In the 1860s, Boston photographer William Mumler took a self portrait that would change his life. In the photo, above his shoulder, was the translucent image of a woman. She appeared to be made of light, and upon further inspection, Mumler believed the image to be that of his cousin, who had died twelve years earlier.

Whether he meant to or not, Mumler stumbled on the first ever instance of “spirit photography”.
