israel like Moses, 
whom the Lord knew face to face, 
none like him for all the signs and the wonders 
which the Lord sent him to do in the land of Egypt, 
to Pharaoh and to all his servants and to all his land, 
and for all the mighty power 
and all the great and terrible deeds 
which Moses wrought in the sight of all Israel.

So Moses continued to speak these words to all Israel. 
And he said to them, 
“I am a hundred and twenty years old this day; 
I am no longer able to go out and come in.

‘You shall not go over this Jordan.’ 
The Lord your God himself will go over before you; 
he will destroy these nations before you, 
so that you shall dispossess them; 
and Joshua will go over at your head, 
as the Lord has spoken. 
And the Lord will do to them 
as he did to Sihon and Og, 
the kings of the Amorites, and to their land, 
when he destroyed them. 
And the Lord will give them over to you, 
and you shall do to them according 
to all the commandment which I have commanded you. 
Be strong and of good courage, 
do not fear or be in dread of them: 
for it is the Lord your God who goes with you; 
he will not fail you or forsake you.”

Then Moses summoned Joshua, 
and said to him in the sight of all Israel, 
“Be strong and of good courage; 
for you shall go with this people 
into the land which the Lord 
has sworn to their fathers to give them; 
and you shall put them in possession of it. 
It is the Lord who goes before you; 
he will be with you, he will not fail you or forsake you; 
do not fear or be dismayed.”

unless you turn and become like children, 
you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. 
Whoever humbles himself like this child, 
he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. 
Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me.

See that you do not despise one of these little ones; 
for I tell you that in heaven 
their angels always behold the face of my Father 
who is in heaven.

What do you think? 
If a man has a hundred sheep, 
and one of them has gone astray, 
does he not leave the ninety-nine on the hills 
and go in search of the one that went astray?

than over the ninety-nine that never went astray.

and with all your soul, 
and to keep the commandments and statutes of the Lord, 
which I command you this day for your good? 
Behold, to the Lord your God belong heaven 
and the heaven of heavens, 
the earth with all that is in it; 
yet the Lord set his heart in love upon your ancestors 
and chose their descendants after them, 
you above all peoples, as at this day. 
Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart 
and be no longer stubborn.

However, not to give offence to them,

and take the first fish that comes up, 
and when you open its mouth you will find a shekel; 
take that and give it to them for me and for yourself.”

First Reading: Wisdom 18:6-9

That night was made known beforehand to our fathers,
so that they might rejoice in the sure knowledge 
of the oaths in which they trusted. 
The deliverance of the righteous 
and the destruction of their enemies 
were expected by your people. 
For by the same means by which you punished our enemies
you called us to yourself and glorified us. 
For in secret the holy children of good men offered sacrifices, 
and with one accord agreed to the divine law, 
that the saints would share alike the same things, 
both blessings and dangers; 
and already they were singing the praises of the fathers.

Gospel: Luke 12:32-48

At that time: 
Jesus said to his disciples, 
“Fear not, little flock, 
for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. 
Sell your possessions, and give alms; 
provide yourselves with purses that do not grow old, 
with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, 
where no thief approaches and no moth destroys. 
For where your treasure is, 
there will your heart be also. 

Let your loins be girded and your lamps burning, 
and be like men who are waiting for their master 
to come home from the marriage feast, 
so that they may open to him at once 
when he comes and knocks. 
Blessed are those servants 
whom the master finds awake when he comes; 
truly, I say to you, 
he will put on his apron and have them sit at table, 
and he will come and serve them. 
If he comes in the second watch, or in the third, 
and finds them so, 
blessed are those servants! 
But know this, 
that if the householder had known
at what hour the thief was coming, 
he would have been awake 
and would not have left his house to be broken into. 
You also must be ready; 
for the Son of man is coming 
at an hour you do not expect.” 

Peter said, 
“Lord, are you telling this parable for us or for all?” 

And the Lord said, 
“Who then is the faithful and wise steward, 
whom his master will set over his household, 
to give them their portion of food at the proper time? 
Blessed is that servant 
whom his master when he comes will find so doing. 
Truly, I tell you, 
he will set him over all his possessions. 
But if that servant says to himself, 
‘My master is delayed in coming,’ 
and begins to beat the menservants and the maidservants 
and to eat and drink and get drunk, 
the master of that servant will come 
on a day when he does not expect him 
and at an hour he does not know, 
and will punish him, 
and put him with the unfait
