Merry Christmas! It’s Christmas Day, and fate has placed it on a Friday this year, so we thought we’d gift you one last episode before this dumpster-fire year comes to a finish. Given this is a Christmas Special, we’ve wrapped up something unique that we never intended to see the light of day… This is our ‘Draft’ episode, which we recorded to see if our idea ‘worked’ long before any of you even knew what we had been dreaming up. In this episode, we talk about the movie; ‘Meet Me in St. Louis’ (1944), starring Judy Garland. Is it a Christmas film? Is it a fever dream? Is it any good? Let Patrick and Emma of 4 months ago tell you in this Frankenstein of approaches, opinions and merriment. This is our final episode for 2020, and we’re taking a little break during January, but we’ll see you again soon enough, in early 2021!

Merry Christmas, ya filthy animal! The countdown to Chrissy Day is on, and even in this bizarre year it’s hard not to get a little excited! So we ditched our Netflix musical plans and instead leant into nostalgia and popped on Patrick’s two Christmas favourites, ‘Home Alone’ (1990) and ‘Home Alone 2: Lost in New York’ (1992). We’ve of course both seen these many, many times so to keep it from being too much of a cheat week, we also bravely decided to watch ‘Home Alone 3’ (1997), which, in fact, we had both always resisted watching at all. We can bend the rules, but we can’t break them just yet.

We are firmly into the festive season now, with supermarkets blaring Christmas songs and lists being checked twice. Continuing our Christmas capers, we watched two more classics, the movie that goes by a thousand names, ‘Dr Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas’ (2000) and the movie most people think of when you say ‘Christmas movie’; ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ (1946). We naturally manage to veer off-topic to talk about our favourite topics (sport and Catholicism), but also our favourite hobby, skin care. Most importantly, we discover who The Grinch really is, and he’s pretty close to home…

Well it’s December, and love it or loathe it the silly season is upon us. We are ourselves rather silly, so we are doing four Christmas Specials spanning the month of December, including a uniquely special episode that drops on Christmas Day itself! This week we fed Emma Choceur after midnight and said ‘Bye, Buddy!’ as we watched two bangers that Patrick had never seen before from the Khamis/Younis Christmas Collection; Elf (2003) and Gremlins (1984). Yes, we did say Silly Season. Join us as we wander off-topic as only we know how through Tamagotchi traumas and vegetarian violations, while sometimes talking about these Christmas Crackers.

Y’all, this week is epic. A hole in each of our understandings of cinema as big as the Grand Canyon itself. This week we took a massive road trip across The South, and watched two pillars of American cinema from the 90s, back to back, in our longest episode yet; ‘Thelma & Louise’ (1991) and ‘Forrest Gump’ (1994). Geena Davis, Susan Sarandon, Tom Hanks, Sally Field, Brad Pitt, Harvey Keitel, Robin Wright, Gary Sinise… I mean, what else is there to say? We laughed, we cried, we ugly cried and sobbed, and each of us walked away with a new favourite. Run Forrest, Run, don’t walk to catch this week’s episode!

This week we pay homage to the Smile That Sailed A Thousand Romantic Comedies, to the embodiment of the 90s, to Julia Roberts. We watched two movies that neither of us had seen with a decade between them; 1990’s ‘Pretty Woman’ and 2000’s ‘Erin Brockovich’, which nabbed her an Academy Award. From garish 90s food to our recommendations for regional NSW Chinese restaurants, we had a lot to say in this week!

This week we decided to choose two movies that just had absolutely no business in being corralled together, and actually had the best time. First up it’s ‘What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?’ (1962), the film that rebooted the careers of Bette Davis and Joan Crawford and started a whole new genre: hag horror. And then we move on to Avatar (2009), the dream-work a decade in the making from James Cameron; an overwhelmingly large film (maybe he’s compensating for something?) which seems pretty simple on paper… because that’s what it, in fact, is. If you like your movie stars fading and desperately clambering for relevance, and if you like your sci-fi overlong and unoriginal, or perhaps you just LOVE the Papyrus font, this episode is for you!

Halloween is over, but this week we took a trip down to the Spooky Southern Highlands to visit Patrick’s parents. After doing all the driving (proud!), taking her to see gardens of tulips and buying her a 24-slice ‘Colossal’ sized pizza that measured approx 100x50cm, Patrick finally convinced Emma to watch some movies that are actually scary. In this episode full of hilarious hi-jinx, we watch ‘The Ring’ (2002) and ‘The Cabin in the Woods’ (2011). Screams were screamed, faces were covered and unforgivable awful pranks were pulled to heighten the experience. Emma suffered for your entertainment this week, don’t let it be in vain…

It’s Halloween this week! Even though we don’t support importing American holidays and customs as a rule, and we think that trick or treating in Australia is about as stupid as it gets (especially during a pandemic), we thought it would be fun to be a lil’ bit spooky. But not too much! Emma can’t cope with scary movies, so we walked down a quirky, kooky spooky road and were haunted along the way by a brand new film for us both, ‘Death Becomes Her’ (1992), and an absolute classic that we hadn’t seen in aaaaages, ’Young Frankenstein’ (1974). By the time we’d finished taping this episode, Patrick convinced Emma to watch some genuinely scary movies next week. Stay tuned for some real horror very soon…
