However, we'll also discover the fatal flaw in the way many people coach breathing, which may limit the gains received from these exercises. The technique of belly breathing is not biomechanically suitable for maximizing lung expansion and can lead to increased back musculature activity, limiting ribcage movement and decreasing the effectiveness of breathing exercises. We'll explain the proper technique for breathing to maximize your range of motion gains and get better gas exchange. We'll also discuss why mouth breathing can have negative effects, and how nasal breathing can provide many health benefits if done with the right technique, including increased nitric oxide production, which helps dilate blood vessels and the bronchi, and humidifying the air to reduce stress on the lungs. Proper tongue placement during nasal breathing is also essential to decrease nasal resistance.
