"In this sensitive portrayal (expanded from the author's first published story, 'Lady in the Tower') McCaffrey draws a warm and vivid picture of a struggling frontier society." (

Interesting Story - Performance is lacking
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I so wanted to enjoy this book but the "reader" is not a voice actor to the point that it is annoying for me being used to real talent in this area from other audible books. The performance is amateurish with often little or no emotion or believable speech patterns and other times exaggerated.
Who was your favorite character and why?
    Rowan
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Jean Reed Bahle?
    Lisa Gardner
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
    not many
    excellent
If you could sum up The Rowan in three words, what would they be?
    wonderfully engaging story!
What did you like best about this story?
The can't stop listening factor of the story that catches you and keeps you comming back for more.
Which character as performed by Jean Reed Bahle was your favorite?
    The Rowan
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Yes I laughed and cried. The deaths were so sad.
    Any additional comments?
This is a wonderful book. I used to own it as an audio cassette version and it sounds just like I remember. It has always been one of my favorite books ever since highschool when I first read it in paperback. I just had to have this book, but then the whole series is great.
    Rowan Rocks
What did you love best about The Rowan?
The development of this series is just awesome. Mixing space, telekinesis and teleporation with aliens and humans is a great combo!
Who was your favorite character and why?
    Rowan and Purza
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    YES
    Not a bad start
This is sort of a continuation of the Pegasis series and does continue the story. The only downfall is the length of the book which if this was a movie would have been over in about 30 minutes, still it is a good listen. However, the reader does not seem to be that good since she cannot seem to pronounce some of the names of the places correctly even according to some of the dictionaries online or in print. If you can get over the fact that the name of the planet that Jeff comes from is spelled Deneb and not Deneeb as the reader pronounces it, she is a good reader.
    An Oldie...
One of books I read when younger and has been remembered.

    great
i have read this series over and over, the audio version is great. i like getting a break from the bad guys winning.
    We finally meet the Farmers
This second book in the series has the colony continuing to prosper and they also finally meet the farmers. On an odd note Zynel seems to be the only one of his kind that is actively given a chance to show a different side of the Catteni. Aside from that the book is fairly even handed and well written.
    Engaging, interesting, and enjoyable.
I love the book. I love the storyline. I love the engaging characters and the concepts presented. This is an excellent series I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good story
    FANTASTIC!!!!!
I love this series and the performance by the voice actors was great. It's a nice change from one voice actor trying to be all the characters. The casting was very well done. I really look forward to the next book. When I read the series again, I'll be hearing these choices as I read.
    Great.
I love this writer's sense of storyline and adventure. Performance lacks. Monotone lacking expression. Would love to read a paper copy.

    Two Lives Entwined
This is a story about love and discovery, two lives are followed till they reach a "Meeting of Minds".
There are battles and romance, conflict and growth.
Sixteen year old Afra Lyon travels to meet the Rowan who is a Tower Prime and unable to travel off the station around Jupiter's Orbit.
He becomes her confidant and friend, but to his boss Prime Ridinger disappointment he never became her lover.
He watches his friend fall in love and helps break her of her psychosis and becomes a part of her family helping to raise her children.
Afra waits and searches for the lover that will be his life mate, to reach a Meeting of Minds with her.
How long will he have to wait till the woman he finds to SEE Afra the man?
Damia Gwen-Raven, was a early bloomer to her talents. Frustrating her mother, terrorizing the Tower staff into panic, never doing anything exactly "wrong" but she was too much for the little station when her telekinetic abilities surfaced when she was two years old.
Being "shipped" to a planet and raised by her Grandmother, Damia grows up with her brothers and sister eventually becoming a Tower Prime.
Her loneliness was something she expected, for her mother had Afra when she was alone to help her till Jeff Raven showed up, she had no one. She sought a Mind that was stronger then hers, but never found it.
Infatuated with a mind she finds out in space, stronger then her own, devastated about the results that ultimately came from that contact. Damia finds the Man that is her equal.
Both Damia and Afra Dream and find that they have the strength to lead Third Generation of Gwen Raven Children.
    Entertaining
Not great literature, but fun and entertaining. Been through the whole series a few times.
    Getting Better All the Time
Would you consider the audio edition of Damia to be better than the print version?
I thoroughly enjoyed the print version but hearing it has reminded me why I love this series of books and characters.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Damia?
When her and Afra finally get together.
Have you listened to any of Jean Reed Bahles other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes, I like this one much better than the first one. Maybe I am just getting used to her voicing style.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I laughed out loud, a lot!
    I love this series
I have read the books many times over the years and the audible reading was a pleasure to listen to. I could almost recite many passages along with the reader.
    Growing up with psychic talent.
Even the most loving home can feel lonely if you are excluded. Damia feels excluded from her siblings and she turns to the cats and Afra as her friends. She is precocious and bright, she is also sneaky and adventurous. Another facet of what psychic ability could bring to a family and the humanity. The performance was good, not fantastic, but more of a reading than a performance.

