Local musical legend DJ Nocturna will be spinning classic goth, darkwave, post punk, and alternative tracks at Ghost Light, a special after hours dance party held in Hawaii Theatre’s exclusive Weyand Room from 9 to 11 PM, Saturday, April 26.

DJ Nocturna is a radio and club DJ, promoter, and artist whose passion for music began at a very young age. She began in radio broadcasting over 20 years ago on Public Radio 89.3 FM. Shortly thereafter, she began hosting ‘A Feast of Friends Radio Show’ on KTUH 90.1 FM Honolulu held every Saturday night. ‘A Feast of Friends’ ran for more than 16 years. She currently hosts the ‘Queen of Wands Podcast’ and the ‘Queen of Wands Radio Show’ on Modsnap Radio every Saturday at 2 PM (Hawaii Standard Time), which replays every Tuesdays starting at 5 PM (HST). DJ Nocturna is also one of the resident DJs and promoters for Nextdoor’s Acid Wash HNL, the long-running ‘80s dance party in Honolulu.

In addition to great music from DJ Nocturna, Ghost Light will feature specialty cocktails and the chance to dance in one of Honolulu’s most elegant venues. This is a 21 and over event.

In February of this year I chatted with Montreal ethereal duo SU, the musical project of Sarah and Ursa. 

They released a new dual single, The Web 2.0//Arachnid  on February 12, with tracks  mixed and mastered by Justin Bennett  (Skinny Puppy, My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult) and music video by  Jordan Dorey

I had the pleasure to talk to frontman HARRY STAFFORD of Manchester post-punk legends INCA BABIES about the band's latest album Ghost Mechanic Nine, released on Black Lagoon Records. We also talked about the  "Inca Babies Documentary on the Making of Ghost Mechanic Nine - From 80s Hulme to 2024." 

A vibrant part of Britain's early postpunk/goth/death rock scene, INCA BABIES amassed a steady following through touring and releasing six singles and four albums, all entering the UK Indie Charts. They also recorded four sessions for BBC's legendary John Peel show between 1984 and 1988. The band reformed in 2007 and hasn't looked back since.

Stafford (guitar, keys, vocals) revisits the raw guitar sounds of the band's 80s output, joined by Rob Haynes (drums, percussion), Jim Adama (bass) and Kevin G. Davy (trumpet).

Aside from his own group Slick Idiot with Günter Schulz, across his storied career, En Esch has collaborated with artists such as Rammstein, FM Einheit of Einstürzende Neubauten, Mona Mur, My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult, Sister Machine Gun, and so much more.

Maintaining a steady output of solo work, beginning with 1993's Cheesy on TVT Records, En Esch's highly anticipated new LP Dance Hall Putsch – his first in eight years – is available now.

Cyborg Amok started in 2019 as a recording project comprised of vocalist and keyboardist Greg Bullock and his son, drummer Brydon Bullock. With a focus on performing Cyborg Amok songs in the live environment, the duo set out to write, record and present their unique music to the world. As our planet shutdown in early 2020, living in the same home allowed Greg and Brydon to continue to develop and record music together. So far, they have released two albums, their debut, self-titled album, “Cyborg Amok” (2021) and “Etiam” (2022), as well as several singles spanning 2022-24.

Pins and Needles, their first full album in over two years with a projected release in 2025. Joining Greg and Brydon are Mark Gemini Thwaite  (Peter Murphy, The Mission, Gary Human) on guitar and Emilio Zef China (Peter Murphy, Jonathan Davis, Psychic TV ) on bass.

I had the opportunity to chat again with vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Ashton Nyte, who founded the Darkwave/ Gothic Rock act The Awakening.  Now US-based, The Awakening was formed in Johannesburg South Africa in the 90s.  Nyte more recently released his 12th studio album also called "The Awakening. " 

With a catalogue of over 300 released original songs, Nyte and The Awakening have enjoyed airplay and chart success on radio stations worldwide, with songs featured in popular television shows like 'Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin' and 'The Purge'. Nyte has contributed to several scores, working with composer Ethan Gold for the movie 'Don't Let Go' (premiering at the Sundance Film Festival) and for the movie 'Pale Horse', directed by the late Pearry Teo.

Industrial-Electronic music legend Bill Leeb (Front Line Assembly, Delerium) signs to Iconic US-based label Metropolis Records to debut his solo album. Titled 'Model Kollapse', this record explores the intricacies of artificial intelligence and the very survival of humanity itself.

Based in Vancouver, Bill Leeb is the mastermind behind electro-industrial scene mainstays Front Line Assembly and ambient-pop duo Delerium, having gotten his start with Skinny Puppy (under the pseudonym Wilhelm Schroeder). He is also a key member of other occasional recording projects, including Noise Unit, Intermix, Cyberaktif and Conjure One,  just to name a few.

Leeb acknowledges the role that Metropolis Records has played in his recording career since the late 1990s, noting that “Metropolis Records have been and are one of the most important labels for alternative music on this planet and this album was made possible by my long-standing friendship with Dave Heckman (RIP), who continuously has supported us through the ages and gave us complete artistic freedom”. Tragically, Heckman died in the summer of 2022.
