  • INFLUENCER – Week 3 LOVE

    CD#1387 01/31/21 Sun. A.M.

    “INFLUENCER – Week 3 LOVE”

*Pro. 29:18 Where there is no VISION (a dream of revelation), the people perish…!

Everyone influences someone. Sociologists tell us that even the most introverted individual will influence 10,000 other people during his or her lifetime. Note "Charity": Agape, 116 times Greek words for love. The Bible also mentions phileo, or brotherly love, and eros, erotic love.  Storge, which is a love between family members. Agape love is not a feeling; it is a motivation for action that we are free to choose or reject. Agape is a sacrificial love that freely suffers inconvenience, discomfort, and even death for the benefit of another without expecting anything in return.

Text: *1 Tim. 4:11-12 – be thou an “EXAMPLE” (too'-pos) = a die as struck or cast! How? - #1 in word, #2 in conversation,#3 IN CHARITY(AGAPE), #4 in spirit, #5 in faith, #6 in purity.

                                                    #1 IMITATE

*Read Eph. 5:1-2, & 8 – We are called to agape love through Christ's “EXAMPLE” Note “FOLLOWERS” (mim-ay-tace’) an imitator. See Paul’s influence after Jesus: 1 Cor. 4:14-21.

                                           #2 IMPACT

*Read John 13:34-35 – note COMMAND not an OPTION to love AS Christ loved! Notice the impact “ALL MEN” shall know! Read Matt.24:12 then Exodus 15:8 hotter or colder? (When God blows on the Christian, we get hotter and hotter yet on the unbelievers they wax colder)

                                           #3 INSIDE

*Read John 17:26, Rom. 5:5 & 8, Gal 5:22-25& Rev. 1:5-6- note your source of “LOVE” is God!

Illustration: #1 On May 2, 1962, a dramatic advertisement appeared in the San Francisco Examiner: "I don't want my husband to die in the gas chamber for a crime he did not commit. I will therefore offer my services for 10 years as a cook, maid, or housekeeper to any leading attorney who will defend him and bring about his vindication."

One of San Francisco's greatest attorneys, Vincent Hallinan, read or heard about the ad and contacted Gladys Kidd, who had placed it. Her husband, Robert Lee Kidd, was about to be tried for the slaying of an elderly antique dealer. Kidd's fingerprints had been found on a bloodstained ornate sword in the victim's shop. During the trial, Hallinan proved that the antique dealer had not been killed by the sword, and that Kidd's fingerprints and blood on the sword got there because Kidd had once toyed with it while playfully dueling with a friend when they were both out shopping. The jury, after 11 hours, found Kidd to be not guilty. Attorney Hallinan refused Gladys Kidd's offer of 10 years' servitude.

Illustration: #1 Samuel Clemens, more commonly known by his pen name, Mark Twain was a gifted writer. Yet Twain held a deep contempt for Christianity. He once referred to it as a “slaughterhouse religion” because of the doctrine of the blood atonement, and he often turned his ridicule on those who believed the Bible. He met and fell in love with Olivia Langdon, a young woman from a good Christian family. While they were courting he appeared to have downplayed his lack of faith, and she agreed to marry him. After their marriage, Twain began to openly mock Christianity once again, and before too much time passed, Olivia stopped attending church. Twain and his family suffered many great reversals, including a complete financial collapse and the death of a beloved daughter. At one point Twain attempting to comfort his grieving wife said, “Livy, if it comforts you to lean on your faith, do so.” She replied sadly, “I cannot. I do not have any faith left.”.

Illustration:  In the 1840s, John Geddie left the pastorate of a church in Canada to take his wife and two small children to the South Sea Islands to begin a mission work there. After a voyage of more than 20,000 miles, they arrived in the New Hebrides Islands at Aneityum. The island chain was filled with cannibals, and more than twenty crew members of a British ship had been killed and eaten just months before the Geddies arrived on the mission field.

They faced the difficulty of learning a language that had no written form and the constant threat of being killed. Slowly at first, a few converts came, and then soon many more received the Gospel. Geddie continued his ministry faithfully, including translating the entire Bible into the native language and planting twenty-five churches. For many of those years, Geddie labored with little help and little word from home, but God was faithful to His servant. In the pulpit of the church Geddie pastored for so many years stands a plaque in his honor which says: “When he landed in 1848, there were no Christians here, and when he left in 1872 there were no heathen.”.
