What Would Jeff Do? Dog Training Tip of the Day #160

I was driving home from Target with Angelo today and he asked

"Papa, are superheroes real?"

I thought for a while before I answered and I said "yes they are, but not the ones you see in cartoons or in your video games"

I told him that he could be a superhero, and he told me "but Papa, I need a super power"

I told him that being a nice and helpful person is a superpower.

He thought for a minute and then said "I wish I could go around the world in a few seconds though"

I told him he could with the internet and if he made helpful videos on Youtube that he could travel around the world in seconds.

we talked for a while about helping, caring and motivating others and how powerful of a superpower that is.

He thought it was a great idea and that was a wonderful power to have.

We all can be superheros, it has nothing to do with your birth, your upbringing, we all have the capability to be one.

So many folks are struggling out there with life, with work, with relationships.

Lots of folks are also doing a lot of blaming, blaming others for their situation and lots of victim mindset going on.

Lots of folks living in the middle of a toxic environment.

I would love to see as many folks try something for 1 year.

Start changing by changing some things around you. Some are small and some are a little bigger, some you will find to be easy, and some will seem just not possible.

Why do I always talk about punishment in my videos?

Lots of folks don't seem to want to or they don't know how to.

It seems to be a big taboo to talk about, unfortuntally it is also the most important part of dog training when it comes to stopping unwanted behaviors.

Most of the questions I get are all about "how do I stop.......and then fill in the blank. The only way to to stop an unwanted behavior is through punishment.

The thing is that most folks do not know how to properly punish a dog and that is where the teaching comes in.

What Would Jeff Do? Dog Training Tip of the DAy #152

Do you have minimum wage level dog training and owning skills?

Make sure you don't get a dog that is above your skill set/pay grade or you will most likely struggle.

When getting a minimum wage job (which I am a big fan of) you learn how to work in the workforce, how to take direction, be part of a team, how to interact with the public, how to follow rules and usually your need to come to work clean and neat, you learn how to start and finish a task and so much more, there is huge value in that. Keep in mind it is just a stepping stone though, you eventually will want to move up the workforce ladder and get a job that takes more skill set, but the lesson you learned from your minimum wage job still apply most of the time.

Its the same with getting a dog, I am seeing lots of folks getting a dog that they will need to have MBA experience to raise, train and handle, but they still only have minimum wage work skills.

This is going to have some folks concerned and most likely turned off a little to a lot, but I say this because it is keeping families from being stuck, from using most likely false theories and stories and usually lots of lies from the rescue industry as well from so many other parts of the pet dog industry.

My dog was abused, my dog was from a hoarding situation, my dog was beaten from his past owner who was a man, my dog was found on the street wandering around for the last 2 years, my dog was pulled from a fighting ring, my dog was locked in a crate 20 hours a day, and more and more stories that are emotional laden and repeated over and over.

First of all, how does someone know? Where you told by a rescue or shelter? it was most likely a lie, it is quite common for them to make up stories to get dogs adopted out, that is a well known practice, to raise funds and get dogs adopted out is to lie about the dogs past. A lot of folks just assume.

I travel the world doing hands on seminars with dogs and owners, I also do daily skypes with folks around the world and over and over again, all of the owners at some point have heard the same cut/paste paragraph that at one point they may have believed and is being shared by vets, behaviorists, bloggers, dog trainers, internet warriors and anyone else that is against the concept of saying NO to a dog.

It pretty much goes like this

You should never say NO to your dog, you should never correct your dog for a bad behavior, you should never use any form of punishment with your dog, or..........you will destroy your dog, you will ruin the relationship with your dog, you will create a fearful, anxious, nervous and also aggressive dog. Then some wordage about science based and studies and all this other stuff, it literally is word for word the same cut/paste stuff every time.

Well it is a lie, it is false, it is not true.