    Finally!
I've been wanting to find this book unabridged for years! Chris Barrie is an awesome narrator, and I wish he read more books. The way he can do the voices of all the RD characters is nothing short of amazing! Thank you, Audible, for making this book available. Let's hope that Better than Life is coming soon!
In Space No One Can Hear You Smeg!!!
A classic Audio Production that needs more like it in the series to be offered on Audible.
Chris Barrie does a spectacular reading and does the impressions of his cast members don to a T.
We would welcome more of this to Audible
    Simply OUTSTANDING.....
Red Dwarf: Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers
Narration by Chris Barre Himself who Played Rimmer in the Original BBC TV Show, does an unbelievable job, and despite only him Narrating he does the voices of Holley, Lister, Cat and of Course Rimmer beautifully.
"Red Dwarf" serves as a companion novel to the British science-fiction television series produced by Grant Naylor Productions, by Doug Naylor and Rob Grant.
The plot of the book loosely adapts episodes from the first 2 Seasons of the BBC Show, and uses the novel format to explore the characters backstory more than they ever could in the half-hour episodes while expanding existing scenes far beyond the means available to them on the television series' budget and runtime.
Red Dwarf Started in 1989 and just finished production on Series XII Releasing in 2017
Fans of the show will enjoy this, though they should read it after watching the series as it contains spoilers, and reenacted scenes from the Show with more details, and it will appeal to those who enjoy similar works such as
"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy"
    And "Dr. Who"
    Highly, Highly Recommended..
    A great Sci-Fi parody classic.
If you liked "Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy", "Airplane" the movie, Naked Gun or anything like them you'll probably like this too. If you hate them you'll probably hate this. I loved this series, I loved this book when I got it as a kid as one of my first science fiction books from the sci-fi book club in the mail. When I first read it I didn't realize it was parody until I was well into it. This was probably my first exposure to parody sci-fi/fantasy stories and warped me. With Chris Barie's, one of the actors from the TV show based on this book reading it is a real delight since he is very talented at doing different voices for the characters.

Julian is one of these dedicated soldiers, until he inadvertently kills a young boy. Now he struggles to understand how this has changed his mind.
Forever Peace is a riveting portrayal of the effects of collective consciousness, and it offers some tantalizing revelations. Narrator George Wilson's skillful performance weaves together the elements of futuristic technology with the drama of a trained soldier reconciling basic human needs.
    Critic Reviews:
"At once a hard science, military, and political thriller, this book presents a thoughtful and hopeful solution to ending war in the 21st century. Essential for sf collections." (Library Journal)
    Members Reviews:
Good, but not as good as The Forever War
In terms of sheer writing skill, and the ability to portray the raw tragedy, loneliness, and emptiness of being a soldier, Joe Haldeman is without equal. This book is melancholy, depressing, and despairing. It is not, however, as good as The Forever War, and in fact has no relation to that epochal work.
'Walk a mile in their shoes' Syndrome
This book is a spiritual, if not narrative, sequel to Haldemans 1975 Forever War. Both novels won the Hugo & Nebula, and explore the theme of wars futility, although from different perspectives and in separate story-worlds. Readers expecting a continuation of Forever Wars interstellar conflict or relativistic time dilation effects, will see that instead this story features a strictly terrestrial struggle between the wealthy nations, fueled by effortless nano-factory produced plenty, and the struggling excluded masses. The earlier novel, written in the immediate post-Vietnam days of an antagonistic welcome for returning veterans, further exaggerated the alienation of the protagonist with a fish-out-of-water situation that placed the character hopelessly out of touch with his own century. Here, in the 1998 novel, one senseless war is supplanted by an invisible one to end all wars, as the protagonist discovers a pacification treatment that involves sharing one of the militarys tightest-held tools with all of humanity to bring individuals together into a community incapable of violence outside of self-defense. Haldeman uses SF technology as vehicle to explore the age-old thought that if we only walked in our enemies shoes for a day. At the same time, the greatest opponent to this peace movement is one of religious zealots who inexplicably seem to want death and destruction for its own sake. I felt that not enough insight was given to their internal motivation, even when the narrative was told in first person perspective of one these characters. This left them a bit too archetypical and cartoon-evil for me. On the human-scale drama of this story, there is a compelling relationship that is shown conquering the challenges of race, age, military-civilian differences, then jacked vs natural minds until it is thoroughly proven to be unshakable. There are also some notable thriller scenes and a number of high-tech asymmetric warfare scenes as well.

