  • Episode 144: The Perfect Braille Display, Custom Gestures & How to Install iOS Betas
It’s that time again, another hour of the latest tech discussion with the Double Tap Canada team. And talking of time, Steven thinks he may just have come up with a million-dollar idea for the perfect alarm clock, probably not coming soon to a store near you.
In last week’s episode Steven thought he had found the perfect keyboard in the Logitech MX Keys for Mac. Now, this week, he thinks he may well have found the perfect braille display. The Mantis Q40 is a braille display with a difference, it uses a QWERTY keyboard instead of standard braille keys for input. With the ability to connect to 5 different devices via Bluetooth, Steven loves both the convenience and familiarity of using a QWERTY keyboard with a 40-cell braille display built in. But could the switch to QWERTY rather than traditional braille keys actually be a bad thing?
Next, it’s on to the listeners feedback. Kamal tells us his opinions on the MX Keys keyboard & wrist rest and Brian has a question on how to change a gesture on the iPhone. Luckily enough, Tim has the answer.
Finally, if you have ever wanted to become an iOS beta tester, Shaun’s not so High Speed How To will show you how to download and install a Public Beta version of iOS.

  • Episode 143: The Perfect Keyboard, Goodbye Safari, Hello Edge & Heavy Pudding
Prepare for another hour of happy, coffee fueled tech talk as it’s time for another Double Tap Canada.
Steven’s credit card, and possibly marriage, feel the strain again as he’s been buying himself some new tech this week. As a confirmed keyboard addict, has he finally found the perfect keyboard with the recently released Logitech MX Keys? With its full sized layout, USB C charging and backlit keys, he certainly thinks so.
Next, Tim Schwartz tells us why he can’t wait to ditch Safari & Mail as his default apps in iOS14. So much so in fact that he’s already got his replacement apps lined up. You may be surprised by his choices. We certainly were…
Listener Stan starts the second half of the show with an excellent demo of the Paramed Talking Blood Pressure monitor. Then contributor Robin suggests a new feature called What’s In Your Dock. He’ll be telling us just what apps are in his dock on his Apple Watch, and Steven, Shaun & Tim will reveal all too.
Finally, if you’re tired of having to type your long, complicated email address or regular re-occurring phrase all the time, Shaun’s, High Speed How To on using text replacements in iOS could help. Oh, and of course, the show ends on a argument about custard…

  • Episode 142: iPhone SE 2020 News & First Impressions of the New WeWalk Smart Cane
Join Steven Scott, Shaun Preece & this weeks guest Shelly Brisbin in this latest episode of Double Tap Canada.
Firstly, the DTC team try to clear up some recent confusion regarding if some of the new iOS 14 accessibility features will actually be available on the new iPhone SE. Is it still a great choice for the visually impaired?
Next, Steven has got his hands on the new WeWalk Smart Cane and has taken it out for a test drive. With a sonar sensor, haptic feedback, built-in speaker, touchpad and a smaller, lighter design then the previous generation, will this replace Steven’s current long cane?
Finally, it’s on to the listener emails and voicemails. Maybe you can help answer a listener question regarding Jaws and an easy way to change punctuation levels? Staying with Jaws, Ryan explains just what you get for your money that you don’t get with the free options like NVDA or Narrator. Also, Tiffany asks about accessibility and the Amazon Fire tablet.
All this and more, including what do Americans do with custard and Steven’s broken horn, only on Double Tap Canada.

  • Episode 141: LIDAR Gets Deep, AIRA Comes to the UK, and Your Screen Reader Views
In this week’s Double Tap Canada, Steven & Shaun are joined by a special, and somewhat mysterious, guest simply known as The Kayaker. As someone who has a long background in coding & development, he has been taking a look at the developer sessions from Apples WWDC and will be telling us just what features and apps we should be looking forward to in the near future.
Next, we dive into your emails with some interesting opinions on Bose AR Frames, just what is the best screen reader to start with and some strong views on Jaws and it’s pricing model.

