Does Georgia Or Alabama Football Have More To Lose In Week 5?

Listen Later

Chase Robinson and Chris Lee examine who has more at stake in Georgia’s trip to Alabama on Saturday, both for this season and beyond. Topics include:

The ramifications of each team’s schedule ahead:

ALABAMA

Alabama will be favored in every game after this except maybe one (at Tennessee), which looks like a virtual toss-up as of late-September.

Missouri looms, but the Tigers may not be as tough as we thought a few weeks ago.

Don’t completely discount South Carolina, Auburn, LSU and Oklahoma as teams that could play with Alabama, but Alabama looks like a big favorite in all those.

So, Alabama can lose to Georgia and 10-2 still seems most likely. And it’s hard to imagine that not getting Alabama in the playoff.

GEORGIA

The schedule-makers did Georgia no favors.

The Bulldogs have murderous road trips to Texas and Ole Miss and it’s possible they may be a small underdog in each.

Georgia will likely be a single-digit favorite over a tough Tennessee team, with that game being in Athens.

Rivalry games with Auburn and Georgia Tech remain.

But lose to Alabama and 9-3 is a real possibility. Could the Bulldogs make the playoff with that record, especially with a win already banked over Clemson?

PROGRAM PERCEPTION/RECRUITING

Things are rarely as good or bad as they seem, but in the SEC, judgments are made fairly or unfairly with every game even if they’re out of line with reality.

So here are the best and worst-case scenarios for each program.

ALABAMA

It’s been a wait-and-see since Nick Saban retired. Kalen DeBoer looked/looks like a fantastic hire but comparisons will always be made to his predecessor.

Win this one, and it feels as if Alabama’s got a claim in regaining its position as college football’s top program, especially with DeBoer winning some key recruiting battles.

A struggling Auburn could also aid Alabama in recruiting.

GEORGIA

Georgia didn’t make the Playoff last year (even if it deserved to be in). Not making it this year would beg some questions about the program’s positioning.

But win this one, and Georgia still would be considered college football’s premier program.
