UPWARD Dogology episodes contain a “Journey” and a “SnipPet”  The Journey describes the process, challenges and successes with a client and their dog. The SnipPet Pieces are tidbits of info, tips, “what’s trending”, opinions and advice from experts on anything and everything dog related.

In this Learning Journey, Billie introduces us to Jane with her dog Buttons. Jane adopted Buttons as a mature dog from a breeder and she is having problems house-training Buttons. Jane learns how cognitive behavioral therapy changes Button's perception and, in turn, addresses the messing.

The SnipPet Piece takes a look at The Fear Free Certification recommended for veterinarian clinics. This movement has effectively decreased negative methods by spreading awareness on the importance of positive methods, but has this left room for other effective, non-aversive methods?

Welcome to the revamped Season 1 (as of Sept, 2021)

In this final episode of Season 1, we explore the 10 principles of Cognitive Therapy. Why is this important? Well, in doing so, we learn how UPWARD Dogology incorporates approaches and principles that scientists and animal experts are recognizing as necessary components for securing a positive relationship with our canine companions.  ( ie - communication, bonding, pro-active prevention, teaching expected behavior, building a platform, calm guidance, recognizing emotions and harnessing cognitive skills)

Cognitive Studies on canines performed by scientists prove dogs can think cognitively. We need to harness these skills to effectively "work with" dogs, especially adolescent dogs and ones with checkered or unconventional upbringings.  Learn what cognitive skills are and why how those effect your dog's behavior on a daily basis.

Dog experts are making strides in incorporating methods, principles and approaches that non-aversively harness cognitive skills and respect the emotional intelligence of dogs. Is this possible while only adhering to methods grounded in Conditioning Methodologies?

To decrease euthanasia and surrenders, we need a methodology that addresses aggression and anxiety to a greater degree than the ones currently presented in mainstream dog training.  Change is urgently needed. Be a part of the solution.

Welcome to episode 2 of the revamped season 1 (as of Sept, 2021) 

In this episode, I  share thought provoking information and stories to "retrain your brain", so you can easily absorb the information on UPWARD Dogology in the following episodes.

Mainstream dog training currently consists of methods adhering to Conventional Methodologies.  These methods are effective and many dogs can go through their entire life with the guidance provided by Conditioning Methods. But for many dogs these methods can fall short after puppyhood.  This is not the fault of the owner or trainer, or, of course, the dog! 

This episode talks about how industry experts have effectively (and thankfully) diminished the popularity of negative methods and techniques, yet also recognize the need for a methodology that is non-aversive and effective with dogs over 6 months, and in particular, ones with a checkered or unconventional past. To start this process, it is necessary to open our minds to learning.