The "sun" is now a featureless disk - a heat source, rather than an astronomical object. The moon is gone, but tides remain. The world's artificial satellites have fallen out of orbit. Eventually, space probes reveal that the barrier is artificial, generated by huge alien artifacts. Time passes faster outside the barrier - more than a hundred million years per day on Earth. At this rate, the death of the sun is only about forty years away.
Jason, now a promising young scientist, devotes his life to working against this slow-moving apocalypse. Diane throws herself into hedonism, marrying a sinister cult leader who's forged a religion out of the fears of the masses.
Earth sends terraforming machines, then humans, to Mars...and immediately an emissary returns with thousands of stories about the settling of Mars. Then an identical barrier appears around Mars.
Life on Earth is about to get much, much stranger.

    Members Reviews:
    Great Listen!
Having read some of Robert Charles Wilson in the past, I wasn't exactly sure what to expect with Spin. I had certainly heard good things, but Wilson has the tendency to start with a great idea and not do much else with it (see Darwinia).
I am happy to report that Spin delivers on all fronts. Not only is the spin a fantastic sci-fi concept, the subsequent focus on how humanity deals with it engrossing. Wilson drifts between scientific and social ideas with such grace, that the world he creates in Spin seems completely plausible.
Another beef I have with Wilson is that he doesn't always end his stories with a lot of closure (or even elementary explanation sometimes). I was working through Spin with a dreadful feeling that all of this tremendous tension and buildup was going to be a letdown. Again, I had nothing to worry about. The ending is left open for the sequel (Axis, coming out this year or next), but the Spin itself is fully explained.
All of the pieces of this book fit very nicely together and I can't recommend it highly enough. This was well deserving of the Hugo, and I look forward to more Robert Charles Wilson in the future!
    A good listen
A lot of other reviewers seem to have complained about not finding out what's going on until the end.
This confuses me - why would you bother reading the book if the ending was laid out for you neatly in the first two chapters?
The book is part SF, part mystery. It's written from the perspective of a character who isn't a scientist, but a doctor, so the SF stuff is dumbed down a bit, but not offensively so.
I enjoyed this audiobook very much, and I would have enjoyed seeing a direct sequel, rather than a spin-off novel with the same premise and a different lead character.
    thoughtful, Bradbury-esque SF
The premise of this book is straight out of the Twilight Zone: someone or something has encased the Earth in a mysterious, black field that causes time on the planet to slow down. For every day of Earth time, centuries pass in the rest of the universe. Stars and the moon disappear, and the sun is replaced by an artificial simulation.

