  • Smart Money Moves

After the train wreck that was 2020, you may well question whether it’s worth trying to plan anything. But knocking off a few financial tasks early in the year can better prepare you for whatever 2021 has in store.

Who knows what 2021 will bring? Will a nationwide vaccination campaign bring the COVID-19 pandemic under control? How much will the economy rebound? Will our elected governmental leaders put aside partisan differences and get the nation back on track?

There’s plenty, obviously, that’s out of our control. But you can control your money — how you spend, how you save, how you invest.

  • Best Ingredients To Hydrate Your Face

One of the easiest ways to get glowing, healthy-looking skin is to make sure your skin is effectively moisturized. But doing so—and finding the right product to do this—is a little more complicated than it seems.

Know that there is a difference between moisturizing and hydrating ingredients.

The right combination of hydrating and moisturizing ingredients for your skin will depend on your skin type and the concerns you’re trying to address. Skin that tends to be dry will likely need both hydrating and moisturizing ingredients, whereas with oily skin, more occlusive moisturizing ingredients may cause breakouts.

  • 11 Ways to Stop Fraud in 2021

Take these steps to keep safe from scams, identity theft and spam calls.

Improve your password protection - Many online retailers, financial companies and service providers offer “dual-factor authentication.”

Protect your mail - Informed Delivery is a free service from the U.S. Postal Service in which the agency sends, via email, images of letter-sized mail expected to be delivered to you soon.

Check your credit report - Because of the pandemic, all three major credit reporting agencies — Equifax, Experian and TransUnion — are offering free weekly online reports through April 2021.

Filter your phone calls - To help curtail the flood of spam calls, enter all your trusted contacts into your smartphone. This way, when the phone rings, your caller ID will let you know if it's one of them.

Manage your emails - Start marking as spam any suspicious or unwanted emails that show up in your inbox, so similar messages will be automatically routed to the trash.

Do a quick Facebook privacy checkup - Click the downward arrow button in the upper right corner of your Facebook page. Then click on Settings & Privacy and Privacy Checkup.

Vet unfamiliar e-retailers - Before purchasing something from a retailer you haven't used before, do a web search for the company's name, followed by the words “scam,” “fraud” and “complaints,” in order to get a fast read on its veracity.

Say no to gift cards - Prepaid gift cards have become one of the fastest-growing requested forms of payment from criminals, and they are virtually untraceable.

Copy all the contents of your wallet today - This is a simple way to protect yourself from identity theft and credit card fraud.

Don't send nudes! - This seems so obvious. But there has been a huge increase in extortion scammers who look for people on dating apps.

Stop, breathe, ask - Often, scammers rush their victims and push lots of emotional hot buttons to get you to stop thinking rationally. Never let strangers force you into fast decisions. Pause, calm yourself, and think clearly and critically.

  • Make Virtual Gatherings More Festive

Most of us are trying to figure out how to connect with family in the midst of a pandemic.

Step outside the ordinary, the usual.

By now, given we are months in this pandemic, adults, children, and even some pets have spent hours virtually on different devices. Being able to connect virtually is a blessing during a pandemic.

Virtual fun (alcohol may or may not be involved)

    • Virtual karaoke
    • Online toasts
    • Share an online meal together (or all order from same restaurant or type of restaurant)
    • Bring on acting chops and have a dramatic holiday reading
    • Wine tasting
    • Make it a pajama party
    • Host a charity donation party (eg., I’ll give you 10 bucks if you sing a holiday song for us, dress as an elf, send us all cookies beforehand, etc.). Have each member donate all the money to charity
    • Curate a holiday play list and send to everyone before your event/party. Get everyone to add their favorites.
    • Have a Scavenger hunt
    • Make it a dessert party (make together or make and send to everyone to eat together during the party)
    • Entertainment night – family members contribute- who can sing? play an instrument? do performance art? (or think they can). Bring on the amateur hour! On the other hand, I only found out as an adult that my family were just being polite when I played my accordion every Christmas!
    • Have an interactive gratitude party. Here is a super creative and fun list of different virtual gratitude activities, which were designed for Thanksgiving, but work equally well for all holidays. Why gratitude? It’s a great way to tap into a well of warmth and love, and when we express gratitude, we feel closer to others. That is the point, isn’t it?
    • Play a virtual game together –movie game trivia or holiday trivia, charades, Pictionary, online holiday bingo
    • Have a contest for best customized background (no green screens please!)

  • Learn How To Stabilize Your Blood Sugar Levels

Keeping blood sugar under control is key for good management of type 2 diabetes. Here’s how to navigate this sometimes complicated course of diabetes care.

Exercise. A regular exercise program has been shown to help manage blood sugar levels over time, and taking a varied approach to fitness is good for diabetes and health in general.

Weight Loss. If you’re overweight, it will be easier to stabilize blood sugar more effectively if you lose even a few pounds.

Diet. Many people with diabetes achieve better control over their blood sugar by limiting the kinds of foods that can cause blood sugar to spike.

Drinking Wisely. Alcohol can cause an immediate rise in blood sugar and then a drop a few hours later. It’s best to stick to moderate amounts and have some solid food with your beverage.

Medication. Your doctor may recommend different types of medication at different times during your diabetes treatment.

Asking More Questions Don’t be shy about asking your doctor or diabetes educator about how to interpret blood sugar numbers, or for clearer instructions to help stabilize blood sugar.
