Vancouver, Canada based, Hem Netjer creates dark electronic folk music. Inspired by the #MiddleEgyptian word for god's servant (Priest) they combine ancient stories, traditional instruments with modern technology. Haunting female vocals blended with deep throat singing and catchy synth lines create sounds that "moves the body and the soul."  

Raven Rissy  is the lead vocalist, songwriter and visual designer. She is classically trained in piano, clarinet, fiddle, harp, tagelharpa, rotta lyre and frame drum. Her Egyptology degree influenced their EP called Kemet, including the song "Anubis" sung in ancient Middle Egyptian. 

David Deckard combines traditional sounds and electronic music and specializes in digital sound design. As a computer programmer he experiments with different technologies and input devices with the goal to bring digital melodies to the stage in a way that feels as natural as a traditional instrument would.

Jesse Ellytt experimented with creating electronic music until discovering #throatsinging Using the traditional #tuvan style as a base, his deep reverberations mixed with digital basslines shapes into a unique combination of sounds and rhythms. His style of singing creates an experience that will be different each time a song is performed.

I spoke with Null Device's Eric Oehler and Jill Sheridan. 

Founded in 1995 in Wisconsin, Null Device is constantly experimenting and evolving their sound, drawing a wide variety of influences, passionately fusing everything from bhangra to post-punk to pop to ambient rock into their music. Null Device is always pushing the borders of synthpop, but what is constant is their soaring, catching melodies, lush vocals and meticulously-crafted production. The band consist of founder Eric Oehler (singer, songwriter, violinist) and Co-founder Eric Goedken (Lyricist and producer), Jill Sheridan (Singer, songwriter and long time contributor) and Kendra Kreutz (Cellist and system engineer ).

Null Device released their eight album, "The Emerald Age"by Distortion Productions. The album is available on CD and on all streaming and digital platforms. "The Emerald Age" explodes with synthpop hooks that collide with aggressive Berlin-influenced beats, propulsive body music bass, symphonic orchestration, and moody atmospherics.

Speaking to Rikard Tengvall of A Projection. The band first began in 2013 with influences such as The Cure, Joy Division, Interpol and Editors then went on to cut their first three albums which were firmly rooted in the post punk genre. In 2020, the band went through some changes that included their line up, their sound and their label. 

Currently, their latest 4th studio album entitled "In a Different Light" finds the band merging elements of dance flavored electronica with modern darkwave and classic ’80s post-punk; the results, as the band explains, present a shift from a “hard-boiled, minimalistic sound into a more readily accessible one,” while still adhering to the attitude and aesthetic that first defined A PROJECTION.  "In a Different Light" is available on Metropolis Records  on both limited vinyl and compact disc along with all digital and streaming platforms.

Post-Punk New Romantics Candy Coffins released their latest single "Tangled In Teacups " with accompanying video featuring ballet dancers juxtaposed in an urban landscape, produced and directed by The Pierson Collective.   The single is from Candy Coffins' LP called "Once Do It With Feeling," a 10-track collection with Cure-esque textures and melody.  

Lead vocalist and songwriter Jame Lathren said, "The full album chronicles a relationship from the onset of the first crack to its complete crumbling dissolution. All the feelings and emotions of tumult are captured here, from both persons’ perspectives." 

Formed in 2018 in Columbia, South Carolina, Lathren founded the band with guitarist Tom Alewine, followed by Alex Mabrey on bass, Justin Purdy on Keyboards and drummer Jonathan Bradley.

Dante-inspired gothic electro-rock trio called DISPEL released their latest LP called "INFERNO."  Produced by Dispel, the album was mastered at the Cage Studios in Coventry, England by Martin Bowes of Attrition. 

Based in Cleveland, Ohio, Dispel consist of lead vocalist Ravensea, Sean Gallows (Vocals and Bass) and Scott Dispel (Drums and Keyboards).  I spoke to Scott Dispel, a founding member of the old school hardcore band Face Value and former drummer for Textbeak and who is also a studio engineer, producer and award winning night club DJ. 

