For older elementary and early secondary students.
Katherine Paterson writes like no one else. She has been one of my all-time favorites authors for many years. I would offer this book to 5th through 7th grade students. Katherine deals with difficult issues often in her novels for older elementary and early secondary students. She does so in such a manner that children can often identify with the characters and know that they are not alone in their difficulties. Bravo Katherine once again.
Great book for a 9/10 year old.
Grand-daughter has this book to read on the honors program at school. Loved the story. Will donate to the school library

I purchased this book for my daughter as replacement for a copy that someone borrowed from her and didn't return.
    An Overlooked Treasure
I stopped to read the reviews here and decided to add my own.
My grandmother gave this book to me when I was about 12 and I took one look at it and stuffed it away on the bookshelf. I was busy reading books like Sweet Valley High and a book about some hick kid in West Virginia did not appeal to me at all.
But being the voracious reader that I was, I pulled it out one day out of boredom and much to my surprise, it's become one of my favorite books. I still put it out to this day and read it (I'm 31.) For a book about some of the most down home, country, even 'hillbilly' people you'll ever read about, it has a surprising touch of dreaminess and whimsy and is just full of characters that draw readers into their world. I just loved James' grandmother, and felt his heartache when they were separated. She was a character and a 1/2...I defy anyone to read about her and not dream of meeting such a woman someday, smoking her pipe, telling it like it is in her thick accent, and loving with all her might.
James is living in rural West Virginia with his grandmother while his family, who have their own classic country and western band, tour and try for their big break. James has a beautiful voice as well, but only likes to sing for his grandmother. His family returns for a visit one day, and invite a manager to come see them perform. The manager likes them, but is mostly taken with James and agrees to sign them-but only if James is included.
James goes to live in the city with his family, where they get a regular spot on a live music show that airs once weekly. At school James just tries to blend in, hoping no one will know that he's a tv 'star'. At home his family situation is becoming tougher and tougher.

    Don't do drugs, mmmkay?
Content warnings: Racial epithets for native Americans make a brief appearance, character uses a mental illness as an insult, the book implies that marijuana is a gateway drug to methamphetamine, and there are some borderline controlling behaviors being romanticized (male character ignoring a female character telling him to let her go). The portrayal of drug use and addiction is one dimensional.
As a kid, I loved this book. As an adult, I still like it and will be reading the series with my own kids (and having conversations about why stalking and harassing your classmates isn't okay... definitely didn't pick up on how creepy some of the stuff in the books is as a child).
    Loved it!
Would you listen to Sammy Keyes and the Curse of Moustache Mary again? Why?
My daughter and I love listening to Sammy Keyes when riding in the car. This story was one of my favorites.
Have you listened to any of Tara Sandss other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes, She is awesome!!!! I cannot imagine being able to do all of those voices. She really brings the characters to life
    Great Reader Tara Sands
The reading was very animated & you felt like a child was really telling the story. The story was fun & suspenseful, but the subject matter- methamphetamine labs- was much too mature for my 7 & 10 yr olds.

    A true classic.
You might know the jungle book by the Disney version, but have you ever wondered were that story came from? Well Rudy Kipling's tail is were the story begins. The book is not the disney version, I repeat it is NOT the disney version. This book is a collection of stories written by Rudy taking place in india. I very much enjoy this collection and also own the hard copy in addition to the kindle version. As soon as I downloaded this list night I couldn't help but dive in and re read a classic. So if you like short stories, grab your cat, dog, or teddy bear ( what ever is the most snugly ) and curl up for a entertaining read.
Fine Story and Active Table of Contents...
Also has an interesting short biography of the author at the close together with about a dozen photos of the man which was a definite plus. Very good book!
A book of delightful short stories and poem-song
'The Jungle Book' by Rudyard Kipling is a book of delightful short stories and poem-songs about talking animals. Five of the stories follow Mowgli, who as a human toddler was separated from his parents after Shere Khan, the tiger, tried to attack the family in the jungles of India. Instead of ending up as a meal for Shere Khan, Mowgli is raised eventually by two wolves who see him as one of their cubs. But first, a meeting was called and the ethics of adopting a manchild were debated by the pack. The matter is settled when Baloo, the bear, agrees to accept Mowgli as a student to teach him the Law of the Jungle; and Bagheera, the black panther, agrees to take the pack to a newly killed bull in exchange for Mowgli's acceptance into the pack. The wolf pack take the deal, but Shere Khan becomes Mowgli's mortal enemy.
Mowgli has a number of adventures which are not all entirely pleasant, but I have this strong feeling it was on the whole fun to be a feral child!
Other talking animal stories are included which showcase a variety of wild and domesticated animals who find Mankind and Nature directs them towards certain choices and troubles. Their personalities and inclinations direct their fates somewhat, but, gentle reader, I found them all to be wonderful creatures. However, I admit to favoring Rikki Tikki Tavi, the mongoose, most of all!
Mature children will adore this book, especially if they are able to get an edition with illustrations, but if you are familiar with the Disney movie version only, I must emphasize the unabridged book version has animal deaths, by hunting.
Classic tale with some unusual chapters
This is my first time to read this classic story and I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked it. The first few chapters do remind you of the Disney movie and I thought it had a fun appeal for kids and adults alike. However, when we read the chapter "White Seal", I was confused. It seemed odd to jump from the jungle with Mowgli to a story about Kotick, the white seal. Even after reading the entire chapter, I have no idea why this was put into the book....a word of warning if you are reading with your kids (which I was), it does describe the beating of seals and skinning for their coats. Pretty harsh if you are not expecting it.

