Football player development is the topic in this edition of Schooled with the Professor. The Alliance of American Football (AAF) is heading into its third week of action. The XFL is preparing for a launch in 2020. But a third league is in the works that should be very interesting.
The Pacific Pro Football League is preparing to develop young football players and get them ready for the NFL. It’s founder, Don Yee, joins us to explain. This isn’t a league that is competing against the NFL. It’s a league designed to develop future NFL players.
I’ve known Don for three decades as an agent. He represents Tom Brady and has represented some of the top football players in those three decades. Don gives great detail in how this league will work: Starting in 2020, a four-team league will be formed, based in Southern California. Teams will have approximately 40 players and will be paid around $50,000 for a two-month schedule.
Colleges have been a feeder system for the NFL but the college game has drifted away from what the NFL does. Most college offenses don’t have fullbacks. The PPFL will have fullbacks. Quarterbacks will take snaps from the huddle and will get NFL offensive coaching. It’s been successful in lining up sponsors and experts. As everyone knows, developmental leagues are important for the future of the NFL.
