    Episode 6 – 501: Wisdom Series-Preservation

Let’s talk about Proverbs, Chapter 2 Take Aways

Chapter 2 of Proverbs addresses why it is important to seek

knowledge and wisdom. In short, the Proverb advises that knowledge and wisdom will help us to be discerning and help us to avoid being involved in situations and circumstances that are not beneficial to our ability to live fulfilled lives.  I think verses 10 and 11 of chapter 2 provide a nice summary of this idea.  They
    read:

(10)“When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is

pleasant unto thy soul, (11) Discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee;"

In our lives it is easy to get wrapped up in things that don’t

serve us or others. Sometimes juicy information that is ultimately gossip can come disguised in a wrapping of information to bring knowledge and understanding. It is important that we welcome knowledge and wisdom, and that we exercise the discretion and understanding that it provides.  Our use of discretion in the information we take in, and our understanding of the information we receive will help to keep us on a positive course that propels us forward.

So, for me, this is a great reminder of the importance of being discerning.  We don't always have a choice to keep junk mail or unnecessary information from coming our way, but we can use our experience and knowledge to discern what we need to pay attention to and keep and what things we can let go by the way side or perhaps put away for possible future reference. Being a person who seeks and appreciates wisdom and knowledge is a good thing and it is beneficial to help us excel in our abilities and to be beneficial in our professional and personal relationships,

    preserving them for the better.

    Episode 6 – 500: Wisdom Series-Learning & Focus

Let’s talk about Proverbs, Chapter 1 Take Aways

    Happy New Year 2024!

Sharing takeaways from my study of Proverbs, and their

application for personal and professional growth. The definition I like for a proverb is that it is a saying that contains truth, common sense, experience, and wisdom. Let's look at a couple of verses from the first chapter of the biblical book of Proverbs.

Proverbs 1:5 “A wise person will hear and will increase

learning; and a person of understanding shall attain unto wise counsel.

To grow and mature we must seek learning and knowledge.  That learning and knowledge can come from different

places and we know that truth can be tested and will withstand the test of time.  We also know that changing circumstances can
influence how we use our knowledge and how we take in learning. Learning and seeking counsel are important aspect for our personal and professional growth.

Proverbs 1:19 “So are the ways of every one that is greedy

of gain, which taketh away the life of the owners thereof.”

Sometimes things can get out of proper perspective when we

lose our focus, find ourselves focused on the wrong things, or allow our focus to detract from other priorities. We can be so focused on gaining things or achieving goals that we neglect relationships, health, and personal growth.   Times of beginning such as a new year are a great time to reconsider our focus, what matters, and ensure we are living our lives in alignment with our short and long term visions. When things get out of balance we can find ourselves indebted in a way that sucks the fulfillment and
joy out of life.  So, let’s be mindful that our strive to gain does not cross the line of greed, but remains at a healthy level that enriches our lives.

Episode 6 – 499: Box Series – Little Boxes Not All The Same

Let’s talk about one size not fitting all.

There is a song that talks about little boxes on the hillside that all look just the same, and it speaks to the lack of variance in experiences, expectation, and outcome. The reality is that no matter how similar our experiences may seem, they are not identical and one size, one solution, one approach will

not fit all.  I heard a quote recently that said when we try to be all things to everyone, we accomplish being nothing for anyone.

So, as we end this year and have the blessing to begin a new

year, I want us all to keep in mind that boxes come in different shapes and sizes, and they contain contents in different variety.
Variety can be a beneficial thing, especially if we use variety as a way to compliment, complete, build, create new opportunities, and realize new progress. It may seem a bit cliché to wish you prosperity in the new year, but I do hope for each of you the unique things that allow you to think, learn, grow, and live in your unique fullness.

Have a safe New Year and I hope you are back to join me in

    2024 for episode 500!

  • Episode 6 – 498: Box Series – Outside of the Box

Let’s talk about the importance of expanding from our foundations

Leftover from yesterday, consider that your experiences not

only help you uses the tools in your box, they equip you to use more tools.  Consider a barber or hairstylist who is giving you a trim. They pull out many different tools to cut and style your hair, versus getting your hair cut my Uncle Bob or Aunt Millie, with
scissors or a razor that likely need some sharpening.  Or consider an artist, who uses many brushes, other tools and mixes paint colors to create a masterpiece.  It is a far cry from the 8 box crayon set!  And so it is with our experiences, we start off learning to manage the basics and advance to operating where more
complexities exists and more critical thought and creativity is advantageous.

Let’s talk about the importance of what’s outside the box,

expanding from our foundations. When we know the basics of what is inside of our box and what is expected of us, we have the capacity to go beyond the basics.  We can use our depth of understanding to propel us forward.