Based on Dante's literary masterpiece, the album "INFERNO" features a song for each layer of sin existing in the infernal realm. Dispel follows Dante and his guide Virgil down each layer of the Nine Hells, dedicating a song to each level of mortal sin. Sprinkled with diabolical personalities from ancient mythology and fantasy literature, this undertaking took two years to complete. Laced with dark melodies, vocal depth and spiritual quests, Dispel creates a unique musical narrative, channeled through the prism of historic lore, mythology and mysticism.

"Influenced by an equal mix of darkwave beats, Medieval literature, and conceptual rock albums, the music behind Dispel was born. But soon after the completion of our debut album ‘Lore’, the world went on lockdown! So we headed back into the studio to create another conceptual album, but we had to up the ante. A spiderweb-ridden bookshelf held the key - “Dante’s Inferno” in its timeless glory,"  says Scott Dispel.

Formed in early 2019 by members of Montreal-based indie artists Room Control, REPO, Scene Noir and Citylake, The Ember Glows is Richard Bunze (Guitar), Kevin Hills (Bass), Martin Saint  (Vocalist and Guitar) and Dan Stefik (Drums). 

Long-time friends since their teenage years, personal chemistry and musical synchronicity brought them together as The Ember Glows. With all four of them also being part of other bands, what started as a side-project ultimately became everyone’s main music priority,fueled by their jointly-forged sound and corresponding adrenaline. Each member brings something different to the table - Rich with his knack for texture and big sound, Kevin’s rumbling groovy bass lines, Dan’s manic and melodic drumming, and Martin’s delicate lacing of baritone and jangly guitars.

They released their single called Silent Love, a sonic exploration of steadfast love, the fragility of life and the power of silence.  Martin performs a solo acoustic version of Silent Love in this interview.

Alternative music legend Chris Connelly released his latest album,  paying tribute to the iconic Nico, the Velvet Underground muse and one of the most unique, tragic and misunderstood female artists in the history of music called "Eulogy to Christa: A Tribute To The Music and Mystique Of Nico,"

On this album, Connelly worked with producer and long time collaborator Chris Bruce.  "Eulogy to Christa" is a labor of love, empathy, sadness, acting and channeling, along with Connelly's adoration of the dark corner of rock inhabited by the Velvets and their peers. This album sees Connelly purposefully adopt the personas of Nico, Lou Reed and John Cale.  The album was inspired by the book "You Are Beautiful And You Are Alone" by Jennifer Otter Bickerdicke, who contributed to the album liner notes, noting "This is a record to be played at full blast, all the way through, as a commemoration not just to Nico the person, the musician, but to art for art's sake, for making something because it is important and needs to be done- an idea that is as rare and precious as Nico herself."

The Italian gothic metal band based in Berlin, Germany, Vlad in Tears  released their latest 8th studio album called "Porpora" on Metalville Records on September 19, 2022. 

The band consist of three brothers who decided to move from Italy to Germany in 2013, Kris (Lead vocalist and keyboards)  Dario (Bass) and Lex (Guitar). Their bandmate Alex joined them on drums. 

Since releasing several albums since 2006. Vlad in Tears are always looking for new sounds and arrangements to perfectly blend their melodies with very dark sounds, ranging from 80’s New Wave to the hardest and most modern rock sound. 

"Porpora," is a record described by Kris as their most important works so far. Written in a time of uncertainty, he explains "all the topics treated in this album are related to loneliness, sorrow, dark heavy thoughts about death, self-harm, and suicide.” They also released a cover of Kate Bush's 1985 classic "Running Up That Hill"

Frenchy and the Punk is made up of singer, percussionist, and lyricist Samantha Stephenson and guitarist and composer Scott Helland.

Dark times make for dark songs. "Zen Ghost" was written and recorded from 2020 to 2021 where the duo's shadowy sound takes an even darker turn. An inward spin into the pair’s previously unexplored personal planes and interpretations of the insanity of our increasingly tumultuous age. But despite its more pronounced moodiness, like the restof the band’s oeuvre, "Zen Ghost" offers plenty of opportunities to dance in the darkness.

French-born, but raised in England and America, Stephenson’s early study of piano and dance ignited her eventual rejection of corporate conformity and fueled her quest to lead a truly autonomous life through art and music. A son of jazz-loving teachers, Helland grew up in Western Massachusetts, where he was a vital player on the region’s famously fertile Deep Wound along Dinosaur Jr. founders J Mascis and Lou Barlow , as well as Outpatients.
