Grave Domain

The domain description of the grave domain sounds a lot like the spooky necromancer cleric option, but it's really the opposite. You gain a bunch of abilities that are great for keeping your allies alive and a couple bits of anti-undead tech and even a sneaky DPS boost to your cantrips. Putting it all together, the grave cleric is an ideal pick if your priority as a cleric is to keep your friends alive.

Tempest Domain

You call upon the natural energy of a storm deity to rain down thunder damage and lightning damage. The core of the tempest cleric is its Wrath of the Storm feature that lets you deal a good chunk of damage to anything that attacks you, and both thunder damage and lightning damage are fairly reliable damage types. The channel divinity: destructive wrath feature lets you spend your channels to maximize lightning or thunder damage, which happens after hits so you can even use it to maximize critical hits.

The domain spells also grant access to sleet storm and call lightning (though frustratingly not lightning bolt), making this domain one of the very few ways to gain this powerhouse spell outside of druid levels. And at the top of the tempest domain spell list, you pick up destructive wave, a powerful 5th level spell normally only found on the paladin spell list. Combined with the heavy armor proficiency, this domain works wonders for tank/dps builds looking to shrug the hits and dish out some lightning damage.

This is best of the defensive options for tanky clerics with some proper arcane armor and magic weapons. Between the Blessing of the Forge and Soul of the Forge abilities, a forge domain cleric can gain +2 AC on top of heavy armor. Start with one of the races that has a built in +1 AC like warforged or Simic hybrid, put on some full plate and add on a shield and your full casting cleric can have 23 AC as early as level 6!

Then just cast shield of faith to walk around the dungeon with a cool 25 AC. And why not, have some free fire damage resistance as a cherry on top! Other than the tanky aspect you basically get to turn your weapon into basic magic weapons with a damage and attack bonus. And you get some utility out of the channel divinity option, which lets you craft a nonmagical object. Combined with your arcane armor and magical weapon, the forge grants a touch of artificer feel in there as well.

Ever since Ashley Johnson from Critical Role introduced her new wildfire druid character Fearne Calloway, there's been a major increase in interest for the subclass and I'm happy to say it's one of the better options. So, if you're interested in starting a forest fire, healing some folks, and destructive tendencies, here's a bit more depth on how they work.

A wildfire druid gets a little flaming buddy called a wildfire spirit. It can be a primal spirit, a beast form, or even a humanoid figure, so long as it's fiery. When you first gain the archetype at 2 nd level, you form a mystical bond with a "wildfire spirit" and you get to summon it as an action to a spot within 30 feet by expending a use of your wild shape feature. The spirit stat block is based off your stats and proficiency bonus and advances in hit points and damage as you advance in druid level.

However, a wildfire druid's wildfire spirit isn't terribly strong as other summon spells go, and its strength at early levels is in a "burst" of fire damage when you summon it. Creatures other than you within 10 feet of your wildfire spirit when it's summoned take 2d6 fire damage (reflex save to halve), and you can summon wildfire spirit up to 30 feet out. It can then keep popping up with bursts of fire damage using its fiery teleportation feature, making your fiery buddy a nice little source of damage output during levels 2-5.

5th edition rangers were very quickly identified as the weakest class, and by a wide margin. Eventually WotC released “revised ranger” in an “unearthed arcana”. This revised version is significantly better than the original version in practically every way, but there are a couple catches.

Firstly, since “revised ranger” is still technically unofficial, you can’t use it at the adventurers’ league and some of the more purist DMs will disallow it.

Secondly, revised ranger has its own set of archetypes called “conclaves” and the base archetypes are incompatible with revised ranger and vice versa. So, if you’re eyeballing a new ranger archetype, you’ll have to use the old classic ranger, rather than the objectively better revised version.

Generally speaking, you should always be using revised ranger if you have the option. You’ll only want to utilize the base ranger if you’re specifically wanting to use a non-revised ranger archetype. Even then, simply taking revised ranger is usually the statistically stronger choice.
