  • Apple iPhones Get New iOS 16 Update & End Of The Road For PixelBooks?
The latest version of Apple's operating system for iPhones has been launched. iOS 16 offers a range of new features for its users, but here at Double Tap, we focus on accessibility first. Joining Steven and Shaun is Shelly Brisbin, author and podcaster, to talk about the OS's new features and debate whether it's time to make the upgrade.
There's also news from Apple that RCS (Rich Communication Services) won't be coming to the iPhone, meaning Android users will have to put up with a lesser texting experience between them and iPhones. Plus, Google has apparently shut down the department that makes PixelBooks, meaning the end of such devices despite them being talked about being shown off in the next month.

  • Tributes Paid To Queen Elizabeth, Apple Pre-Orders Begin & Getting Around Without GPS
Following the death of Queen Elizabeth II on the 8th of September, the blind guys Steven Scott and Shaun Preece pay tribute and look at how the tech world has reacted to the news.
However, we are a tech show - no really, we are - so today we focus on what Steven has pre-ordered ahead of the launch of products in the coming weeks. There's also talk on how the specialist devices such as the new StellarTrek can compete with the new Apple Watch Ultra which, apparently, offers more accurate GPS than ever. Time will tell.
There's also a chance to hear your feedback, and there's a great question from listener Callum, who wants to know how to easily navigate his local bus station without the help of GPS. Is there a solution that doesn't involve costly calls to Aira or being reliant on other GPS applications?
As always, we welcome and enjoy hearing your feedback. Get in touch by emailing [email protected] or calling 1-877-803-4567. You can also find us across social media @DoubleTapOnAir.

  • Apple releases new iPhones, Watches & AirPods
We are hot on the heels of Apple's "Far Out" Event that took place on the 7th of September at Apple's HQ in Cupertino, California, where they have announced a new range of iPhones, Watches and new AirPod Pros.
Today on the show, Steven Scott and Shaun Preece are joined by AbilityNet's Robin Christopherson who is also the host of the Dot to Dot podcast for fans of the Echo from Amazon. Together the trio discusses the new range of iPhone 14s, including the new built-in feature that enables everyone to get access to signals even if they are out of range using new satellite technology. There's also talk about the new Pro iPhones too, with better cameras and a new display feature exclusive to the range.
There's also a lot of interest from Steven on the new Apple Watch Ultra, which is intended for those who like to go hiking, climbing or do other major outdoor activities. However, Steven is convinced this is the perfect blind person's Apple Watch due to its new features, like extra and more pronounced buttons, better speakers and greater GPS accuracy.
And lastly, there's the AirPods Pro 2. With new features such as a built-in speaker on the case for easier finding when lost and new adaptive transparency which dulls loud sounds, there's lots to offer the disability community at large.
What do you think of the announcements, and will you be buying anything? Email us [email protected] or call 1-877-803-4567 and leave us a voicemail.

  • Apple Event Looming & The Last Of Us Part 1 Is Finally Accessible
As blind guys Steven and Shaun get ready for another big Apple event, the focus of the feedback is on AirPods, Spatial Audio and iPads, plus there's news of a big Google event as they look to announce their new Pixel 7 smartphone and, possibly, the new Pixel Watch. But will the Android fans be happy to hear that Apple is now the most dominant smartphone maker in the U.S., according to new research?
Also, we talk in-depth about gaming as a blind person. Today we meet SightlessKombat, a blind guy who loves playing games and one new game, in particular, is very much keeping him busy. The re-release of The Last Of Us Part 1 for Playstation 5 owners has brought about huge accessibility updates, meaning Sightless can now fully play and enjoy the gaming experience like everyone else, or at least close to the same experience. Listen to his insightful review of the game and how the gaming industry is coming around to developing such features in all games going forward.
As always, it's your feedback that we are most looking forward to reading. Email us [email protected] or leave us a voicemail at 1-877-803-4567. Also, find us on social media @DoubleTapOnAir.

  • More Feedback On GPS & A Review Of Stellar Trek from Humanware
It's another big week in tech as the media world focuses on Apple's big announcement. But here at Double Tap HQ we are focused on what you have to say are the big issues, and at the moment our mailbox is filling up with comments on GPS devices and apps. How good are they, and do they actually help us be more independent?
Also on the show, the blind guys are joined by Nathan Tree. He is an accessibility trainer working in Oxfordshire in the UK and has just spent some time with the most talked-about device in the blind community at the moment, the Stellar Trek from HumanWare. Find out his thoughts on how well the device performs with competing smartphone apps out there.

Plus they announce the new X1 Fold - a 16-inch laptop that folds in half. And there's also a new Chromebook that offers real power for a low price.

Also in the news this week there's the story of USB 4 being made available soon. The new standard will offer up to 80gb/s compared to it's predecessor USB 3 which offered half those speeds of transfer.

And of course there's lots of chat ahead of Apple's big event on Sept 7th. We'll have full coverage straight after the event on Thursday's episode of Double Tap on AMI-audio and on podcast.

  • Aira Now Available On Envision & Blindshell Classic 2
It was the news many of us were hoping for but never thought would actually happen! The visual interpreter service Aira has finally become available on two new devices, with more to come.
Today on the podcast Steven Scott and Shaun Preece are joined by Jenine Stanley from Aira to talk about the new devices that can now use Aira on borad, namely the Envision Glasses and the popular Blindshell Classic 2 mobile phone. What makes this announcement pretty exciting is that it brings what was a smartphone only service to people who want to use Aira handsfree - using Envision - and those who don't want or don't have a smartphone - the Blindshell Classic 2.
Jenine talks to the guys about the development and working with the companies involved and also teases the other devices that Aira will be making its way over to in the coming months.
The guys also read through your email which has a lot of discussion around the subject of GPS apps and also thoughts on the new Stellar Trek GPS and OCR device from Humanware.
As always, we love your feedback so please keep in touch by emailing [email protected] or call our listener line on 1-877-803-4567. You can also find us across social media using the @DoubleTapOnAir handle.