    Publisher's Summary:
There was a castle. But not just any castle. This was a castle that glittered and sparkled and rose majestically above the banks of the winding Winono River: the Castle Corona.
And in this castle lived a family. But not just any family. This was the family of King Guido - rich and royal and...spoiled. And King Guido was so spoiled that neither jewels nor gold nor splendid finery could please him, for what he longed for most was...a nap and a gown that didn't itch.
Far below this grand, glittering castle lived two peasants. But not just any peasants. These peasants, though poor and pitiful, were plucky and proud, and in possession of a stolen pouch. But not just any pouch. A pouch whose very contents had the power to unlock secrets and transform lives.
And oh, there is an author. But not just any author. Sharon Creech is a Newbery Medal-winning author whose tantalizing tale will not only dazzle and delight but also entertain and excite.
    Members Reviews:
This story makes long car rides a breeze
Sharon Creech's tale managed to keep 3 kids (ages 5, 8, 9) and one adult totally enraptured. The narrator did an amazing job of keeping the large cast of characters distinct, and the story is suspenseful without being scary. There is truly something for everyone - a touch of chaste romance, silly humor, action and suspense. Highly recommended!
Sharon Creech weaves an enchanting story
Sharon Creech has created a truly old-fashioned fairy tale with The Castle Corona. In it we learn of the orphan peasants Pia and Enzio and how their lives become interwoven with those of royalty. An old genre has been brought back to life. You will not be able to stop listening to this book!
    Castle Corona
I felt like this book ended on a cliffhanger which I did not like but overall it was pretty good.
Something a little different to read
If you could sum up The Castle Corona in three words, what would they be?
    Fairy tale theme.
Would you recommend The Castle Corona to your friends? Why or why not?
No. This is really a children's book and written as such.
What about Jennifer Wiltsies performance did you like?
A pleasant voice that speaks well.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No. I started to get bored if I listened to long.
    Any additional comments?
A nice book for kids that like fairy tale style stories. An average read.

Raising Dragons from a kid's point of view
The story was written from the point of view of a pre-teen girl; it could have been a horse farm in today's world. She grows to understand her father better, while she endures humility when a girl rival appears to triumph over her.
This is a well written book that will keep you engaged as you learn about the girl, her father and the orphaned dragon she's grown to love.
My 8 year old loved it.
My 8 year old brought this book home from the library and we started to read it together. It has a very good storyline in the fantasy genre aimed at the younger reader. Can even a handsome prince bring her down to Earth?
One of the most acclaimed literary fairy tales of all time, George MacDonald's profound and witty story floats into bubbling new life in this lovingly crafted full cast reading.
    Editorial Reviews:
George Macdonalds celebrated Scottish fairytale, originally published in 1864, has been capturing childrens imaginations for generations in its depiction of the literally buoyant titular princess discovery of the importance of love and human emotion after being cursed with "lightness" by the cold-hearted and resentful Princess Makemnoit. The Full Cast Audio team does an exquisite job in capturing the rhythm of Macdonalds clever wordplay, and the Princes song, beautifully composed Todd Hobin and performed by Adam Wahlberg, is surely to tug on the listeners heartstrings.

The voice actors contributed to the overall enjoyment of the story.
What did you like best about this story?
This has been my favorite book for years. The characters are fun, the moral is powerful but not heavy-handed. George MacDonald is a treasure that is still largely undiscovered.
Have you listened to any of Cynthia Bishop and the Full Cast Family s other performances before? How does this one compare?
    No
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
The best fairytale you've never heard
    A Hidden Gem
Few people know about George MacDonald. Even fewer have been exposed to the sheer delight of "The Light Princess". This dramatized audio is even more fun than the print version!
If you were reading the text, I would have to warn you that MacDonald writes like, well, like the other writers of his time - with sometimes flowery prose that tends toward detailed descriptions of scenery. But George MacDonald adds multiple layers of meaning to this book which, of all his stories, is the most delightful read.
ALERT: You must be able to appreciate a certain level of "pun-ishment", as this book is full of hilarious plays on words. At least a groan is necessary to acknowledge the multiple meanings of the word "Light" in the title. (What would you do if you had no gravity?)
Ah, but the message, as is also common of 19th century writers, rings through loud and clear, without the wooden unnaturalness that often accompanies moral tales. His is a wonderful wedding of fairy tale fantasy and allegory. Oh, do listen to this book!

