Do We Really Need More Black Period Dramas?

Listen Later

Netflix's most-watched original series Bridgerton highlighted a new age for period dramas with more inclusive casting choices and classical covers of Ariana Grande, Dua Lipa and Taylor Swift. Similarly, in the theatrical production, Hamilton, tells the story of America's founding fathers through actors of colour. Should Black producers and screenwriters, look to going down this route, either with colourblind retellings of old stories, or uncoverings of untold stories such as Madame CJ Walker or Ma Rainey? Conversely, does the past tend to come with emotional baggage for Black people and we should focus on escaping into the present or future? As BJ from The Pilot Podcast asks "Do we want a Black 'Pride and Prejudice' or more Black Panther?" Fé Oj debates this with BJ & Mitu from The Pilot Podcast and Corrine, a PR executive and pop culture journalist.