It is great to follow the guidance and the rules, however, at some point one must move forward to uncharted courses to make advances and new discoveries.  When going outside of the box, the box still remains a constant reference point. There is much to be discovered for our benefit beyond what is currently known. I’ve told the story before about the newlywed who cut off the end of the roast before cooking it. She had seen her mother and grandmother do the same thing and she assumed this

was a necessary step.  However, when they asked the grandmother why she cut the roast, they learned it was because
her pan was too small to fit the roast. The newlywed and her mom had pans and ovens big enough to fit the whole roast. This is a reminder that the old way of doing things, while it might work, is not necessarily the best way for the current circumstances.

We must understand our resources and apply our learning and

creativity in a way that effectively progresses us forward and constantly considers our current circumstances.  When we
ensure we are knowledgeable about the impact of current circumstances, we can make choices and take action that is beneficial and relevant for the current situation and expected future situations. Be willing to think outside of the box and implement.  Remember, that each of us has a unique set of lived experiences that can help positively contribute to our situation.

  • Episode 6-497:Box Series – Inside of the Box

Let’s talk about the importance of what’s in the box

Knowing what’s in the box can help us.  When we know what is in the box, we understand the tools and resources that are available to us.  When we know what is in the box we better understand

how things may operate or function and how we can be most effective. So as individuals, it is important to take inventory of the tools and resources we have.  We can take inventory by
understanding how we are expected to contribute and what skills and abilities are needed. We can then assess if we have the resources and abilities to do what is expected of us either on our own or with available help.  If we find that we are at a deficit, we’ll
need to communicate in order to resolve the issue of the deficit. We can ask what resources are available to us and how they might assist us.  I once worked at an organization that had a
very talented marketing and communications department.  It seemed that the department was focused purely on client facing and business development work.  It turned out that they were also available for internal projects and this positively impacted our employee communications and expanded our internal communications to being something that could be used as examples to assist our clients, ultimately adding more value all around.

As leaders in an organization, it’s important to ensure people

have the tools to do their job. It is also important that managers help employees to understand how the organization functions. When employees are empowered by understanding how the organization functions and by building relationships throughout the organization, they can function with more of an owner’s mindset, looking out for the company and the client.

These ideas also translate into our personal lives.  When we know what tools we have available and we work on ensuring we have the tools we need to be good communicators, good supporters, and good mentors and role models that enable others to do the same, we all become better equipped to have fulfilling relationships.

The important thing to keep in mind is that knowing what resources are available and how they are structured, is foundational to growing and maturing within an organization or any structure of people. So, let’s keep up with what’s in our box.

  • Episode 6–496: Box Series – Checking the Boxes

    Let’s talk about Checklists

It’s that time of the year to take inventory of the past year and

to plan for the future year. Checklists can help up to identify things that have been completed and things that we plan to do in the future.

Sometimes the checklists we use are necessary for us to ensure we have reviewed a list of items necessary for us to proceed confidently, such as an airplane pilot’s pre-flight inspection. Other times the checklists we create are more goal oriented.

When we make plans for the future, it is important that there be

purpose and passion behind our goals. Purpose and passion will fuel our drive to reach our goals.  In order for us to have purpose and passion, we need to understand what we value.  Knowing what we value will help us to create goals and milestones that align with our values. We also need to understand  our past successes and shortcomings. So that we can work in our strength(s). It is also important to be realistic about the goals we set and the number of goals we set.  Goals can be ambitious, and challenging, and can still be realistic and obtainable. Creating a list for the steps and milestones to reach your goal can be a great tool to help with forward momentum.

And finally a word of caution, be careful of checking the boxes only to go along with the crowd or the social agenda of the moment. If there is no commitment or understanding behind what you are doing, the energy you are expending is likely a waste and can undermine your positive impact, influence, and success.

Develop a checklist and/or a routine, that aligns with your personal and professional success.

When we connect with our purpose and passion, and live a lifestyle that is in alignment with our purpose and passion, and we’ll be checking the boxes of life that matter.

    Episode 6 – 495: Box Series – Gift

Let’s talk about Giving and Receiving Gifts

Merry Christmas!  Today is a day that many people around the

world exchange gifts, and in the Christian faith many use this day to acknowledge the birth of Jesus Christ. So today I wanted to focus on the idea of giving and receiving gifts.

In our personal and business lives we have the opportunity to give to others and receive from others.  When we truly understand the capacity we have to be of service to others, we can see it as the awesome responsibility that it is.  We have the capacity to build others up, to speak and share confidence.  Sometimes

we can see abilities and possibilities in others that they can not see in themselves.  Helping others to understand their gifts and how those gifts can be used, can be powerful in helping people to
unleash the full power of their gifts. Think back on a time that someone has encouraged you to take a chance or to keep at something hard.  That encouragement was a gift given to you.

