This Sunday, starting our summer series on Psalms, we will look into Psalm 73, where the psalmist, Asaph, wrestles with why the wicked seem to prosper while the righteous struggle. He begins by expressing his envy of the arrogant and wicked, who live in comfort and wealth despite their evil ways. Troubled by this apparent injustice, he almost loses his faith, feeling that following God is in vain.

However, when Asaph enters the sanctuary of God and reflects on His ultimate justice, his perspective shifts. He realizes that the wicked are on a slippery path and will eventually face destruction, while those who remain faithful to God will be guided and upheld by Him. Asaph concludes by reaffirming his trust in God, acknowledging that nothing is more valuable to him than God's presence, for God is his strength and refuge.

Passage: Psalm 73

This Sunday, as we are taking a break from Matthew, Pastor Jake will explain Matthew 16:13-20. In this passage, Jesus asks His disciples who people say He is. They reply that some believe He is John the Baptist, Elijah, or one of the prophets. Jesus then asks them, "But what about you? Who do you say I am?" Peter responds, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God."

Jesus praises Peter for this confession, saying that it was revealed to him by God, not by human wisdom. He declares that Peter is the rock on which He will build His church, and that the gates of Hades will not overcome it. Jesus also gives Peter the "keys of the kingdom of heaven," granting him the authority to bind and loose on earth as in heaven. He then orders His disciples not to tell anyone that He is the Messiah.

Passage: Matthew 16:13-20

This Sunday, Pastor Jake explains Matthew 15:29-16:12, where Jesus heals many people, including the lame, blind, and mute, and the crowds praise God. He then miraculously feeds 4,000 men, plus women and children, with seven loaves and a few fish, with seven baskets of leftovers.

The Pharisees and Sadducees ask Jesus for a sign from heaven, but He responds that only the sign of Jonah will be given. He warns His disciples to beware of the "yeast" of the Pharisees and Sadducees, meaning their false teachings. The disciples misunderstand, but Jesus clarifies that He is warning them against the corrupting influence of these leaders' doctrines.

Passage: Matthew 15:29-16:12

This Sunday, we will explore Matthew 15:21-28, where Jesus travels to the region of Tyre and Sidon, and a Canaanite woman approaches Him, pleading for help. Her daughter is suffering from a demon, and she asks Jesus to heal her. At first, Jesus doesn't respond to her, and His disciples urge Him to send her away.

Jesus then tells her that He was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel. The woman, undeterred, humbly replies, "Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table." Impressed by her faith, Jesus tells her that her request is granted, and her daughter is healed from that very moment.

This passage highlights the woman's great faith and persistence, and it shows that Jesus' ministry extends beyond Israel, acknowledging the faith of those who believe in Him, regardless of their background.

Passage: Matthew 15:21-28

In Matthew 15:1-20, the Pharisees and teachers of the law criticize Jesus' disciples for not following the traditional Jewish rituals of handwashing before eating. Jesus responds by pointing out their hypocrisy, saying that they prioritize human traditions over God's commandments. He quotes Isaiah, saying, "These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me."

Jesus explains that it is not what goes into the body that defiles a person, but what comes out of the heart. He lists sins like evil thoughts, murder, adultery, theft, lying, and slander, all of which come from the heart and defile a person. This teaching challenges the idea that external rituals are what make someone clean, emphasizing instead the importance of inner purity and righteousness.