  • Episode 140: Accessibility Highlights from the Apple WWDC 2020 Event
What else would Double Tap Canada be talking about this week? Yes, you may think you’ve heard everything there is about Apple’s recent Worldwide Developers conference, but the DTC team have been busy looking for what is new when it comes to accessibility in Apples upcoming software.
With improvements to Voiceover’s ability to recognize and describe unlabeled elements in apps and websites, sign language recognition, photo captioning, a new back tap gesture in iOS14 and Air Pod transparency improvements, there’s a lot to look forward to then just your watch telling you to wash your hands and go to bed…

  • Episode 139: Amicis Social Media, Bose Woes & Shocking Narrator News
Brace yourselves for another hour of tech news & views in this week’s Double Tap Canada. With the upcoming release of a new social media platform just for people with disabilities, should Amicis be seen as a great resource for help and information or does it do more to separate us from the mainstream?
In some shocking news, Steven Scott has been using nothing but Microsoft Narrator as his Windows screen reader for a few days and, at least so far, he doesn’t miss Jaws. Could it be possible that Narrator has improved so much that it could even be considered a replacement for Jaws?
Tim gets quite a shock himself with the news that Bose are cancelling all work on their augmented reality apps for the Bose AR Frames. With some store closures and job losses, could this mean the end for the popular Bose AR Frames?
Finally, we take a look at some of the rumors surrounding the imminent WWDC event, including Apples possible move to using ARM processors. This will allow for thinner, sleeker hardware and more regular updates, but what about software compatibility?

  • Episode 138: What’s The Use Of A Smart Watch & Key2Access, A Safer Way to Cross The Road
"Double Tap Canada kicks off this week with a seemingly simple question. “What do you use your smart watch for?” This should be easy to answer, so why is it Steven, Shaun & Jay Taylor have such a hard time answering it? And why does Shaun hate Mickey Mouse?
Next, it’s on to the listener feedback. Luke is looking for an accessible Markdown editor and Angela is frustrated by the lack of assistance since social distancing. Tiffany tells us how Narrator is the only screen reader she uses, and also wants to know how to change the VoiceOver voice on her Apple Watch. Steven thinks he knows the answer, but does Shaun believe him?"

  • 3D Audio Debate, Latest Narrator Updates & Steven In Hot Water
Join Steven Scott, Shaun Preece & Tim Schwartz as they dive into all the latest tech news in this week’s episode of Double Tap Canada.
Following Microsoft’s Ability Summit, Steven wants to talk about Project Tokyo. But, does 3D positional audio have any real practical use for accessibility or is it purely for entertainment. While Steven & Tim imagine this being used with other virtual reality technologies to enable a new level of online shopping, Shaun is unconvinced.
Next, with the latest Windows 10 update bringing improvements to Narrator, just how close is it to replacing established screen readers such as Jaws or NVDA and just what are the improvements?
Finally, we have a voicemail from Tiffany with her experience of the WeWALK smart cane and her tips on buying an Apple Watch.

  • Episode 136: Apple Glass Leaks, New Smart Cane Option & LED Light Love
This week’s Double Tap kicks off with Steven telling us all about his new home studio and his new love for LED light strips. But, just as with his big screen TV, surely, there can be no reason for a visually impaired person to care about smart lighting, or is there?
Next, Steven invites us all to play his exciting new game, “What’s in The Box”. Yes, he’s been buying again, this time it’s a new iPad Pro 11, but did he go all in and get the touchpad enabled Magic keyboard too?
It’s then on to a discussion of the recent rumours regarding the much-anticipated smart glasses from Apple. With no built-in speakers and no camera, is there anything here of interest, or use, to the visually impaired? And why does Shaun want them to be more expensive?
Tim then tells us of a new version of the WeWalk smart cane that is available for pre-order. The WeWalk special edition promises to be more durable and offer more features. But are the team yet convinced of the benefits of smart tech when it comes to mobility.
The show wraps up with a High Speed How To on removing programs in Windows and a strange insight into Stevens childhood...

  • Episode 135: Big Screen Debate, Off the Peg Tech & Steven Goes Trucking Crazy
Double Tap is back with a fun packed episode as Steven, Shaun & J Taylor talk about just what tech is making them happy during these strange days.
Steven is so excited about his latest tech purchase, a 75 inch television, but will Shaun’s negativity ruin it for him? If your level of vision is so low, is there any advantages in a big screen tv at all?
Next, J Taylor tells us about his experience with the Samsung Gear VR headset and an video magnifier app that he’s been using recently. With it he’s been able to read departure boards in airports etc, but how does this mainstream solution compare to his E-Sight headset? This ties in nicely to a discussion on the future of specialized tech from last week’s show, and we hear from one listener with her thoughts on the topic.
Finally, Steven tells us of his new obsession. Truck driving. Don’t panic though, it’s a virtual truck! With only a Playstation, steering wheel and a large monitor strapped to his face, he spends many a happy hour hauling cargo across Europe. If this sounds good to you, he’ll let you know exactly what he’s using. I feel a blind convoy coming on…