Based directly on Frank Herbert's final outline, which lay hidden in two safe-deposit boxes for a decade, Sandworms of Dune will answer the urgent questions Dune fans have been debating for two decades: the origin of the Honored Matres, the tantalizing future of the planet Arrakis, the final revelation of the Kwisatz Haderach, and the resolution to the war between Man and Machine. This breathtaking new audiobook in Frank Herbert's Dune series has enough surprises and plot twists to please even the most demanding listener.
    Members Reviews:
    You'll buy it anyway
I have never been enthralled with the authors' 'new' Dune books (although I respect their other works), but I have bought them all to hear how the story ends (and began). I would rate this book better than some of the others in the authors' series, although none of them approach the original works (in my opinion). I actually do not mind the content of this book so much as the style of writing, which is so different from Frank Herbert's (though some may prefer it as more 'readable'). I assume the majority of the plot points were outlined by F. Herbert, but I felt the execution was clumsy and drawn out. The ending resolution felt derivative of several sci-fi movies to me, you'll know which when you read it. Mostly though, I find that I cannot listen to Scott Brick's narration - this is entirely personal preference, but I find his narrations overly dramatic and entirely too earnest.
    Complete failure
A terrible ending to a great collection. Frank Herbert's books are about ideas and concepts. Brian and Kevin seem to lack any original thought, and do not have an ounce of thought provoking or controversial material. Their books are about action and adventure. Frank's books are about the integration of religion, government and warfare, and their implications on society. Brian and Kevin's books are about Duncan Idaho saving humanity and big worms crushing robots. Bland.
A sad end to an otherwise excellent series.
This climax has been in the making for decades. I came to the party late but have really enjoyed the Dune series. The Brian/Kevin novels have been criticized by fans because of some emotional objections to the story being continued by anyone besides Frank Herbert but lets face it, the story is worth continuing. Besides, I've read many of Kevin J Anderson's other works and his writing is superb (until now) so I knew that these objections were nonsensical.
What I like: Their continuation of the story is seamless. The dialog and behavior of the characters is spot on. The audiobook's narration is good and immersive despite the lack of consistency in character voices from book to book. The story is very engaging which makes it difficult to stop reading until the book is finished.
What I didn't like: The final resolution of the story was abrupt and illogical. Here are a few points that make me say that...
    1. Sandworms can survive the moist atmosphere of Synchrony because they have the intelligence of Laito II to guide them, yet the original Laito II was killed by water.
    2. The identity of the face dancers was obvious yet these humans with evolved intelligences could not identify them. In fact, it was so obvious that these scenes were almost painful to endure.
    3.

Engaging and fun. A good light listen
Where does Halo rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
I've only listened to Halo books so far, so #1! I've listened to radio plays and the like before, and this ranks up there. I've been warned to stay with the unabridged versions like this, though.
What other book might you compare Halo to and why?
Starship Troopers and The Mote in God's Eye were both good as well. There are a number of decent parallels that were drawn from those two for the Halo stories. They're older works, but still good--I preferred Starship Troopers. Just don't confuse it with the movie.
Which character as performed by Jonathan Davis was your favorite?
I enjoyed them all, except for Dr. Halsey. The way he performed her character just seemed too cold... very calculating and unlikable.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
Sometimes for a Spartan MIA really means MIA....
    Any additional comments?
Thank goodness they finally got someone that knows how to pronounce "Mjolnir." If I had to hear another audio book where the reader pronunced "Mjolnir" as "Muh-jol-neer" I don't know what I would have done. And what's with previous readers saying "USNC" instead of "UNSC" and "Fujikawa-Shaw" instead of "Shaw-Fujikawa?" Nit picky, I know, but....
    Not Bad
The beginning of the book is tough as the plot jumps around and sometimes becomes hard to follow. I nearly gave up on it, but I'm glad I didn't because the end brings everything together and overall it was quite good.
This book is not about Master Chief, but about other Spartans and continues the story started in First Strike. Don't expect this book to have to much to do with Halo 3 when it comes out.
    Good
Awesome story and ties remakes sly with the halo games closes a lot of open thoughts regarding the Spartans and many of their abilities. Wonder what's going to happen next, can't wait to listen to the next book and maybe finish the series in time for halo5 and its upcoming stories and Gina adventures.
    Amazing
This a great book with an amazing story, good themes, and fun action. The guy who reads it does a great job as well.
    Wow, what a great story
I cant say it enough, what a great story. I am glad I got this book. You cant help but feel for the Key Spartans on this story, especially at the end.

Nine-year-old Conner Callahan will face the ultimate terror as he struggles to understand who he has been bred to be and what he must do to save humanity.
Meet Colonel Michael Wilkes, a government official who has monitored the Grays' presence for years. He's done everything in his power to keep the secret of the Grays from reaching the public, but when the Grays begin to reveal themselves, Wilkes' fear of ultimate occupation forces him to set in motion a sinister plan to ensure the survival of humanity. But at what cost?
The fate of the human race lies in one woman, Lauren Glass. Her father was the only man to communicate with the Grays. His untimely death leaves Lauren the unique ability to communicate with the last remaining captive Gray, known as A for Adam, and she may be the only one to truly unravel the Grays' ultimate plan.

