Title: Verbal Riddim: Dub Poetry

Author: Various

Narrator: Gavin Dunn, Seroca Davis

Format: Unabridged Audiobook

Length: 3 hours 25 minutes

Release date: June 1, 2023

Genres: Poetry

Publisher's Summary:

Brought to you by Penguin. This is dub poetry: bold and musical, funny and furious. This collection brings together the work of nine inventive and brilliant poets who defined and drove the dub poetry genre. From the Caribbean, Canada and the UK, the poetry in this collection spans forty years, as dub became a powerful cultural and creative force. With roots in the reggae culture of 1970s Kingston, dub poetry uses the vivid expressions of everyday spoken language to describe and challenge the experience of life on the margins. Early dub poetry took on police violence, slums and poverty. Later, as Caribbean migrants arrived in countries like Britain and Canada, dub poets faced new issues: racism, discrimination and hostility. Over four difficult decades, dub gave marginalised people a voice for their anger, defiance and creativity. It was the soundtrack to post-Windrush culture. Serious and humorous, alive and urgent, here is the very best of dub poetry. The poets included in this collection are: Oku Onuora, Mikey Smith, Mutabaruka, Jean 'Binta' Breeze, James Berry, Benjamin Zephaniah, Ahdri Zhina Mandiela, Lillian Allen and Afua Cooper. ©2023 Various (P)2023 Penguin Audio

Length: 7 hours 29 minutes

Release date: May 31, 2023

Publisher's Summary:

Title: [Spanish] - A rachas: Poesía reunida

Author: Carmen Martín Gaite

Narrator: Carmen Martín Gaite

Format: Unabridged Audiobook

Length: 0 hours 44 minutes

Release date: May 31, 2023

Genres: Poetry

Publisher's Summary:

Title: Bread and Circus

Author: Airea D. Matthews

Narrator: Airea D. Matthews

Format: Unabridged Audiobook

Length: 1 hour 47 minutes

Release date: May 30, 2023

Genres: Poetry

Publisher's Summary:

Winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize “Discerning and significant.” —Poetry Foundation “A sharp memoir in verse.” —LitHub This powerful and timely collection of autobiographical poems from Yale Young Poets Award Winner and Philadelphia’s former Poet Laureate Airea D. Matthews about the economics of class is a brilliant intellectual and artistic contribution to the ongoing conversation about American inequality. As a former student of economics, Airea D. Matthews was fascinated and disturbed by 18th-century Scottish economist Adam Smith’s magnum opus The Wealth of Nations. Now, she presents a direct challenge to Smith’s theory of the invisible hand, which claims self-interest is the key to optimal economic outcomes. By juxtaposing redacted texts by Smith and the French Marxist Guy Debord with autobiographical prose and poems, Bread and Circus personally offers how self-interest fails when it reduces people to commodity and spectacle. A layered collection to be read and reread, with poems that range from tragic to humorous, in forms as varied and nuanced as the ideas the book considers, Bread and Circus asks what it is to have survived, indeed to have flourished, and at what cost. “Full of humane wisdom, this powerful volume forces readers to acknowledge systemic inequity” (Publishers Weekly, starred review) and is ideal for fans of Elizabeth Alexander, Natalie Diaz, Eve Ewing, and Gregory Pardlo.

Title: Museum of My Soul

Author: Dornel Phillips

Narrator: Dornel Phillips

Format: Unabridged Audiobook

Length: 0 hours 52 minutes

Release date: May 22, 2023

Genres: Poetry

Publisher's Summary:

Museums have different exhibits displaying different eras, regions, etc., and so does this book. My goal is to highlight three sections in romantic relationships, as per how I see them. Every good story has a rise, climax, and fall, this is shown through the book's three sections. Many believe relationships to be a mirror, as do I. Our partners act as a reflection of how we show up in the world. They show us the things we need to work on. Whether and how long those relationships last, is a topic for another conversation. The three exhibits (sections) the book is divided into are as follows: Exhibit A: Falling (The infatuation stages of early love) Exhibit B: Being broken (Relationships acting as our mirrors, showing us our faults) Exhibit C: Ending (When the relationship can no longer work and it comes to its conclusion) I hope you enjoy your tour through the Museum of My Soul, enjoy your stay, and hopefully, you'll come again.
