  • Connecting Scientific Studies on Dog Cognition to that of Common Dog Behavior Problems and the Best Method to Address Unwanted Dog Behavior.

    Billie uses 4 scientific studies on dog cognition to explain why we need a method grounded in cognitive behavioral therapy to address a common unwanted behavior in dogs over 6 months.

    In this episode we explore four cognitive abilities by introducing the studies which prove dogs have these abilities. I discuss how these abilities, although considered positive, can cause common unwanted behaviors and why suppressing these skills can increase the unwanted behavior.

    Memory,  Emotions, Object Permanence, Object Differentiation, Dexterity, and the ability to understand that an action has a result are some of the recent trends in scientific studies.  If dogs can think cognitively, and their behaviors, whether considered "good" or "bad" (wanted or unwanted) are a result of these skills, we need to harness these skills to understand these behaviors. By remaining under the Operant Conditioning umbrella (positive reinforcement and balanced training), we simply cannot harness their cognitive abilities, which explains why addressing these behaviors is often challenging or impossible.

    NOTE:  At the time of recording this episode, I did not discuss counter conditioning as a method to address unwanted behaviors. There are other episodes which discuss counter conditioning and why it is limiting or ineffective in addressing behaviors.

  • Diving Deep into a Scientific Study on Adolescent Dog Behavior. Perhaps the methods we use perpetuate the behaviors associated with adolescence.


    Welcome to the first episode of 2021 where we dissect a scientific study which, although valid and adhering to professional standards, begs the question as to whether the exercise,  grounded in positive reinforcement training used to determine the results,  is a factor in creating the change in behaviors commonly associated with the adolescent stage.

    In other words: are the methods we use to solve the problems actually causing the problems?

  • Scientific studies and experts validate the need for a formula grounded in C.B.T. for dogs. I talk about the future of UPWARD Dogology.

    Welcome to the final episode of 2020, where I give a short description on my developments with professionals in the early part of 2020 and then moved onto researching and pursuing ways to spread awareness of CBT for dogs by making connections with all kinds of interesting people and professionals.

    I talk about the surge of scientific studies in dog behavior and provide an example of how a common study on object permanence validates UPWARD Dogology.  I then talk briefly about the study by Dr. Naomi Harvey on adolescent dogs, and provide a challenge for the listeners.

    2021 will be all about spreading awareness in the effort to make UPWARD Dogology mainstream. Thank you for all your support.

  • A chat with Dr. Adam Christman, DVM, author, speaker and advocate discusses shelter meds, animal legislation and dog rescue. SnipPet: The importance of delivery combined with content to engage listeners and make an impact.

    Adam is the Chief Veterinary Officer at MJH Life Sciences and oversees the veterinary division that includes Fetch, dvm360,  Firstline and VettED.   He advocates for pet parents and animals and is passionate about spreading awareness on many topics so we decided to loosely focus on shelter vet care, but as what often happens , we talked about a number of interesting topics , including foster care and rescue organizations around the world, legislation protecting animal welfare and why having 4 little dogs is a great way to keep warm in the winter!   I follow our chat with a talk on how expertise and confidence allow for more creative , fun,  diversified  and  ultimately more effective ways of education and advising.

  • Jessica Heaton has worked and volunteered with disabled dogs in Morocco and England and is the author of Pups Paws on Wheels. SnipPet: How scientific studies and hands-on application work together to increase our understanding of CBT for dogs.

    We are excited to introduce Jessica Heaton, who shares with us her experience volunteering in Morocco for a remote rescue organization that specializes in rehabilitating dogs with disabilities. Jessica's knowledge of dogs and her professional and volunteer work with dogs with disabilities inspired her to create a children's book for people of all ages, to spread awareness on the abilities of dogs with disabilities. She donates a portion of her sales back to the dogs in the rescue who "gave" so much to her.

    Dominance is a buzzword, and often controversial topic, in the dog world.   • Can upbringing/puppyhood effect the behavior and personality of a dog? Why are 100,000 dogs killed in Spain each year?

    Are behavioral issues unique to geographical locations?  level of abuse? lifestyle during puppyhood?  How do these effect the personality or needs of a dog? Perhaps all of these have an effect, but what is most important are the way the dog thinks and processes based on experiences, which are not as unique to geographical location and/or breed as one may think. How a dog is  forced to think and how he perceives his surroundings effects his behaviours.  Sound obvious?  You think it would be more obvious that it appears to be. 

    Did you know every year 100,000 dogs are murdered in Spain? Mary,  of Extraordinary Galgos and Podencos, Atlantic Chapter, is passionate about spreading awareness to help dogs, and she does not sugar-coat it!  Join us for our chat with Mary who knows first hand the effects of upbringing on behaviours and personalities of dogs. She shares her knowledge of Greyhounds, Galgos, and Podencos and the situation that is going on in Spain.

    Season 5 is a "Dogology" (kinda like a mixology) of tips, Q and A's, interviews, discussions and a deeper look into the 3 components of UPWARD Dogology all with the goal of increasing awareness and making the world a better place for all animals, including humans! Season 4 is interviews with people and organizations that help animals. Increase your awareness and be part of the solution by listening, sharing, and reviewing.  Season 3 dives deep into trending methods. Are they right for you and your dog? Season 2 shares the learning journey of my clients with dogs with different issues and backgrounds; always interesting and a great way to feel a connections with others who have similar experiences.  Season 1 starts by sharing my unique learning journey and then dives into why positive reinforcement training (and practices under that "umbrellas") are often limiting, ineffective and/or counter-productive with dogs over 6 months. It finishes with an introduction into cognitive behavioural therapy and UPWARD Dogology.

    We explore the role of women and our reaction when the behaviour of the dog is causing disruption to the family dynamics.
