After cordially offering Emma the opportunity to discuss her two favourite movies on the podcast earlier this year, Patrick has been campaigning for the same opportunity. However, we find ourselves locked in a now-months-long fight over whether Patrick’s second favourite film ‘Synecdoche, New York’ can be discussed. The battle continues! But, in the meantime, we’re discussing two of Patrick’s almost-favourite movies, ‘Big Fish’ (2003) and 「千と千尋の神隠し」(‘Spirited Away’, 2001). Emma hasn’t seen either, or any anime ever for that matter. You spoke, and we listened… it’s our first People’s Choice Week! We asked you which movies you wanted us to watch via polls on our Instagram stories, and these were the two you all voted for most. ‘Bridget Jones’s Diary’ (2001) and ‘Fight Club’ (1999). Two very contrasting films, which we love, one from either side of the millennium. Both of these films got under our skin in different ways, and we ended up going to strange places in our dissemination of them… is human breast milk vegan? Everything is up for debate! This week we talk role models, feminism, sadomasochistic eroticism, the nutritional qualities of blue soup, and come to the conclusion that some things are better left in the last century (like glorifying workplace sexual harassment for starters…)

Emma might try and pretend she’s one of the common folk, but the sad truth of the matter is she is deeply un-Australian. Amounting to what is effectively treason, up until this point Emma hadn’t seen the CLASSIC camp Australian films ‘Muriel’s Wedding’ (1994) and ‘The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert’ (1994). Thankfully good old Guncle Pat was here to help! This week we talk Drag Race Down Under, musical theatre, confetti, ABBA, Tweed Heads and so much more. This week we set out to fully meet the brief we set ourselves when starting this podcast; two films that are indisputable, absolute classics, that contrast each other greatly in genre and content, and that neither of us have ever seen before. And shit me, did we succeed! Listen to us talk ad nauseam once again about New York as we discuss ‘When Harry Met Sally…’ (1989), and then for bonus points count how many times we say the word c*nt as we discuss ‘The Silence of the Lambs’ (1991). Starting ‘Somewhere in the Indian Ocean’ with the high-octane and notoriously homoerotic ‘Top Gun’ (1986), we then veer to Detroit to wax rhapsodic about ‘8 Mile’ (2002). Is ‘8 Mile’ a bio-pic? Is Tom Cruise really that awful? (Yes.) And just what does a factory sound like? We dive into these movies to find out! So, adjust your balls, spread your legs across two seats and keep on earning more than your colleagues unquestioningly, while every day living an entirely privileged existence unthinkingly, coz this week it’s all about YOU (for a change…)

This week we paid a visit to the oeuvre of auteur director Christopher Nolan. We're both fans of his work, but there are a couple Emma hadn't seen yet. First we veered out of our comfort zone to watch 'The Dark Knight' (2008) (after watching 2005's 'Batman Begins' for homework), and then back to something more aligned to our regular programming to watch 'Inception' (2010). That's 454 minutes (7hrs 34min) of cinema, folks. We are tired. But some excellent discoveries were made! Who would have known that Batman had something to do with Bats, and that Christopher and Jonathan Nolan are not just brothers but actually the same person!

As a treat to Emma for getting through two very scary movies last episode, this week we watched her two favourite movies, which Patrick has never seen and has been deliberately been putting off watching to antagonise her; ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ (1981) and ‘Back to the Future’ (1985). This episode brings with it a great deal of fascinating, intellectually stimulating discussion about SpaghettiOs, the ins and outs of famous tantrums from both testaments of the Bible, and just what exactly a Blu-ray Disc is, as well as a detailed update on the failings of Patrick’s love life. Somewhere in all that we talk about the films and Patrick manages to thirst over Michael J Fox, but uncomprehendingly forgets to do so for Harrison Ford.

AAAND WE’RE BACK! We thought we’d kick off 2021 with a pretty hectic double bill of two movies we talked about on the podcast a lot last year, but never thought we’d get to watch; ‘The Sixth Sense’ (1999) and ‘Hereditary’ (2018). Patrick has seen and loved both and NEVER thought he would convince Emma to watch them, but he succeeded! Did she love them? Did she actually shit the bed? Did she guess the giant plot twist in ‘The Sixth Sense’ almost 10min into the film? (Yes, sigh.) Did Patrick sneakily manage to programme Toni Colette Week on the down-low? (Yes, please don’t bring it to Emma’s attention.) Our episodes will be released fortnightly from now on, so tune in again in 2 Fridays’ time for our next double bill!
