Great Twist on the Zombie Genre
Highly entertaining young adult novel, sophisticated enough for more mature readers. It's a sort of "Walking Dead" meets "Hunger Games" with a little bit of "I Am Legend" thrown in. A virus is accidentally (or maybe not) released into the midwest and spreads, creating hordes of 'cannibals' , who feast on the living. After heroine Lily Mackenzie's family is attacked and killed, she seeks revenge and discovers she is able to literally sniff out the cannibals, a unique gift that makes her the titular 'cannibal hunter'. The first half of the book shifts between Lily's present day hunt, and flashbacks showing her happier past. In the second half, and my favorite part, the story picks up speed as Lily and her partner, Joe, start to discover more about the virus and the disturbing truth of its origins. While I was unable to literally flip pages on my Kindle app, I was certainly racing along to get to the resolution, and I very much hope there is a second book in the series, because I still have a lot of questions!
A credible and contemporary thriller
âThe Cannibal Hunter,â by Genie Davis and Linda Marr, is a standout young adult novel that crosses over into adult fiction. In many ways, it reminded me of âThe Hunger Gamesâ or âThe Fault in Our Stars.â
It's a fast paced book with apocalyptic elements. What it does best is to create a believable teen heroine and then to put her through a terrifying series of challenges. Writers Genie Davis and Linda Marr have both, between them and separately, written a number of different books I've enjoyed. This is the first Young Adult book I've read written by them, and it is an effective fit. The scenario of a cannibal virus is credible and contemporary.
This thriller is a solid read; it quickly pulled me into the story and held me fast. The plot moves from a small town in Nebraska to Key West. Along the journey, it successfully and stunningly shapes the look of the country after a shocking, possibly terrorist-driven event.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book and am convinced teens will enjoy it, too. âThe Cannibal Hunterâ could easily serve as a stepping-stone to a solid series.
Fun read for zombie fans
Fans of The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead, this has the same feel. While itâs not a graphic novel, the story line is definitely an apocalyptic kind of thing. Itâs not zombies though, itâs cannibals this time, and the hero is a regular teenage girl who is forced to become a smart, tough warrior -- in that way it's a little bit like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, too. In fact, I could see it being a TV series.
