Eating photographs...Investigating your own murder as a ghost...A massive infinite hole in the ground...and Drowning Pool, the band...what the what?? Dan and Raul dig into two new TV offerings that were very recently released. Roar, over on AppleTV+ offers an anthology series based centrally on feminist stories (The guys cover primarily the Nicole Kidman and Alison Brie episodes), and Outer Range (Amazon), a modern western with a twilight-zone twist. Both these shows don't exist completely in our reality, although they present themes and offer the opportunity for greater discussion on humanist tropes in fresh new ways. DTW hopes you will alter your reality and join the discourse, literally!
Down to Watch is back with a couple of April shows worth talking about! After a week off processing the overstuffed April-Upcomings episode, Dan and Raul are back to grab a couple off of the top of the heap and discuss Halo and the first two episodes of Atlanta season 2. The sci-fi first-person shooter turned live action big budget tentpole for Paramaount+ has a built in audience, but can Halo survive the trek across mediums and the alterations it comes with? Also, Atlanta returns with two episodes to launch a third season over three years after the second ended, but decides to come off the blocks with a very challenging and unconventional episode before sliding back into what it's done well since the beginning. In case you're wondering whether these shows and their showrunners are making the right calls or the wrong moves, this podcast will tell you the answers! Lucky you!
This podcast is bursting with new April shows! Down to Watch does the usual end of month mambo with all the upcoming offers straight from the streaming TV fountains. Dan and Raul get to as much as they can in one episode, including Walken across the pond, pedigreed tv creators revisiting Baltimore crime, a baby driver reporting on vice in Tokyo, first ladies, a fantastical Laker, even a perfectly good western with a big hole in it! Will the feminist fables of Roar, the Hollywood history of The Offer or a bunch of British ladies in prison find their audiences? Maybe the answer is inside this pod!
Down to Watch has another pair of recently released series to talk about with Apple TV+'s, WeCrashed and Amazon Prime's, The Boys Present: Diabolical! Dan and Raul are keeping current with the streaming releases mentioned in their monthly upcoming pods, and this week they watched the first episode of the WeWork docu-drama starring Jared Leto and Anne Hathaway where there is plenty to discuss, from Jared Leto channeling The Room's Tommy Wiseau to the dramatized rags to riches (and sometimes back to rags?) trends in streaming storytelling. Before that, the guys go over the new Amazon Prime animated anthology, Diabolical, which sees different art styles on display and how connected these 'toon short films fit in the world of, The Boys. This is an episode about two shows worth talking about, definitely worth listening to, too!
This week, Down to Watch is checking in with a galaxy far away and a dynasty close to home! Dan and Raul are joined by Jonnie this week, so of course the conversation starts off with one of the biggest pop culture properties as they move their big screen stars onto their streaming service. Disney unveiled a trailer for Obi Wan Kenobi, a new limited series from the Star Wars film world, so the guys predict the future of The House of Mouse's big space opera. They move on to the topic of the week, the freshly minted HBO series, Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty. All the hosts have seen the first episode and trade opinions on the style, casting, and direction of the show, as well as some of the social commentary. This episode is Magic! And Old Ben!
March already!?! The month in TV is heating up early, and Down to Watch is back to report on three new streams that are worth talking about. Dan and Raul both caught the beginning of Joe Vs Carole, the Peacock-based docu-dramedy sprung from the Tiger King phenomenon based on the cartoonish blood feud between the titular characters. Dan's also got a new show to discuss, Hulu's The Dropout; a dramatization of the headline-grabbing pharma scandal surrounding Elizabeth Holmes. And, Raul rounds the ep out with thoughts on the period pirate comedy, HBO Max's This Flag Means Death. The year in television is picking up steam, and DtW is talkin 'bout streams!
This is the podcast your TV wants you to listen to! Down to Watch is back with another episode covering the upcoming shows and streams, and March 2022 has plenty to talk about. There's plenty of retellings based on true stories with big IRL characters, from a Tiger King dramatization, shows about the falls of WeWork and Theranos, and the incredible rise of the Showtime Lakers. Dan and Raul are also talking giant properties like Halo and Disney/Marvel's Moon Knight, smaller slice of life, Amy Schumer comedy Life & Beth, and more! There's too much new tv info to fit it all on one pod, so listen twice and get it right!
Dan and Raul go corporate this week on DTW discussing the new AppleTV+ show, Severance. The work/life balance has always been rough for people, but this dystopian near-future view of workers takes it to a whole new creative level and tells us there is a creepy solution to solve this conundrum...think Maniac (a great Netflix sci-fi series) mixed with a bit of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and a dash of Black Mirror. The guys liked it much and think most humans will too! Shows also covered this week include Reacher (new to Amazon), a great blend of detective murder mystery and fisticuffs, Pam & Tommy over on Hulu provides greater context to the origins of how the infamous sex tape leaked and what affect it had on Pamela Anderson due to the poor media coverage. Theres a few other TV offerings the guys quickly discuss, so listen ahead to find out!!
This week, four friends joke around about Jackass Forever! The last episode before the podcast becomes an L.A./S.F. collaboration, Dan and Raul are lucky to have both Natalia AND Jonnie back to talk about a fourth (and final?) round of the Jackass crew committing grievous bodily harm to themselves for the enjoyment of others, with various levels of regret. With the jackasses having provided two decades of creativity, bravery and heart poured into a passion project aimed solely at delighting fans and each other, the DtW crew discusses whether Knoxville and Co earned the amount of uncensored male genitalia being damaged on such a large screen. The positives and negatives of aging show on the team of stunt goofballs tossing themselves across the big silver screen, and talking about it makes a great podcast so go listen!
February upcomings are here, everyone! The shortest month is anything but when it comes to new tv shows, so the Down to Watch monthly preview returns to rile up small screen aficionados in anticipation. Dan and Raul quickly recap what they thought of last months offerings and run through what's in cinemas for this month before launching into the mostly streaming programs worth mentioning. There's talk of rock star sex tapes escaping onto the internet, improv detectives solving silly cases, a reboot explaining what "one little fight" actually looked like, behind the scenes stories of the rise of Uber, and more! This is the podcast ep that 2022 has been waiting for!!!
