On the eve of the 1987/88 season, Graeme Souness was asked about the newly increased expectations of the Rangers support. 'It is all nonsense', he snapped. 'Everyone has to realise that Rangers have no rights to anything. It’s time they changed their way of thinking.’

Quite why Souness was so defensive and uneasy with being favourites would become clear soon enough as this remarkable, yet chaotic, season got underway.
