Documenteers: The Documentary Podcast episodes

  • Episode 60 - Love, Gilda
It's our first official episode of 2019 and it's one Bob and Akil have had in the bag for a while. We Watched Lisa Dapolito's "Love, Gilda" in theaters during the Nashville Jewish Film Festival for a one night screening done by the Festival with the help of Gilda's Club, a cancer support non-profit. Gilda Radner was a unique and influential comedic personality with a legendary career who left us waaaaay too soon. Let Bob and Akil tell you about her life story in this "In Theaters" edition. We actually have a lot in common with Gilda because we've also made out with Martin Short. Akil achieves a franchise record as he and Bob manage an episode less than an hour long. Akil was also very charmed to be in a theater surrounded by Jewish people. It's kind of adorable, actually. Mazel Tov. Keep on Doccin'®

  • Shorties 1: Balloonfest
Welcome to 2019, Doccalo! That's you. You're a Doccalo. If you weren't one before, then you are now. It's the beginnings of our second year and just for you we're gonna start dropping Friday episodes. Short episodes about short documentaries. We call them "Shorties". Stuart is excited to not have to work as hard as he and Bob Sham tackle a hard luck story about a hard luck incident in a hard luck town. We watched Cleveland's depressing, but humorous, attempt to garner respect by releasing balloons into the air in Nathan Truesdale's "Balloonfest". It's only six minutes long and you can watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n0CT8zrw6lw . We hope you get pumped about two Documenteers episodes per week. If you also happen to get hot for balloons then you've really scored with this episode. Keep on Doccin'®

  • A Gathering of the Doccalos
It’s that time of year when the current year withers away, and 2019 is birthed out from 2018’s vagina/butthole/mouth? Not only is it time for the new year, it also happens to be the 1st anniversary of The Documenteers! That means everybody comes together for A GATHERING OF THE DOCCALOS! All of your favorite Documenteers hosts (and a guest) come together in one house, are forced to consume a quarter of their weight in alcohol, and speak into a microphone under threat of death. We have a great time and everybody shows Bob Sham the utmost respect. This is a special episode and it ain’t about a documentary. It’s about the best subject of all. The greatest documentary themed podcast in the universe. We’re talking about us, silly! It was a delightful gathering and this description is being written beneath a hangover cloud.
We also drop some hot news about the future of the show, and one significant bit of news is the fact that WE NOW HAVE A WEBSITE. www.documenteerspodcast.com Go there for all things Documenteers! All the information on where to find us and how to support us is there. We plan on experimenting with some fun articles and content throughout the next year. For something that isn’t porn, you will find that our website is remarkably easy to masturbate to. Bookmark that shit and keep your peepers peeping on it. In the meantime, let us listen to this episode and celebrate with your favorite Documenteers on this Docuversary. Listen to all the things that everyone involved will regret later. Thanks for listening. Here’s to the next year of the Documenteers! Happy New Year! Keep on Doccin’®

  • Episode 59 - Fireplace For Your Home (All of Them)
Ho Ho Ho, Doccalos! We're so damn excited and merry to bring you this Christmas Day episode. Angela is especially excited because she's watched what she and Bob are going to discuss many many times. We're discussing every George Ford "Fireplace for Your Home" special available on Netflix. It's kind of not serious, but actually more serious than you might think. Is this a documentary? Of course it is. It's a documentation of wood. Burning wood. So bust out the nog. Get at least as drunk as we were in this episode. Let the kids be lost in their Christmas loot. Snuggle with your holiday honey and stare like zombies into your smart-phone while letting the Documenteers wind your Christmas down. You can actually watch these Fireplaces and listen to this episode AT THE SAME TIME. Merry Christmas. Happy Holidays. Apologies to Jesus. Keep on Doccin'®

  • Episode 58 - What Would Jesus Buy?
Christmas is creepin' and the Documenteers hit the seasonal theme in this week's episode as Jonni and Bob Sham tackle a holiday warning in Rob VanAlkemade's 2007 documentary about Reverend Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping. It's "What Would Jesus Buy?" and it's free to view on Reverend Billy's YouTube channel. Good to know you don't have to buy a movie about holiday consumerism. Nobody seems to think Reverend Billy is wrong, but how well is this message being communicated in this film? Will Bob stop his holiday bitching? Maybe next week. Let's go to the mall! Then we can get escorted out of the mall by armed security! Then we dry hump the shrubs at Wal-Mart headquarters! We apologize on behalf of good taste for songs used in this episode, but what the hell do you expect? It's a Christmas themed episode. Bob's just trolling himself, really. You get it, right? Right? • Episode 57 - Super Size Me
It had to happen. We've often mentioned "Spurlocking" here on the Documenteers and now we finally made ourselves see it in full effect. Happy Holidays by the way! Our early Christmas gift to you is that Bob Sham will do little to no complaining about Christmas in this episode. Unfortunately, he will complain about everything else. Stuart and Bob slide down the greasy fry-hole and watch the "technically classic" 2004 documentary "Super Size Me" by Morgan Spurlock. Stuart and Bob do the best they can to analyze this well-known film that everyone has seen without going off too much. (You should hear what was edited out. Maybe someday.) We promise that we wish no harm on anyone. Especially Morgan Spurlock. We swear. Peace and Love. Here's something fun he wrote. http://www.twitlonger.com/show/n_1sqc244 McDonalds is terrible for you. Duh. Bob likes the Big Macs. Those fries are ok but they gotta be hot. Stuart can crush a Burger King breakfast sandwich. Check out the jalapeno poppers at Arby's. Keep on Doccin'®.