Likewise, we have the capacity to receive gifts from others.  And like physically packaged gifts, the gifts we receive can come in different sizes, some can be used immediately, and some require practice and skill to handle effectively.

Sometimes gift come in the form of opportunities to expand our responsibilities or to take on new responsibilities.
Sometimes gifts of experience and learning may be disguised in hard work, that expands our abilities, and capacity. We can sometimes discount or disregard the gifts given to us or fully reject a gift. Sometimes, our sense of humility or our limited sense of self, can get in the way of receiving the gifts available to us.  However, we can change perspective to view opportunities, information, and encouragement as gifts for our good to be received, which will help us and others realize greater potential.

In all of this, the important thing is that the gift be opened and utilized.  If we do not acknowledge or accept the gifts we have available to us, they are of no value.  So today, be encouraged to

know that life if full of opportunities to give and receive gifts that can help us to think, learn, grow, and live more fulfilled lives and it is up to us to acknowledge those gifts and to help others to do the same.

  • Episode 6 – 493: Relationship Progression and Change

Episode 6 – 493: Relationship Progression and Change

Let’s talk about the life cycle of relationships.   In our working relationships there are shifts and changes also.  We can grow and mature to being knowledgeable and experienced to a degree that allows us to see breakthrough and new discoveries and to support the growth of others. As we grow and mature, what we benefit from in a relationship will necessarily change.

When our ability to contribute to a relationship and our needs in

relationship change, the relationship must also grow and change to remain relevant and beneficial OR we will need to seek to use our skills, abilities, and knowledge in other relationships or activities.
Think of a student who wants to be a scientist.  Initially, that student must learn the basics of their specific scientific field of study and then they must apply their knowledge. Practice and experience will provide new levels of confidence and knowledge
that may eclipse the student teacher relationship.  The person that was once in a teacher role, may become an advisor, mentor, or colleague which meets different needs than the student-teacher relationship. Likewise, the former student may become the teacher.

In the professional work setting, we also have the ability to experience growth.  We must be mindful that the types of relationships that helped us get to a new level of opportunity and success, may run their useful lifecycle and the relationship may require re-evaluation and restructuring.  Sometimes we seem to mature in our relationships almost instinctively and we assume greater scopes of responsibility or new roles.  Other times

there may seem to be limitations in future opportunity within a relationship, that requires greater change.  Some relationships are seasonal, some are situational, and some are life-long. All
relationships have a lifecycle and we must pay attention to understand our role in relationship.

If we are being truthful to ourselves and others, we can

appreciate that the lifecycles of relationship symbolize growth and growth requires change.  Think about your relationships,
and define how you serve in those relationships, how you are served, and how you can help others. This will help you to be honest with yourself regarding the lifecycle of your relationships and action you can take to ensure your relationships remain relevant.

  • Episode 6 – 492: Relationships Differences

    Episode 6 – 492: Relationships Differences

    Let’s talk about overcoming differences

One of these things is not like the other, one of these things

just isn’t the same – and so it doesn’t belong – or does it? We naturally defer to patterns and notice differences, however differences of themselves don’t diminish value. Different from the majority or the status quo isn’t necessarily a thing to be avoided as much as it might be a thing to be understood.

Sometimes we allow our perception of differences or things that

are unfamiliar to us become barriers to understanding and building relationship
versus taking time to understand or even see the things that we do have in common.  I am reminded of two people that want the
same outcome, but have different perspectives and approaches as they lean on their own understanding and interpretations instead of attempting to look at things from varied perspectives. In this example their resistance to intentionally seeking to
understand an alternative perspective creates a barrier that prevents forward momentum.  Imagine if the two were to
seek out common ground or shared understanding and use that as a basis to move forward. Doing this would allow them to bypass what they currently view as a barrier to progress.

Our reality is that we are always learning and changing whether it

is done intentionally or not. So having a mindset for progress is important.
Even when we find common ground or understanding as a basis for a path forward, this does not mean that we will agree on everything, but it does allow  us to make as much progress as possible in a respectful manner. There may come a point when we decide the relationship may not be what we had hoped or what we might like, and that decision will be based on understanding instead of speculation that might be false.

So my encouragement today is for each one of us to be careful not to let our preconceptions and assumptions get in the way of understanding and our ability to form positively impactful relationships with others. Differences can be appreciated and bring strength in diversity. Let’s seek to understand one another and interact with respect.