A Huge Hit With Third Graders!
Every day one of my third grade students, Junior, comes over to me. "Do you have any more of those Rotten School books, Ms. Elias? They're just so good! I can't stop reading them!" This is a child with learning disabilities, who until now hadn't seemed to experience that reading could be fun - and now he's full of enthusiasm. To be honest, the charm of the books is lost on me, but hey, I'm a grown-up. But anything that gets a reluctant, struggling reader fired up about books is worth buying! It's not just Junior who's a fan, however; several of my stronger readers, and even some of my girls, like them too. So, grit your teeth, and get this series for the favorite third graders in your life.
An Outstanding Start for a Book Series!
I got this book back in 2005 when the series started. Personally, I think this is a very good book if you enjoy mysteries and smart stories. I think this book is a great start for a book series because you keep wanting to read on and on when you start to read it. In fact, I finished this book just in TWO days because I enjoyed it so much. As a fan of this book series for two years, I really recommend other kids to read this wonderful series. It has a lot of very funny and smart scenes.
The series is basically about a fourth grader named Bernie Bridges who got sent to a boarding school called Rotten School. There in the campus, he often gets in trouble. Also, he has a huge crush on a girl called April May June, so he often tries to get her attention and impress her. There are two dorms for the boys-"Nyce House" and "Rotten House". Rotten House is where Bernie and his friends stay at and Nyce House is where Bernie and his friends' enemies stay at. The two sides have a rivalry, so they often compete against each other in events.
That's basically all I can tell you right now because I don't want to spoil anything for you.
Sure to be a hit among pre-teens
This is the first in a new series from beloved children's author R. L. Stine of Goosebumps fame. Bernie Bridges wants Sherman Oaks' fancy new watch. How will he get it? He challenges the residents of Sherman's residential home to a pie eating contest. They will pick a representative for them and Bernie's group will choose a person to represent them. Of course, Bernie has a secret plan. Will it work? You will have to read the book to find out. The Big Blueberry Barf-Off will appeal to most school kids between 8 and 12 years of age.

Miss Minchin: A Large, Cold, Fishy Smile
This is not a Hollywood Shirley Temple syrupy story. No, this is a gaunt, ribs showing, frozen, knee deep mud and ragged clothes book. If you dare, turn your thermometer down to at least 40F as you listen; better, go trudging through the wet snow. Frances Hodgson Burnett knew something about being cold, hungry and poor. This book is straight from her heart. The little princess didn't make the rules, Miss Maria Minchin, Miss Amelia Minchin, the cook, maids and lawyer did. How they behaved toward a helpless child; toward powerless people is on trial here. There are Sara Crewes today, right now in state foster care. We pretend to be horrified at reports of abuse. We do nothing. We are Miss Minchin.
As an aside, have you ever noticed how your significant other behaves toward those in a position of powerlessness...say toward the newly hired teenager who makes a mistake with a burger order? Graciously or as a bully toward the weak? Behold, the real person.
I just finished another Burnett work, "Emily Fox-Sexton, The Making of a Marchioness". It is interesting the way she uses India as a kind of separate character in the book as well as in "The Secret Garden", "A Little Princess" and others. It is a kind of supernatural, mystical place of good and evil; of danger and adventure; one is never quite sure if India is real, imaginary or only a vivid dream.
The narrator, Rebecca Burns did a fine job. Her voice is uniquely her own. She seems perfectly suited to express the pathos of this work. I have a few of her titles, "Pollyanna' comes to minds.
Oh, I almost forgot, this is the story of brave and serene Sara Crewe and the intrepid lascar(sic), Ram Dass. FYI, a lascar was an Indian military specialist who hired out. Hiring a lascar was like hiring a personal Navy SEAL. Nobody messes with a lascar. Nobody.
    Cry me a classic...
I just LOVE this story. It is truly a classic......My recommendation, listen to the sample (narration) before you buy....sobbbb

    A Most Excellent Book!
A most excellent book!! I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a great story! The characters jump off the "pages", and the narration is very clear and enjoyable to listen to.
Elsie's faith is inspiring, and though the trials she goes through are heart-wrenching, she never loses her faith in God. I have thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book, and now my children are listening to it, and enjoing it, as well. I'm sure they will learn a lot from Elsie's story.
A very GOOD girl who thinks she's naughty in 1867
    Any additional comments?
According to Wikipedia, this book was written in 1867 and thus is more true to the picture of that time than a story written in modern times. Amazingly, the dialogue is often reminiscent of that in early movies three quarters of a century later.
Elsie very much takes refuge in a thorough rooting in Christian teachings and turns the other cheek as she is obviously wronged often. Her young, inexperienced father returns after years away and treats her sternly since he has been meanly informed she is a "bad" child by his step-mother. It takes long for him to observe more correctly, yet the strictness continues. This is a long series of books and I find it interesting enough to continue.
Anna Fields is an excellent narrator and performer. She made the characters live.
    Excellent!
My 6 and 11 year olds listen with me. We all, so enjoy these stories. Even my teenage son gets pulled in when we listen in the car.
I believe Elsie to be an excellent example, and the stories are also a great way to increase vocabulary.
