A reading from the Book of the Prophet Hosea

Israel is a luxuriant vine
that yields its fruit.
The more his fruit increased
    the more altars he built;
as his country improved
    he improved his pillars.
Their heart is false;
    now they must bear their guilt.
The Lord will break down their altars,
    and destroy their pillars.

For now they will say:
    “We have no king,
for we fear not the Lord,
    and a king, what could he do for us?”

Samaria’s king shall perish,
    like a chip on the face of the waters.
The high places of Aven, the sin of Israel,
    shall be destroyed.
Thorn and thistle shall grow up
    on their altars;
and they shall say to the mountains, Cover us,
    and to the hills, Fall upon us.
Sow for yourselves righteousness,

Israel made kings, but not through me.
    They set up princes, but without my knowledge.
With their silver and gold they made idols

    My anger burns against them.
How long will it be
    till they are pure in Israel? 

A workman made it;
    it is not God.
The calf of Samaria
    shall be broken to pieces. 

For they sow the wind,
    and they shall reap the whirlwind.
The standing grain has no heads,
    it shall yield no meal;
if it were to yield,
    aliens would devour it.

Because Ephraim has multiplied altars for sinning,

Getting into a boat 
Jesus crossed over and came to his own city. 
And behold, they brought to him a paralytic, lying on his bed; 
and when Jesus saw their faith he said to the paralytic, 
“Take heart, my son; your sins are forgiven.” 

And behold, some of the scribes said to themselves, 
“This man is blaspheming.” 
But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, 
“Why do you think evil in your hearts? 
For which is easier, 
to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ 
or to say, ‘Rise and walk’? 
But that you may know that the Son of Man 
has authority on earth to forgive sins”—
he then said to the paralytic—
“Rise, take up your bed and go home.”

two demoniacs met him, coming out of the tombs,

“What have you to do with us, O Son of God?

Now a herd of many swine 
was feeding at some distance from them. 
And the demons begged him, 
“If you cast us out, send us away into the herd of swine.”

the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea 
and perished in the waters. 
The herdsmen fled, 
and going into the city they told everything, 
and what had happened to the demoniacs.

Does a young lion cry out from his den,
    if he has taken nothing?
Does a bird fall in a snare on the earth,
    when there is no trap for it?
Does a snare spring up from the ground,
    when it has taken nothing?
Is a trumpet blown in a city,
    and the people are not afraid?
Does evil befall a city,
    unless the Lord has done it?
Surely the Lord God does nothing,
    without revealing his secret
    to his servants the prophets.
The lion has roared;
    who will not fear?
The Lord God has spoken;
    who can but prophesy?”

“I overthrew some of you,
    as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah,
    and you were as a brand plucked out of the burning;
yet you did not return to me,”
                says the Lord.

“Therefore thus I will do to you, O Israel;
    because I will do this to you,
    prepare to meet your God, O Israel!”

At that time: 
When Jesus got into the boat, 
his disciples followed him. 
And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, 
so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; 
but he was asleep. 
And they went and woke him, saying, 
“Save, Lord; we are perishing.” 
And he said to them, 
“Why are you afraid, O men of little faith?” 
Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea; 
and there was a great calm. 
And the men marveled, saying, 
“What sort of man is this, that even winds and sea obey him?”
