Episode 56: JAMES MOONEY- Defending Indian Spirituality & Culture since 1918 (N.A.C.)

James ‘Flaming Eagle’ Mooney is an American Native Black Seminole, and a bloodline descendant of Seminole Medicine Man and War Chief Osceola and his escaped African American slave wife. James is also the namesake and bloodline descendant of one James Mooney, Irish-Scottish son of Irish Catholic immigrants, and American born U.S. Citizen. James Mooney was employed as an Ethnologist at the Smithsonian Institute, Washington D.C. Here is an account of three men doing everything in their power to assist the indigenous peoples and their ancient ceremonies of North America to survive the onslaught of atrocities perpetrated by misguided United States government agencies for more than 200 years.

War Chief Osceola was an influential Seminole leader who fought the United States to a standstill in the Florida Everglades, during the second Seminole War, also known as the Florida War of 1835. James’s ancestral family fought the U.S. military in an attempt to stop the expulsion of our First Nations people from their ancestral homeland and bringing about the deliberate annihilation of our indigenous culture.

In 1918, James’s forefather James Mooney fought a war of words before Congress, successfully halting the passage of a Peyote law that was designed to make illegal the entire American Native way of life. Pointedly, the dominant Christian religious mainstream sought to end our earth-based ceremonies and healing and empowerment rites, supplanting these traditions with those imported from across the seas. Of late, this codified denial of our constitutionally guaranteed religious freedom was promoted and enforced by a federal agency known as the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA). James’s great grandfather’s successful defense of our sacrament before Congress was a first step in a long journey to restore and maintain our ancient heritage.

Executive Producer/Founder of International Center of Spiritual and Ancestral Wisdom, Adam Yellowbird talks about a gathering he was promoting with the Kogi in Sedona. The Kogi are an indigenous people living in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountains of northern Colombia, in South America. They are the only civilization to have survived the Spanish conquests and to have kept their individuality.

The Kogi are perhaps the only indigenous people in the world who, because of the particular nature of their surroundings, have been able to keep themselves apart and sustain their culture inviolate. And not only that, they believe it is their duty to look after the mountain which they call "The Heart of the World". They call themselves the Elder Brother and refer to the new- comers as the Younger Brother, who they believe is destroying the balance of the world.

In 1990 the Kogi decided they must speak out to the rest of the world. They had survived by keeping themselves isolated but they decided that it was time to send a message to the Younger Brother. They could see that something was wrong with their mountain, with the heart of the world.

Episode 54: MAD BEAR- The Great Peacemaker of the Iroquois

Note- The great Tuscarora medicine man and 6 Nations (Iroquois) political leader, Wallace "Mad Bear" Anderson (November 9, 1927 - December 10, 1985), traveled internationally as a Merchant Marine in the 50s & 60s. He wove together a global alliance of Indigenous Elders and founded the “American Indian Unity Movement”. Mad Bear provided the motivation for Blueotter, host of Prophecy Keepers, to collect prophecies from all over the world, as Mad Bear had hoped someone would do years earlier.

Note- This particular episode was produced using excerpts from the 1967 WBFO (Buffalo, NY) radio series on the Iroquois, called “A Nation Within A Nation”, which the American Physiological Society holds in their archives.

THE GREAT PEACEMAKER:

The Great Law of Peace is the oldest constitution in North America defining a system of participatory democracy that has sustained the Iroquois Confederacy since 1570 (or possibly 1000 years ago). At a time of terrible war, say tribal elders, a Great Peacemaker (Deganawida) emerged, with the help of Hiawatha (Onondaga), to inspire the warriors of 5 nations to bury their weapons of war. The Peacemaker planted on top of the weapons a sacred Tree of Peace and established a code of laws called Kaianerekowa, the Great Law of Peace.

Chief Jake Swamp (Mohawk) commented that “during the dark age of our history, humans no longer listened to the Original Instructions. Our Creator became sad, because there was so much crime, dishonesty, injustice, and war. So the Creator sent a Peacemaker with a message to be righteous and just, and make a good future for our children seven generations to come."
