  • Catching Up with Our Friends at Aira
Today on the show, Steven and Shaun catch up with a good friend of the show from the visual interpreter service, Aira. Jenine Stanley joins the guys to discuss everything from the new Screen Share feature available now on the new Aira Explorer app for iOS and Android, plus there are details of a new podcast to help deepen the understanding of what Aira is to a wider audience. And the company wants to hear from you to help shape its future.
Also, there’s more of your feedback including a question on NFC tags from listener Ronnie, and a look at some of the big news stories in tech right now, such as the latest from China where it’s reported that mobile manufacturer Huawei has already trademarked the name "Vision Pro" being used by Apple for its new headset. What does that mean, and does a new patent discovered in Europe on the weekend trademarking the name "Apple Reality" give us any more clues?

  • WayAround Tags, Phone Link App Woes & Shakespeare?
Today on the show, Steven and Shaun get into a heated topic off the top about Shakespeare! It’s a tech show, honest!
Then, they get back on track (sort of) and listen to more of your feedback including a question from Caleb on how best to support someone losing their sight, a query from Callum on how to use the Phone Link app on Windows, and a rather hilarious email from Greg who observes the unusual species that is the radio show host.
And there’s a demo of the new WayAround app, available on the Blindshell Classic 2, from Michael Babcock from the UnMute Presents podcast.

  • OpenScape, Changes at Reddit & Your Feedback
Today on the show, Steven and Shaun talk about the breaking news over the weekend that a group of developers have come up with an alternative to the much-loved Microsoft SoundScape app, called OpenScape. The new app is in a beta phase and is slowly being rolled out to people who want to take part in order to give feedback. At the time of recording the beta program was full, but the developer told Double Tap that it would open up again “in the coming days.”
Double Tap correspondent Michael Babcock sent in an early demo of the new app in action. Follow this link to access the beta when more spaces become available: https://testflight.apple.com/join/Y6Cj2cLk
Also, protests have begun within the Reddit community after the company decided to bring in what some are calling "exorbitant" fees for third parties to access their APIs, meaning developers of apps that give people access to Reddit would have to pay large fees to do so.
Despite the disabled community appearing to get a pass following comments by the company’s CEO, long-time moderator of the r/Blind subreddit, Samuel Proulx, told Double Tap that all was not as it seemed as he joins Steven and Shaun for an in-depth look at the story. Read more about the Reddit protest here: https://www.theverge.com/2023/6/12/23755974/reddit-subreddits-going-dark-private-protest-api-changes
And of course, there is more of your feedback including comments regarding the Freestyle Libre app that listener CC from Montreal has been having issues with.

  • Double Tap Express: Apple's WWDC Recap & The Other Tech News This Week
Steven and Shaun kicked off this week's Double Tap Express with their take on Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference where the tech giant dropped some serious tech news. They've got a new 15-inch MacBook Air, an upgraded Mac Studio, and a Mac Pro, all boasting the M2 chip.
On the software side, we've got iOS 17, iPadOS 17, and macOS 14 (Sonoma) coming our way with a bunch of cool features. And let's not forget the audio upgrades for AirPods and CarPlay, new control centre for TVOS, and revamped Watch Faces for Watch OS 10.
But the showstopper was the Apple Vision Pro, a mixed-reality headset that's got everyone buzzing. We also had a deep dive into the accessibility of the new Apple Vision Pro. We heard from Michael Babcock and Shelly Brisbin on their initial thoughts from a blind and low vision perspective, and got a lowdown on the device's accessibility features and how the VoiceOver screen reader will work on it. Shelly also shared her thoughts on the device being used indoors only, while Double Tap TV’s Marc Aflalo gave his two cents on the design of the device. Colin Hughes also talked about the benefits of this type of technology from his perspective as someone with muscular dystrophy.
And don't forget to catch the "Other" Tech News This Week with Grace Scoffield, featuring stories about updates to Aira, good news for blind Reddit users and a much-requested app that has come to the Blindshell Classic 2.
And in true Apple-style, we have our own One More Thing. And that’s your feedback, following the big news from Apple this week.

  • WWDC Coverage: Using Vision Pro With A Physical Disability
Today on the show, Steven sits down with Colin Hughes, a disability advocate with muscular dystrophy who struggles with movement and breathing. He shares his unique perspective on the accessibility features of Apple's latest announcements, particularly the Vision Pro and the improvements in dictation in iOS 17.
Colin, who interacts with technology primarily through voice due to severe muscle weakness, highlights the potential of these advancements. Colin's transformative experience with the Ray-Ban Stories smart glasses underscores the potential of accessible technology like Vision Pro. He shares, "I could not take my own photos and videos that so many people take for granted every day until I put on the Ray-Ban Stories smart glasses and hey, presto, I could take my first ever photo, my first ever video."
Despite his excitement about these advancements, Colin also raises concerns about the physical nature of the Vision Pro and the potential impact on the development of accessibility features in existing Apple products. He concludes, "I feel that in 10 years from now, Apple will have lightweight glasses. I think that is the end goal, and they will get there, but I think Meta might get there first."
There’s also more listener comments following the announcements this week from Apple and also a request from listener Anne-Marie to promote a Facebook group supporting Nicky Button, who is blind and walking from the Orkney Islands in Scotland to Worcestershire to raise awareness of blindness and educate people on the needs and aspirations of people who are blind. You can find out more about Nicky’s trip by following her and joining her Facebook group: https://m.facebook.com/groups/1802341066766453/?ref=share

  • Link for iPhone, Smartish Toaster & Tanned Butchers
Today’s episode sees the return of an old favourite segment known as "What Steven Bought This Week."
Steven has a shiny new jingle and an equally shiny new gadget in a box, so why is it that Shaun seems less than impressed?
Next up it’s on to the newly-updated Phone Link app for Windows. Phone Link is an app that allows you to make calls, message and read notifications on your phone from your computer. Previously, it only supported Android phones but with its most recent update, it now supports the iPhone. Steven gives us a guided tour around the app and shows us what it can do. All this, your feedback and an epic Embarrassing Blind Blunder.
Plus, don’t forget to tune in tomorrow for all the news from Apple's WWDC event.
