- Nikki, vet. tech and creator of The Canine Health Nut, is passionate about sharing health and nutritional information that really matters. Lose the generic info and find the facts! Speaking of "generic advice", beware of "coffee shop" behavioral advice.
Nikki is not only a certified veterinarian technician, but also a research nut - especially when it comes to canine health and nutrition. She is chalk full of cool advice (the "who knew?" kind of tips and info). She digs deep in her research and talks with vets and canine nutritionists and then puts it all into an easy to understand "nutshell". There is so much info, especially generic information, on social media it is easy to get misinformed and lead down the wrong path. The Canine Health Nut is here to help guide you in the right direction.
As Nikki suggests for health related advice, behavioural advice provided on social media or through "coffee shop conversation" (because "everyone is a dog expert") may not be wrong, but it may not be correlative to your issues or needs, or the personality of your dog. Examples are provided to help you weed through the crap and focus on your goals.
Season 5 is a "Dogology" (kinda like a mixology) of tips, Q and A's, interviews, discussions and a deeper look into the 3 components of UPWARD Dogology all with the goal of increasing awareness and making the world a better place for all animals, including humans! Season 4 is interviews with people and organizations that help animals. Increase your awareness and be part of the solution by listening, sharing, and reviewing. Season 3 dives deep into trending methods. Are they right for you and your dog? Season 2 shares the learning journey of my clients with dogs with different issues and backgrounds; always interesting and a great way to feel a connections with others who have similar experiences. Season 1 starts by sharing my unique learning journey and then dives into why positive reinforcement training (and practices under that "umbrellas") are often limiting, ineffective and/or counter-productive with dogs over 6 months. It finishes with an introduction into cognitive behavioural therapy and UPWARD Dogology.

The Art of Urban People With Adopted and Rescued Dogs Methodology: Rescued Dogs: The Misunderstood Breed: Groom, Billie: 9781525547287: Books - Amazon.ca41 min - Furry Hobos N Hiway Heros with Canadian Trucking Magazine have saved the lives of hundreds of animals and what it takes to do this. SnipPet Piece - Keeping "four-on-the-floor", as suggested by truckers.
Season 4 introduces us to people who volunteer and work with dogs in a variety of ways. Billie hosts these eye-opening and entertaining Q and A, conversational style interviews with her co-host, David L. Helsel, rescuer and volunteer. Each interview is followed by a SnipPet piece on a dog related topic relevant to the interview.
In this episode, we interview Furry Hobos N Hiway Heros, a non-profit organization founded by Margaret Foster-Hyde, that organizes the transport of animals across North America to their new homes! 100% volunteer run, the truckers get as much out of these transports as the pets do. The effort, planning and passion that goes into these transports is well worth it.
Listen in on the three way conversation where we have an off-the-cuff chat with Maggie, a seasoned trucker and youngest member of Furry Hobos N Hiway Heros, and Dave Mackenzie, editor and publisher of Canadian Trucking Magazine (CTM) and long-time supporter of Margaret and her efforts. You don't want to miss this one!
The SnipPet Tip is, appropriately on why truckers are more logical than trainers when it comes to advising on how to keep your dog calm, especially in places such as a vehicle.

Why the change? SnipPet-How to "elevate" yourself as a trainer or behaviourist
Karen Grange is full of surprising and thought provoking info for anyone wanting to start or volunteer with a dog rescue. Is it all it is cut out to be? Well, that depends on your expectations and your perception of people!
The SnipPet is back by popular demand - a short piece on a random topic (commonly associated with the interview).
In this episode, the SnipPet discusses the benefits of teaching people how to work with their dogs. Board-n-train, classroom style, or even 1-on-1 without a 2 way conversation (due to the trainer's inability to adapt to individual clients and dogs), can be limiting for both the trainer/behaviourist and their client. Learn why working with fosters and rescuers forces trainers and behaviourists to elevate their skill set.

Followed by a ChinWag on the Benefits of Communicating and Bonding with our Dogs.
In this episode we get back to grassroots of why we love dogs - they heal us, ground us and bring out the best in us. We are relaxed and can be ourselves around them. We have the expert on meditating with dogs as our guest. In fact, James Jacobson wrote the book on it!
"I have been interviewed on CNN, appeared on The Tonight Show, and have been written about in national newspapers such as The Washington Post and The Los Angeles Times. I have been a guest on hundreds of television shows, local and nationally syndicated radio programs and podcasts. In addition, I have been on the other side of the microphone as a host and producer for news/talk radio stations. I have been in this field for a while. (When I was just 15, I hosted a weekly teen call-in talk show in Washington, DC.)" James Jacobson
James is also the author of How To Meditate With Your Dog", which landed him a guest appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show and jumpstarted his success as an author of multiple books. He his the host of The Dog Podcast Network and is a wealth of knowledge on issues relating to cancer in dogs.
This episode is packed with interesting and informative conversations. And it finishes up with a short, yet thought provoking, look into the need to bring holistic approaches, communication and bond back into our relationships with our companion animals.

The Art of Urban People With Adopted and Rescued Dogs Methodology: Rescued Dogs: The Misunderstood Breed: Groom, Billie: 9781525547287: Books - Amazon.ca21 min - A Scientific Study on Changes Needed in the Adoption Process. Is the Need to Ensure Successful Adoptions Over-Complicating the Process?
In this episode, I refer to a scientific study conducted by The Dog Rehoming Project, on the need for rescue organizations to focus on the post adoption process. Is the excessive pre-adoption form an indication of the number of returns, and is this excessive form the solution?
Rescue orgs and dog experts are promoting a change in mindset that focuses on patience and compassion, yet can these philosophies be unintentionally placing unjustified blame on the adopters?
I then dive into how suggestions made with the best of intentions are clear indications of the challenges faced when adopting a dog or working with dogs to address behaviors.
Why are Avoidance, Distraction and "Simply Managing Your Dog's Fear" acceptable training advice, and are dog owners satisfied with these limited options?
Is a Decompression Period necessary for all dogs? A unnecessary decompression period can backfire, causing some dogs to rebel, or feel uncomfortable.
To effectively integrate dogs into our homes, we need transferable skills that start during the pre-adoption process. Learn more about transferable skills and the benefits of Canine CBT.

In this episode, I talk about the reliance on gadgets to address behaviors and problems. These gadgets are not necessarily aversive or harmful, such as a slow-feed bowl, but are they preventing a holistic approach, communication and bonding?
Some gadgets are aversive, yet are considered non-aversive simply because of the way they are marketed., such as the no-bark collar. How are these tools harming dogs and our ability to proactively prevent issues and address the root of the behaviors?
When these gadgets gather in the closet, and the behaviors are still present, this can lead to increased rules and restrictions, which can also decrease bond and the ability to easily integrate dogs into our lifestyle.
This episode, as all episodes, provides thought provoking information to allow you to make the best decision for your dog and your family.

Billie openly shares her experiences and knowledge, in a straight-forward and often humorous manner, acquired over three decades working with dogs, rescuers, fosters, adopters, and industry experts. She describes how dogs think, learn, process, and absorb our urban world, compared to that of puppies, and explains, without judgement, the inherent limitations of conventional training methods. Billie uses the most interesting and "relatable" examples to explain Canine Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CCBT) and how it is changing the landscape of canine behavioral rehabilitation and animal welfare on a local and global scale.
