  • The Bride Of Frankenstein (1935)
The more we look back on early Hollywood, the more certain we are in declaring that MOVIES ARE GAY. Movies Are Gay not just in June but 24 seven, 352 days a year. Cultural repression of adult sexuality is a terrible thing but sometimes we can look back with modernity on our side and realize what many likely missed when they first watched Boris Karloff and Elsa Lanchester in James Wale’s 1935 sequel “Bride of Frankenstein”. What they might have missed was that this movie is very very gay and also very very fun. From the baddie bey, Doctor Septimus Pretorius to The Bride who rejects her arranged union, this movie has a lot of subtext. At least that’s what we projected onto it. Shout out to Minnie, the goofball baddie and Valerie Hobson, the 28 year old 17 year old. We belong dead.

  • Tangerine (2015)
Don’t think just because Sean Baker did some shit with three iPhone 5s and Final Cut that you can just whip out your phone and make something this good because you can’t. Maybe some of you could, but most of you? No way. MOVIES ARE GAY this month and we keep on truckin’ with a crafty and clever tale of two transgender sex workers on the streets of West Los Angeles. Hilarious and human, movies don’t often feel this real. Nor should they for the most part, but when they do feel real it can be rewarding. Of course we’re talking about Sean Baker’s 2015 film “Tangerine” starring Katana Kiki Rodriguez, Mya Taylor and Karren Karagulian. Check this shit out if you haven’t, it’s genuinely funny and don’t fall in love with your pimp for God’s sake.

  • Silver Linings Playbook (2012)
It’s time for our MOVIE ROULETTE REVIEW and last time we hit on an offbeat romance category and, from there, randomly selected David O. Russell”s 2012 romantic comedy “Silver Linings Playbook” starring Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro & Jacki Weaver. This also happens to be our very first movie discussion of a flick that was produced by The Weinstein Company (we think) and boy will Jennifer Lawrence never fully shake name-dropping Harvey Weinstein in award show speeches. It wasn’t just her though. Many stars did over the years, she was just more recent. That guy will die in prison. This movie is pretty good though. We select our next Movie Roulette selection at the end of the episode.

  • Mädchen In Uniform (1931)
It’s time to get historical up in this piece because MOVIES ARE GAY this month and we got some early lesbian erotica on film and it comes from 1930s Germany of all places. It also features our earliest feature film discussion directed by a woman. We’re talking about Leontine Sagan’s German film about love in a girls school and the authoritarian forces that loom over it. No wonder the Nazi’s banned it. The United States actually banned it before that. Manuela’s genuine glow from her love for the most beloved Headmistress in her school shined through a little too hard, perhaps. We’re talking about the 1931 pioneering classic, “Mädchen in Uniform” and it was about a half a century ahead of its time. A lot of the extras in this film likely didn’t make it through the Second World War. Many fled. There’s a link below where you can watch it so you better catch up on your MOVIES ARE GAY history!

  • My Own Private Idaho (1991)
We keep things going for this month’s MOVIES ARE GAY theme with a film that was a turning point in the popularity of modern queer cinema. We’re talking about Gus Van Sant’s 1991 classic “My Own Private Idaho” starring the late great River Phoenix and Keanu Reeves in one of his earliest acclaimed roles playing street hustlers. Mikey (River Phoenix) is desperately coping with the intense loss he has felt in his life and the trauma has left him narcoleptic. There’s some Shakespeare stuff her as well. Also, Mike’s brother, Roger, is definitely also his dad. We interpreted that scene differently and lightly debated it but it’s literally the fucked up thing they said. Damn. This movie is also very funny. I swear.

  • Bit (2019)
Movies are Gay all month long and today’s selection features a squad of lesbian vampires who recruit our transgender protagonist with the goal of obtaining power that they reserve only for the ladies. No vampirism for the dudes out there scaring the hoes. Nuh uh. Who suck the blood from the world? GIRLS! An…interesting flick but muddled in lore with an overarching theme you could come up with after one week of a gender studies class. We’re talking about Brad Michael Elmore’s modern vampire tale in the 2019 low budget LGBTQ horror, “Bit” starring Nicole Maines. How does it work? How DOESN’T it work? We got some opinions and we can’t help but scheme on how we might have approached such a movie. Hear us go on about it and stay with us and embrace the fact that MOVIES ARE GAY.

  • Rope (1948)
Finally, it’s time. This month…MOVIES ARE GAY! The layered world of queer cinema and its influences are the topic and we will start off with a classic. Alfred Hitchcock (That old, alleged, queen) made a film based on a play that was loosely based upon the Leopold and Loeb true crime case. The film, “Rope” was considered a “failed experiment” by the director but upon it’s re-release decades later, the world finally saw what many missed in the more closeted time in which it first released, THAT THIS MOVIE IS GAY. A common denominator on lists of classic, if subtle, gay cinema roots. “Rope” is a craftily shot and acted film with the main culprits, the screenwriter and supposedly Hitchcock himself all belonging in the classic realm of Hollywood LGBTQ. Truly, the more we learn about Hollywood, the gayer it gets. That’s because MOVIES ARE GAY. All of them.

  • Blackhat (2015)
During Michael Mann May we watched modern crime dramas from the past four decades and in 2015 Mann gave us a film about cyber crime and hacking which also happens to be his last movie released as of this writing. (Ferrari is not quite out yet) Chris Hemsworth is a hacker and a fighter and kind of a detective and more than anything he is a hacker and he and agents from the United States and China must work together to stop a mystery fellow from causing mass hack lord destruction. We’re talking about the 2015, globe hopping “hack” thriller “Blackhat” and your boy Thor is in it. Michael Mann has some moves but does his representation of cyber crime make it into rare company of good cyber crime movies? What is any other good hacking thriller, honestly? I can’t think of one. Johnny Mnemonic is too goofy. Michael Mann hacks into our mainframe one more time before we leave his month. Thanks for all the cool shit Mike. You’ve touched us deeply but now It’s time for a new theme. It’s time to be gay now.

  • Out Of The Past (1947)
By the end of the week we will be full blown gay but in the last days of May we will leave with some good classic crime, namely this Robert Mitchum bonafide classic film noir directed by Jacques Tourneur. The smooth and stunning “Out of the Past” starring Mitchum, the stunning Jane Greer and Kirk Douglas. All the noir classic tropes you can imagine but done in the best possible way. And how bout that deaf boy hooking that big one? He should be in fishing competitions. A harder movie to find but well worth your time and maybe a rental. We got this, one more Michael Mann movie, and then we will be gay.
