Spells are Not How to Capture a Girl's Heart
This is the fourth book that I have read in the "My Boyfriend is a Monster" series from Graphic Universe. This one is written by Marie P Croall and illustrated by Hyeondo Park. Croall may be best known for her four books in the Graphic Myths and Legends series while Park has done numerous books with Monkey Brains Comics.
In "Under His Spell" the "monster" in question is a fae prince whose other world problems interfere with Bethany Farmer's focus on school and sports. Unlike her best friend who seems to fall in and out of love, Bethany never loses her focus, she just adjusts as you have to do during your teen year to thrive and get a firm foundation for your future. Bethany, as is the case with all of the "My Boyfriend is a Monster" series heroines, is realistic yet a very strong young woman. Not easy sexist stereotypes for this series but also no perfect tropes, just honest discussion of teen girls lives across different economic, family style, and academic skill categories.
Croall and Park (or their editor) have worked very well together, the text and story are helped by the illustrations and make for a fuller story that I enjoyed reading and would definitely pass on to any teenage girls (or boys) that I knew. Both would have good role models in this series.

Bethany is your normal, average teenage girl and unlike what the back cover says...she isn't boring. She plays soccer, studies hard, and enjoys hanging out with her friends. And everything is normal...until a fae prince in hiding appears. And troubles arises. Bethany and her friends must quickly figure out how to survive and "like" might be on the horizon.
This is the 4th book in the "My Boyfriend is a Monster" series and the books in this series seem to be a bit hit or miss in the story/artwork. The first one for example was great, the third one--"Love Bites"...not so much. This one is kinda in between. Admittedly I'm not the target audience, but I'll give any graphic novel a read at least once. The writing in this volume is....decent. I still have problems with the transitions between events (its a problem that's plagued all of the series.) There just often aren't any. One page you're on the soccer field and the next one you're at her house. Just nothing in between, no real sense of time frame, etc.