  • Episode 56 - F for Fake with Tyler Mahan Coe
Just in time for Hannukah. Light your menorah, sip the manischewitz and relax to the smooth sounds of this special edition episode of the Documenteers. Another Nashville podcaster joins Bob Sham and he had the pick of the documentary litter. Tyler Mahan Coe steps into the Shamco studio. He's the host of the hit podcasts "Cocaine and Rhinestones" and "Your Favorite Band Sucks" with fellow host Mark Mosley. If for some reason you're listening to the Documenteers podcast without ever hearing of Tyler, then let me just say thank you for your time and love. Also, you should go check those shows out. "Cocaine and Rhinestones" is a very researched podcast about the history of country music. The best podcast of its kind. "Your Favorite Band Sucks" is about Tyler and Mark busting the beans of the most popular bands in pop culture. Some call the show brave. Others call it dangerous. Tyler joins Bob in discussing the most fraudulent "documentary" of all time. Some say it isn't a documentary at all. It's Orson Welles's final, and most fun, film "F for Fake". The film was also co-directed and produced by the grinning Francois Reichenbach. This tale of fakery is choking in charlatanism. Where is the truth? Who is honest? The art forger? The writer? The lady with all the bikinis? Where does Orson get those wonderful clothes? Let's peel the onion. A great film to watch if you're overdosing on documentaries. Special appearance by Fred Durst. • Episode 55 - Tree Man
December is finally here and that means Bob can't talk about the War on Thanksgiving anymore. Well, maybe a little. 'Tis officially the season on the Documenteers and we dive into our first ever Christmas themed episode. Francois comes from Quebec and he represents a holiday tradition of Canadians selling Christmas trees on the streets of New York City. Unfortunately he leaves his family in Quebec for over a month, but over the years Francois has acquired a secondary family of people with real struggles and real heart. Bob Sham and Ginger watched Brad Rothschild and Jon Reiner's "Tree Man" on Netflix, and they're gonna tell you all about it. Co-host Ginger gets nostalgic as a former resident of NYC and Bob struggles to maintain his Grinchery in the face of real human moments. You win this time, Christmas. You piece of shit. • Episode 54 - Free Solo
You better get free for Episode 54. Free Solo that is. I apologize for those first two sentences. The 30 for 30s won't return until early next year, but in this episode Bob Sham and Drew talk about one of the most dangerous sports out there. Drew and Bob went to the local theater to watch Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin's new documentary "Free Solo". Alex Honnold may not emote very much, but he climbs like Spider-Man. His big dream is to free solo climb the face of El Capitan in Yosemite. Free Solo means no ropes, no buddies, no safety equipment. No one has scaled this rock without safety equipment, and to pro climbers it's scary as hell. Will Alex accomplish this extreme physical test, or will he fall to his death in the worst North Face commercial ever? Drew and Bob take us through all the tension. Check to see if this flick is available at your local independent movie theater. Kick rocks and Keep on Doccin'®.

  • Episode 53 - The Pilgrims
Give thanks, Doccalo. We actually have a Thanksgiving themed documentary to talk about! Bob and Angela discuss a PBS feature on the history of our most tight-assed of European Colonists. The Puritans. The Separatists. The Immigrants. "The Pilgrims" by Ric Burns. This "American Experience" special is available online at various cuts and lengths. It's the story of William Bradford and a bunch of folk that really weren't good at anything but praying and barely surviving. The story of the Pilgrims and the first Thanksgiving funneled through the filter of the Documenteers. It's the best version, really. Thanksgiving is Bob's favorite holiday. It's a lonely position to take. Bob would gladly fight Christmas in the streets for the honor of Thanksgiving. He would get his ass kicked horribly, but he would try. Just another casualty of the War on Thanksgiving. Get stuffed and Keep on Doccin®.
