Courtney Burns works as the Middle School Director of Guidance, and 7th and 8th grade Counselor, at Faith Lutheran Middle School & High School in Las Vegas. After the school went through a traumatic experience at the time of the One October Las Vegas shooting, as well as other struggles, Courtney worked to bring in Esther - a comfort or therapy dog who has since helped the school, both the students and faculty, get through tough times and into a happier daily flow. And instead of the school owning Esther, she is instead Courtney’s personal dog - which has led them to having a closer connection with an interesting balance between working together and playing together.

Isaac Mizrahi is a fashion designer, author, and entertainer who’s best known for his work in the fashion world with his own brands. While he had a dog at a young age, it was really the first dog he got as an adult that made a significant impact on him. That dog was Harry, his hairy soulmate, who turned into his constant companion and rock. He even met his husband, Arnold, while on a walk with Harry in New York City - where the two are now based with their dogs of Dean and Kitty. Recently, Isaac also put out a memoir called I.M. about his life, including stories of how his dogs have played a role in his path.

Chrissy Beckles is the Founder and President of The Sato Project, which helps rescue abused and abandoned dogs from Puerto Rico. It all started when her husband was working there over a decade ago and she saw all the stray dogs. While most people would feel bad but not have the initiative to take action, Chrissy became more and more involved – especially after getting her own rescue, Boom Boom – and started The Sato Project. Eventually, she quit her job and took on saving Puerto Rico’s stray dogs full time. Boom Boom, the dog of the logo of her organization, gave her the motivation and inspiration to go down this new path.

After helping take care of the dog of her boss, at the time, she realized she could handle the responsibility of having a dog. Not too long after, Samantha and her partner decided to begin fostering and Samantha found a passion in this avenue. Eventually, that fostering also turned into adopting some dogs, too, and they’ve now formed their own little pack together. This has also helped take their relationship, as a couple and as a family, to another level that otherwise wouldn’t be prevalent.

FREEDOM RIDE is a new series of minisodes on Dog Save The People that focuses on guests telling their own inspiring, rescue-based tales. In this first episode, Susan Weidel talks about how she adopted Little Red, one of the dogs rescued from former NFL Quarterback Michael Vick’s notorious dog fighting operation. Susan gave Little Red a new life but it took time, patience and love. Little Red found a new home with Susan in Wyoming and New Mexico with a welcoming pack of dogs and she was able to live in a new way, and become a dog again - running free in a wide open pasture. She also amassed a large following online and became a learning symbol to others of a dog making it out of a difficult rescue situation like this and into a brighter path.
Rebecca Ascher-Walsh is a freelance writer who has written several dog books that have been published by National Geographic. She has two dogs of her own, Joe and Buddy, and lives in New York City with her family. Her two kids now love the dogs, too, and their older dog (Buddy) has acted like a nanny to the children. The dogs have also helped to connect her with other people she may not have met otherwise, including during her morning routine around other dog walkers in Central Park. Additionally, Rebecca is the founder and director of The Deja Foundation, which helps provide direct assistance for getting care, training, recovery, and rehabilitation for rescue dogs.
