  • TRAPPED IN NEVERLAND (R.Kelly X Gayle King Interview, #LeavingNeverland, Akala & Solange)

Welcome back to Don’t Alert the Stans!

For this week’s episode the boys discuss if the western world would welcome virtual artists/bands in comparison to the Asian and K-Pop markets (00:12:15). Chris Brown is shoehorned into the conversation as Eden asks if it’s worth seeing him on tour in 2019 (00:19.05). Led by Sope, the boys share their thoughts on Solange’s polarizing new album ‘When I Get Home’. Breaking down its influences and how it compares to her previous projects (00:40:58). Akala’s Channel 4 interview and the controversy that later ensued on Twitter kicks off the news section this week (01:36:06). Next up the boys address R. Kelly’s interview with Gayle King where he vehemently denied all allegations (01:48:16). In the wake of Kanye West’s drama with EMI, the boys discuss whether this was a tactic engineered by Kris Jenner to get Kanye back in the public’s good graces (02:00:08). Rounding things off is the ongoing fallout and reactions to the Michael Jackson documentary ‘Leaving Neverland’ (02:13:28).

  • IT'S QUIET (#MuteRKelly, Ariana Grande and Drake's Vegas Residency)

Welcome back to Don’t Alert the Stans!

Last week was relatively slow one news wise - at least by the boys’ standard. No one was really moved by any of the major topics that buzzed around the music landscape in the last 7 days. Consequently, the episode structure is looser. Before officially kicking off the news section Eden asks Sope and Nic for their thoughts on whether artists in the UK are victims of incorrect genre categorizations (00:47:46). The boys then move onto the announcement that the Jonas Brothers are reuniting for a new album and share their thoughts on the new single ‘Sucker’ (01:08:48). A swift sidetrack sees the boys discuss the short-lived fame of OSH and what they think is next for people like him and Loz (01:16:46). The big elephant in the room is finally addressed as the boys once and for all offer their two pence on R. Kelly’s sexual abuse and child pornography changes (01:21:23). Next up Eden and Nic discuss their wider grievances with Ariana Grande’s persona in the midst of the recent controversy about her headlining Manchester Pride (01:48:55). Leading to a debate of what a ‘stan’ is and means (02:05:04). Lastly, the boys discuss the changing face and shifting connotations associated with performing in Vegas following the announcement that Drake will be hosting his own his residency there later this year (02:08:42).

A well-renowned journalist/writer/photographer who has written for FACT, Brick Magazine, Shortlist, Noisey, The Independent and many other platforms. He also works as a contributing editor for TRENCH Magazine. Kicking off the news this week, the boys sign off on the 2019 Brit Awards discussing the recipients of each award, Pink’s special achievement award and the lack of black artists nominated (00:53:24). Following on from this, the guys share their thoughts on the announcement that Soundcloud will now have a feature for that allows up and coming artists the chance to have their music distributed to streaming services including Spotify and Apple (01:23:10). Rounding off the episode is an in-depth discussion with Jesse as Nic, Eden and Sope pick his brain about a variety of topics such as the void TRENCH Magazine fills in the editorial landscape, whether there are more opportunities for black journalists in America compared to England, why the UK has a fickle relationship with R&B artists, who have been his favourite people to interview and so much more (01:31:50).

      And we’re back! Sort of…

Welcome back to Don’t Alert the Stans!

While Eden, Nic and Sope continue enjoying their downtime in the lead up to Season 2 they’ve decided to answer some listener questions. Firstly they’re asked for their thoughts on online platforms such as COLORS, NPR’s Tiny Desk and Mahogany Sessions and how they compare to traditional mediums of promotion (00:01:01). The boys then have a deep think about the artists who have aided in expanding their musical tastes in regards to different genres and artists they otherwise would never have listened to (00:07:58). Lastly as the industry and public surveys Normani’s rising star, the guys discuss whether there is still a need for artist development in the age of streaming and short attention spans (00:14:44).

    • 'LOVE, PEACE AND SOUL' (Soul Train Awards, Childish Gambino & Radio 1)
Welcome back to Don’t Alert the Stans!
For the penultimate episode of season 1, the news winds down and the boys follow accordingly, allowing for more free-flowing and tangential conversation. Radio 1’s poaching of Rickie, Melvin and Charlie from Kiss FM and what this means for diversity in broadcasting starts off the news agenda (00:40:00). The entirety of the Soul Train Awards is discussed in detail with Sope, Eden and Nic kicking things off with the soul cypher segment (00:44:50). Sope passionately preaches about the need to keep award shows like Soul Train alive as he verifies why Faith Evans and Erykah Badu deserved to be honoured for their indelible contributions to R&B (00:53:58). Once again, the boys share their mutual excitement and befuddlement when breaking down some of the acts that were nominated and won awards (58:53). Randomly this leads to a fiery dialogue about whether is correct to term Childish Gambino as a singer or rapper (01:04:26).

    • 'PROCEED WITH CAUTION' (Tekashi 6ix 9ine, Justine Skye, Wiley, Mariah Carey)
Welcome back to Don’t Alert the Stans!
For today’s episode, the conversation is more streamlined to focus on many of the controversial and worrying news that took place in the last week. With the possibility of an XXXTentacion fictionalised series apparently on the way, the boys ponder on the media’s obsession with glorifying abusers (00:47:30). Justine Skye’s implicit confirmation that Sheck Wes was the man behind her recent domestic violence situation is raised as the latter continues to have his breakout moment (00:55:25). Much to Eden and Nic’s happiness, Tekashi 6ix Nine has been arrested and is facing life imprisonment (01:04:42). The boys discuss why his punishment will set a good example to artists similar to him. Puzzled and confused, the boys seek to find an answer for where Wiley’s recent attacks at Skepta and Dizzee Rascal have come from (01:15:16).

On today’s episode, the boys are joined by Elijah Watson, Arriving from New York, Okayplayer’s Senior Culture Editor brings his nuanced perspective on all things music and culture related as they discuss the validity behind the idea of trans-racialism following Jamelia’s controversial comments (0:39:13). Netflix’s decision to navigate their transition into music via a new talent show fronted by Cardi B, Chance the Rapper and T.I. is put under the microscope as they consider the need for shows with this format in 2018 (0:55:15). The guys lift Michelle Williams up in prayer after the alarming revelation that her husband to be Chad Johnson mistakenly conflated race with mental health (1:12:48). Nic carefully provides a new outlook when remarking on City Girls and Yung Miami’s decision to double down on her violently homophobic comments (1:32:28). Lastly, the guys quiz and pick Elijah’s brain, traversing his origins in music journalism, the legacy the Soulquarians, the representation of Satanism in emo rap and who he prefers out of Outkast and A Tribe Called Quest (1:46:15).
