The king has goaded the Deep Ones into a killing rage. Now they pour from the sea in their tens of thousands, a living tidal wave of frog-like devils. He rides for the cliffs, where sixteen thousand veterans wait in a hollow square. The Silver Shields. The Cretan archers. The sarissa pikes with their “little teeth.”

Seven times the horde assaults the fortress of men. Seven times they are thrown back. Seleucus leads a sally that cuts through the enemy like a switch through weeds. But then the priests of Dagon raise their arms to the sky, and black tendrils of darkness rise from the ocean. Father Dagon and Mother Hydra have come to aid their children. The sun is blotted out. The Deep Ones laugh.

It looked to me as if some of the catamites had webbed fingers. Just like peasants who go about their business with their cousins too much”.

Both men shuddered.”
