Motivation is a feeling — and feelings are unreliable when you're trying to rebuild your life, your finances, or your sense of self from the ground up. In this guest episode, Kerri Roberts sits down with Kelsey Thompson, entrepreneur, recovery advocate, and creator of the @livewelldresswell TikTok community, for one of the most candid and energizing conversations this show has hosted. Kelsey grew up with learning disabilities, struggled with addiction, lost her father, and blew through an inheritance before finally doing the deep internal work that changed everything — and she's not shy about any of it.
In this episode, you'll learn:
- Why discipline beats motivation every time when you're rebuilding — Kelsey's husband's "two slices of bread" framework: lock in your morning routine and your evening routine, because when those two things are consistent, everything that happens in between becomes far more manageable; the morning is spent on mind, body, and spirit, and the body of the day is the productive block that follows naturally from that foundation
- The neurological case for doing hard things daily — there is a specific part of the brain that, when you consistently do things you don't want to do (cold plunge at 34 degrees, running a mile, walking three miles), you actually strengthen the motivation center; doing hard things doesn't drain you, it trains the same brain region that governs the will to live; David Goggins and Can't Hurt Me are living proof of post-traumatic growth over post-traumatic stress
- How to break out of victim mentality and rewire toward gratitude — Kelsey's shift came through realizing that every thought pattern that started with "why don't I have what they have" was what was keeping her stuck in addiction; the work of reframing challenges as growth fuel, being grateful for the exact moment you're in rather than waiting for a future state, and interrupting negative thoughts in real time — her non-negotiable: the second a negative thought arrives, interrupt it and find the good
- Money mindset after addiction and inheritance loss — Kelsey blew through a large inheritance during her addiction and had to rebuild not just financially but relationally with money; the lesson: money deserves respect or you'll lose it, spending triggers the same dopamine hit as using, and the two-to-three day Amazon cart rule protects against impulse spending that's really emotional need in disguise
- What building a life you don't need to escape from actually requires — it starts internally; being grateful for where you are right now instead of wishing for what's next is when life starts handing you more; becoming your own best friend (learning to trust yourself, take care of your body, filter your content input) is the prerequisite for everything else; and people deserve chapters, not the whole story — pruning relationships during a rebuilding season is not rejection, it's self-stewardship