"A terrific read." (Booklist) "It goes without saying that [Strieber's] abduction scenarios have a disturbing authenticity that even skeptical readers will find provocative." (Publishers Weekly)

    EXCELLENT listen
I got this book because I have listened to MOST of the Sci-fi books here since I have been a member for a long time.. Basically, I thought I was out of "good" Sci-fi to listen to for a while, but stumbled across the reviews on this one and decided to give it a try.
At first It seemed VERY slow, and I thought "Here's one I won't finish", but a friend said, "Make it through the first hour, it gets a LOT better!"
It got a LOT better!!! So much better that I spent 8 straight hours (all night, until 7 this morning) listening to the rest of it.
It's like the X-files meets every UFO Conspiracy theory ever produced, but the author pulls it off so well that you can give a nod to a "Conspiracy theory" as it passes by, without it damaging the story, in fact it adds more to it.
The Science and philosophy is More than excellent in some areas, but a bit weak in a few spots (Not enough to damage the story though).
I'm sure there will be a second book, now I just have to wait for it (I HATE that part ;).
    Riveting, Don't Miss!!
This is the first time I have ever given any Audible book a five star rating. Strieber has written an extraordinarily well crafted story with a 5 star chill factor. Whether you believe in UFOs or not, you will find this stunning story keeps your interest to the point that driving a car while listening to some scenes can be a dangerous to life and limb. Strieber is going to produce a motion picture based on this book. If he can get his writing on the screen as it comes across in the novel, it will be a mammoth hit. If you like action, suspense, terror (in places), excellent characterizations, and well choregraphed chaos, don't miss this one.
    A good SF yarn
At first it started like a humdrum abduction story that had me rolling my eyes. Fortunately, it quickly moved into a complicated story that pulled me in. Good characters, twisty plot, historical ties, and no clear villain, all that I like.

    Lots of fun!
If you have ever read anything by David Weber then you already know the characters, plot and conclusion. I don't mean that as a criticism, because I loved these stories. But if you are looking for high literature, insightful social commentary or a 'visionary' new story... this is not what you're looking for. If you want adventure and escapism dressed in military sci-fi clothing, by all means buy the entire series- In fact, buy everything the man has ever written because that's exactly what he writes. It's brain candy, and there is nothing wrong in indulging in mindless fun now and again.
Weber Ringo team a pure winner!!
This David Weber and John Ringo collaboration really sets the bar for modern military SF. Kind of a "Hemingway -esk" main theme with an immature fop learning manhood from an older and wiser man. Great battle scenes and interestingly believable situations. This series got me rolling on John Ringo books like the Posleen War series, note to Audible, we need these in audiobook form... and led to my blazing through most of David Webers work. Honestly, this one is well worth your time. Can we give 10 stars? Well done David and John, thanks for the ride!!
Weber, Ringo, and Rudnicki -- a great combination
This is the first in the Prince Roger series, and it gets off to a great start. Typical Weber and Ringo, with lots of action and adventure, but there's more underneath here than we sometimes see. The story has Prince Roger on his way to do his "wave the flag" duty at a distant world when his ship, and the dedicated Company of soldiers assigned to protect his (in their and just about everyone else's opinion) worthless butt is forced to land on a minor and rather inhospitable world due to sabatoge. They fight the flora, fauna and natives, to march "up-country" to try to get to the one port on the planet so that Roger can return home. The interaction between Roger and his Company, especially the Company Commander, is a learning experience for everyone.
The story is well read by Stefan Rudnicki, whose narration is seamless and becomes a part of the story, never standing out or distracting.
Overall, a pleasure, and a read that makes me really want to do a couple of extra laps just to listen to it.
Hard Military SF with a definite worldview
This audiobook, a re-telling of an ancient Greek account called the Anabasis with the addition of space marines and aliens, is firmly in the hard military science fiction tradition -- you will learn to tell a lance corporal from a captain and get detailed descriptions of how each weapon and device works.
